The Relationship between Student Absenteeism and their Academic Performance among

Senior High Students in Carlos P. Garcia High School

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

I.1 Introduction

Many people see absenteeism as an undying problem that hinder student’s education and

it can exist in any levels of education. This problem can occur in elementary, high school, and

college or in any people that is studying. Absenteeism is a practice of regularly staying away

from work or school without a good reason (Oxford). However there are many factors that affect

student’s absenteeism and it is important to know these factors to understand the behavior of

students on why they commit absenteeism and to help not only the students but also the teachers

to minimize or lessen the burden of absenteeism.

A lot of schools, specially public schools, faces the same problem about students who

don’t go to school for no particular reason. As a student, I have seen my classmates who

constantly absent as an issue especially when it comes to group task. Lots of students fail to

comply the given task to them because they are absent, which leads to retaining in their grade

level. The problem is that the concept of absenteeism to students has become their nature as time

goes by and making it their habit. The factors that can contribute to the student absenteeism are

academic performance, academic self-perception, teacher and student relationship, doing

household chores, family income and parents educational level. The student’s attendance is

important because students are more likely to succeed in their academics when the student

attended school frequently. It would be hard for the teachers and the class to build their

1
skills and progress if most of the students are frequently absent. More than falling behind in

academics, students who do not attend their classes in school on a regular basis are more

likely to get into trouble with the law and cause problems in their communities.

Many authors concluded that, in education or in academia, class attendance plays a

significant role on how the students would perform and succeeds in studying in their class and

their overall studies (Park & Kerr, 1990; Romer, 1993; Devadoss & Foltz, 1996).

According to Pehlivan (2006) he found that the major reason given by students for non-

attendance at lecture or school were bored at school, dislike of school and lessons,

encouragement of friends, and lack of expectations about education. According to our point of

view the teacher's strategy or techniques in teaching did not catch the attention of the students or

not interested in subjects or lessons.

A study conducted by the Rodel Community Scholars in 2008 at Arizona State

University that tracked students from kindergarten through high school found that dropout

patterns were linked with poor attendance, beginning in kindergarten. Gregory Hickman,

director of the Rodel Community Scholars program and former director of the Arizona

Dropout Initiative, notes they discovered that as early as kindergarten, behavioral

differences are apparent between those who go on to graduate and those who drop out, with

dropouts missing an average of 124 days by eighth grade.

Related in this study, researchers noticed the growing rate of absenteeism in Carlos

P. Garcia High School, particularly the students in Senior High that drawn the attention of

the teachers that affects the student academic performance and recorded as low because of

the frequent absences. Because of this circumstances, the teachers usually called on the

2
student’s parents to make them come to school and discuss about their child’s situation. As

a result to that, the aim of this study is to examine the personal causes that give rise to

absenteeism, to know the effects of absenteeism, to determine the factors of absenteeism among

senior high students here in Carlos P. Garcia High School for school year 2019-2020.

In this study, the developed research-made questionnaire will help the researchers to

address the research problem and research objectives. The following study would mainly use the

descriptive research design with the help of survey questionnaire to gather the needed data.

According to Creswell (2002) "the use of descriptive research design is appropriate when the

purpose is to describe persons, organizations, setting or phenomena".

3
I.2 Conceptual Framework

In this research, a conceptual framework of this study consists of varied

conceptualization regarding to the topic absenteeism, impact of financial problem to

absenteeism, prior absenteeism, consequences of absenteeism, and ways to manage absenteeism.

The study requires a conceptual framework to present the factors influencing the student

absenteeism and to presume the relationship of student absenteeism and their academic

performance, based on their behaviors and the factors that affect the student’s attendance.

Figure 1. Research Paradigm

The figure presented will show how the research is created, the factors which resulted to

absenteeism, in terms of personal factors, family factors, environmental factors, using the

gathered data. Along with the student’s opportunity to learn, expected outcomes of their studies,

the quality of learnings, student’s attitude towards absenteeism, and their participation in class

will show the efforts the students put in their studies. Through that, the results will show the

student’s academic performance. The current study will attempt to find if the following factors

4
would affect the student absenteeism, and to know the relationship between the student

absenteeism and their academic

performance.

I.3 Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine The Relationship between Student Absenteeism and their

Academic Performance among Senior High Students in Carlos P. Garcia High School for school

year 2019-2020. Specifically, it pursued to answer the following questions:

1. What is the Demographic Profile according to:

 Specialization

 Gender

 Age

2. Level Absenteeism.

3. What are the factors that causes absenteeism in student?

4. What is the level of academic performance of the Senior High Student.

5. Is there a relationship between the students level of absenteeism to the academic

performance?

