Ma’am Rachma: Yeah, you must start the presentation