5
I.4 Significance of the Study

The results of this study will benefit the following individuals in their own respective

fields:

 Students. This research will help the students to find out the positive results of being in

the classroom. As Absenteeism can spoil their future too. They will learn to be

disciplined and other moral values to be present in the classroom. They will understand

the concepts related to their curricular being regular in class. The encouragement,

rewards and gaining attention after understanding the consequences, improve their self-

esteem too.

 Parents. The parents will know the special needs of their children. As parents enrolled

their children in this institution, comes with self-assurance that their children are given

more education that would make them a functional individual in the society and the

parents are the direct and the baseline in communication in relation to their child’s

regular truancy. Knowing the impact of absenteeism to their child’s learning

performance, a parent will be at the concerns of convincing their child to attend school

and protect them from the primary causes of their absences.

 Teachers. The teachers will understand the main problem, cause for it and suggestion

provided will help her/him to bring drastic change in her/him classroom and provide

her/him hold in the class to teach qualitatively with maximum effectiveness and would be

able to identify different motivational techniques/strategies on how they can influence

students to lessen or eliminate act of absenteeism.

6
 Principal. This study will be used as basis to prevent absenteeism and on how to enhance

the learning process for this generation of learners.

 Researchers. The results of this study is beneficial to the neither present researchers or

the future researchers. This study may be one of the basis that a new study in learning

will arise.

I.5 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research will be conducted at Carlos P. Garcia High School, School Year 2019-

2020. The researchers picked 30 random students from 6 different section in grade 11 and grade

12. Each section from Senior High Level, 5 students would be chosen to answer the

questionnaire.

The research is designed to have a thorough knowledge about the relationship of

student’s absenteeism and their academic performance.

I.6 Definition of Terms

The following are the technical terms used in this study:

Absenteeism. The regular truancy of a child; The habit of having absences.

Academia. The environment or community concerned with the pursuit of research, and

education.

Academic. Relating to performance in courses of study (Academic excellence and

academic achievements)
7
Attendance. A record of how often a person goes to classes.

Average. A ratio expressing the average performance especially of a student computed

according to the number of opportunities for successful performance.

Behavior. A student behavior and discipline. Schools support the learning, wellbeing and

safety of all students. Collaboration between staff, students, and parents is fundamental to

maintaining positive student behavior and effective discipline in schools.

Drastic. Extreme in effect or action: severe or serious.

Education. A field of study that deals with the methods and problems of teaching.

Family problem. The problems of the family that greatly affects a student’s attendance

to school.

Financial. The family can’t afford education or education not a primary necessity

Performance. Academic performance is the extent to student, teacher or institution has

achieved their short or long-term educational goals.

Student. A person who is studying at a school.

Teacher. A person who teaches, especially in a school.\

Transportation. The family might live in a very rural community where in

transportation cannot easily reach.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the ideas, opinions, perceptions of the researchers that supports to

the present study.

II.1 Family Factors

Several authors gave their views about cause of absenteeism of the students. (Morgan et

al, 2009), Stresses that children from low socio-economic status households and communities

develop academic skills more slowly compared to their counterparts from higher socio-economic

status families. Children from high socio-economic status can develop academic skills faster than

those children whose socio-economic status are low, that results to absence of the students at

school. (Kunje, 2009) investigated in his findings that families in Malawi that are socially

categorized as wealthy registered a good indication on the good performance of the students than

those that are considered poor families as they can provide more on the needs of their students.

Families in Malawi that are categorized as wealthy indicates a good performance of the students,

because of their status families that are categorized wealthy can provide the needs of their

students than those who are considered poor families.

(Henry, 2007) noted that students whose mother or father has college degree, had a lower

chance of being absent from school. According to our point of view behavior of the students in

schools will depend on the school attainment of their parents. (Corville-Smith, Ryan Adams, &

Dalicandro, 1998; Rood, 1989; Corley, 2012; Gentle Genitty, 2008, Eastman et al., 2007, 2007;

Reed, 2000). The lack of consistency; divorce; inter-parent conflicts; family structure, such as a

9
single parent; interest or control level for the student's behavior; parents have low education

level; negative past school experiences; lack of participation in school or not understanding

procedures; and not providing environment for the student to do homework .

II.2 School Factors

(Clarke, 2008; Corville-Smith, Ryan Adams, and Dalicandro, 1998; Williams, 2001)

Absenteeism of students usually do not feel safe at the school. They feel academically or socially

inadequate. They find classes boring and their positive experiences related to school are less than

those who attend school regularly. Students who absent often feel that they don’t have enough

experience related to school than those students who attends class regularly. (Pehlivan, 2006)

found that the major reason given by students for non-attendance at lecture or school were bored

at school, dislike of school and lessons, encouragement of friends, and lack of expectations

about education. Pehlivan (2006), states the causes of absenteeism is that the students were bored

at school, dislike of school and lessons, encouragement of friends, and lack of expectations about

education, they feel bored at school because of the strategy of the teacher to catch the attention of

the students is not effective that cause of the absence of the students in schools.

(Saban, 2002) the most effective way is to make the students active at the highest level

during the process of learning and to make them responsible for their own learning. He states

that students should be the ones responsible for their own learning. (Clark, 2008; Corley, 2012)

If the school is cold, not secure, or if there is a climate of tolerance for bullying, students will

prefer not to be in school. He states if the students will not feel comfortable and safe in their

schools they will just prefer not to go to school.

10
II.3 Psychological Factors

Absenteeism from school in children and adolescents is a problem that impacts the social,

emotional and educational development of the children (Haarman, 2011). While absenteeism can

be seen as a short-term condition, prolonged absenteeism during childhood may be a predictor of

lasting issues that may persist into adulthood (King, Ollendick and Tonge, 1995), such as

“school dropout, delinquency and occupational and relationship problems” (Kearney and

Bensaheb,2006), and economic deprivation and social, marital, occupational and psychiatric

problems (Kearney and Graczyk, 2014). Early absenteeism has been associated with school

dropout, furtherdisconnecting the children from school based health programs and leading the

children into economic deprivation, and marital, social and psychiatric problems in adulthood

(Kogan, Luo, Murry and Brody, 2005). Furthermore, absenteeism may be an indication of

“suicide attempt, perilous sexual behaviour, teenage pregnancy, violence, unintentional injury,

driving under the influence of alcohol, and alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other substance

abuse” (Kearney, 2008). Haarman, (2011) states that absenteeism from school can affect the

social, emotional, and educational outcome of a child. On the other hand, short term absenteeism

during childhood is prolonged it will be a lasting issue on his/her adulthood (King, Ollendick and

Tonge, 1995). Absenteeism is interfuse with school dropout that deprives them to health

programs associated with mental health held in their schools. Leading the children into economic

deprivation, marital, social and psychiatric problems in adulthood (Kogan, Luo, Murry and

Brody, 2005). In this case absenteeism is one of the indicators why children commit suicide,

perilous sexual behavior, teenage pregnancy, violence, unintentional injury, driving under the

11
influence of alcohol, and marijuana, alcohol, tobacco, and other substance abuse ” (Kearney,

2008).

Dropping out of school, although defined by a single event reflects a long process of

disengagement and withdrawal from schooling and educational institutions, (Finn, 1989,

Newman, Wehlage, & Lamborn, 1992). In order to understand and reduce the problem of

students dropping out of school researchers should first investigate the early warning signs in

students behavior before it escalates to students actually leaving school. Studies of students who

dropout of school shows long-term patterns of students who may be having difficulties at home

and or in school at a very early age. Research has shown that students who eventually drop out of

school are absent more often than other students beginning as early as the first grade. Research

on truancy and absenteeism suggests that students with better attendance score higher on

achievement tests than their more frequently absent peers (Lamdin, 1998). School dropout

reflects a long process of withdrawal from educational institutions. To understand and reduce the

cases of absenteeism researcher should investigate thoroughly the early signs of the behavior of

students before the students actually leave the school. Studies shows that students may be

experiencing hard times in schools or at home. Research also shows that students who often go

to school have higher scores on achievement tests than those who absent frequently.

Lewis and Doorlog (1995) also presented two major types of behavior that usually are of

concern to the teacher: inappropriate classroom behavior and poor study skills. Behavior that

interferes with classroom instruction impede social interaction with teachers and peers are

considered as classroom conduct problems. Lewis and Doorlog (1995) states that there are two

major types of behavior that a teacher should handle: inappropriate classroom behavior and poor

study skills.

12
Aside from financial difficulties, school-related causes such as loss of interest and lack of

motivation are also associated with dropping out. Teacher factor is particularly most prominent

among young boys. As for older boys, family and peers wield a strong influence on their school

attendance; family problems and peer pressure affect attendance and performance in school.

(Obrador 2014). He states that aside from financial difficulties, there are causes of absenteeism

that is related in their school which is loss of interest and lack of motivation. Guidance of the

teacher is very prominent among young boys. As for teen age boys, family and friends have a

strong influence on their school attendance. Peer pressure and family problems affect the

attendance and performance of a teen age boy in school.

Among a number of factors, truancy has been named as one of the problems affecting the

future of the youth. It is said that it is one of the indicator that the young person is giving up and

losing motivation to attend school. Student absenteeism can lead to low academic achievement,

school dropout, delinquency, and gang involvement. (Leonardia 2016). She said that absenteeism

is one of the problems affecting the future of the youth, it is one of the signs that a student is

giving up and losing motivation to attend school. Student absenteeism can lead to low academic

achievement, school dropout, delinquency, and gang involvement.

Many school learners fail in their studies due to their inability to cope with the daily

obstacles and demands in school according to Villa (2009). Many factors are enumerated to be

the cause of such failures, but the most identified one and the worst is lack of study among

learners. Villa (2009) states that many students tend to absent because of the inability to cope

with their numerous activity in school. She said that there are many factors affecting student

absenteeism but the most identified one is lack of study among learners.

13
According to Marquez (2009), pupils who are very successful in their desired career have

good study habits. She stated that pupils should apply these habits to all of their classes. She also

suggested that the pupils should not try to study all the subjects in just a period. She added that if

the pupils try to do too much studying at one time, they will tire and their studying will not be

effective. Marquez (2009) said that the student who are successful in their dream career have

good study habit, she also stated that students should apply their good study habits in all of their

subjects at the same time, she also added that if the students try to study all of their subject at the

same time their studying will not be effective.

14
CHAPTER III

Research Methodology

This chapter discusses the research methodology used in the study. This chapter will

cover all aspects concerning the overall data in the research. The following chapter presents the

research design, the research instruments, data gathering procedure and the data analysis

procedure implemented in the study. It also includes the validated research instrument given to

the respondents and the data collecting procedure.

III.1 Research Design

Research design indicates the structure and procedure followed to answer survey research

questions. The researchers used the descriptive design, which concerns gathering data from a

huge number of respondents. A descriptive design of research concerns gathering from Senior

High Students of Carlos P. Garcia High School. It was randomly selected by the researchers

because the study comprises of a huge number of respondents. This method consists of using a

questionnaire, which had undergone a series of a test for validation and verification from several

experts.

III.2 Research Instrument

The factors which resulted to absenteeism, in terms of personal factors, family factors,

environmental factors, using the gathered data, along with the student’s opportunity to learn,

expected outcomes of their studies, the quality of learning, student’s attitude towards

15
absenteeism, and their participation in class will depicts the efforts the students put in their

studies. Through that, the results will reveal the student’s academic performance. The current

study attempts to find if the following factors would affect the student’s absenteeism, and to

know the relationship between the student absenteeism and their academic performance.

There are part of the questionnaire which describe the extent or how much is the

involvement of the students in absenteeism. A Nominal Scale was used to allow the respondents

to express how much they agree or disagree with a particular statement.

III.3 Data Gathering Procedure

For the purpose of this research, a questionnaire was used to determine the level of

absenteeism, possible causes and effects of absenteeism among Senior High Students in Carlos

P. Garcia High School, School Year 2019-2020.

All the data gathered from the respondents were organized, tallied, tabulated, and

presented in a series of tables and graphs. Frequency counts, percentage weighted value and

weighted mean were used in the analysis and interpretation of data.

The researchers also used internet to gather different data that is related to the research

topic which is used to compare the studies.

III.4 Data Analysis

Content analysis is conducted in this research to know the validity and importance of the

data gathered. The main goal of data analysis is to reduce and simplify the gathered data. With

data analysis the researchers knew the research was a quantitative research.

16

79 average and 0% have 75 below average.

21
Table 3. Possible causes of absenteeism

22
According to the data gathered using the survey the mostly picked reason for absenteeism

is the reason of feeling lazy and about 21 students (70%) of them have agreed which concluded

that most of the students don’t come to school for the reason of laziness or tardiness.

Second is peer pressure and around 21 students (70%) of them have agreed which cause

by the people that surround the students, like their friends that convinced them to absent from

school.

Third is the financial problem and about 19 students (63.33%) of them have agreed, that

some of the students are facing economic difficulties, causing them for not having allowance

(baon) and to work part-time job that results for not being in school.

Fourth is that the students have behavioral or emotional problem that interfere the

learning process and around 19 students (63.33%) of them have agreed, that some of the students

are dealing with mental health issues.

Having a family problem and about 17 students (56.67%) of them have agreed, that some

of the students are in a situation where they are involved with family matter that make it hard for

them to have peace of mind and be productive.

The lack of sleep and about 17 students (56.67%) of them have agreed, that resulted from

the students staying up late because of their personal matter, assignments, uses of social media

and online games.

23
The lecturer time table scheduled not the right hour and quality of lectures have 23

students (76.67%) who answered disagree and depicts that the teachers are not particularly

involved for the students tardiness or absenteeism.

The needs of the students to attend extracurricular activities which about 18 students

(60%) have disagreed, that shows of not directly affects the attendance of the students.

Some of the students retain to their homes for a reason that they have to take care one or

more of their family member and about 21 students (70%) of them have disagreed. In accordance

to the result of the survey, bullying is also a reason of absenteeism of a students, but not mostly

chosen because out of 30 respondents 13 students (43.33%) of them have agreed with bullying.

Always feeling sick and about 18 students (60%) have disagreed by having flu, cold, and

illness causes small number of students to not attend the class. And lastly 18 students (60%) have

disagreed with the students are not interested in a particular subject because they not bored in

class.

Table 4. Possible effects of absenteeism

24
In accordance to the data we’ve gathered students absenteeism mostly effected the

student’s carried marks with 23 (76.67%) students have agreed and 7 students (23.33%)

disagreed. 22 (73.33%) students agreed that when they absent from school they’re unable to

participate in group activities, 8 (26.67%) of them disagreed. 21 (70%) students agreed that

because of their absences their knowledge about their subject lessons are outdated compared to

their classmates 9 (30%) students disagreed. and because of their outdated knowledge, whenever

they have test or quizzes and exams they fail to get a high or passing score 21 (70%) students

have agreed with that statement an 9 (30%) students have disagreed.

As a result to that, 21 (70%) students agreed to have a low academic performance and

9 (30%) of them disagreed. The result also reveals that because of absenteeism 20 (66.67%)

students agreed that they might fail to graduate on scheduled date, or be retained in their year

level and the rest of them disagreed which is equivalent to 10 (33.33%) students.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

V.1 Introduction

This chapter presented the summary, conclusion and recommendations on the

Relationship between Students Absenteeism and their Academic Performance of Senior high

Students in Carlos P. Garcia High School, School Year 2019-2020.

V2. Summary

This study was structured into five chapters in order to effectively carry out this research.

26
Chapter one depicts the background of the study, the statement of the problem, including the

objectives, the scope and delimitation. In line with the research objectives, and four research

questions. The study will help the students to realize the importance of being in school.

The second chapter discussed the local and foreign literature reviews that are related to the study.

The researchers include the different factors affecting student’s absenteeism.

The third chapter showed the study methodology which included the descriptive research design,

30 randomly picked respondents from senior high students in Carlos P. Garcia High School, the

researchers used survey questionnaire as their research instrument.

The fourth chapter indicates the interpretation and discussion of the findings. The demographic

profile such as the specialization, gender, and age. It was found out that the less they attend in

their classes the more it affects their academic performance.

Chapter five gave a summary of the whole study, conclusion as well as recommendations based

on the findings of the study.

V.3 Conclusion

By all counts and proven results it is no wonder that the student absenteeism affects the

student academic performance. And the students with many absences tends to have a low

mark/grades and the students with minimal days of absences are most likely to have an

outstanding and high grades in their academic performance.

V.4 Recommendation

The following recommendations are hereby stated as a result of the study:

27
Since the study shows that the student’s absenteeism affects the academic performance of

senior high school students, it is important that the students are aware of the result of their

absenteeism. Thus, the teachers’ and parents’ participation in motivating and guiding the

students is needed.

Imbibe in the mind of the student that their academic success is very much dependent on

their attitude towards school. Motivate them so they will be looking forward to attending their

classes regularly. For those who wake up late, encourage them to have an alarm clock. Do not

scold the student who come late. Give them a time-table to change their sleeping habit for the

better.

In addition, considering that the result of the study revealed that most of the students are

troubled with behavioral or emotional problem in the learning process, it is meaningful to have

counseling that deals with this situation.

V.5 Suggestion for Further Studies

In the light of the discourse, the following suggestions are therefore given to future researchers:

1. . Appropriate manipulation of the limitation of the research such as the aim and

objectives, sample size, scope of discussion and analysis

2. Re-assess and expand the theory, framework or model in the study about students

absenteeism
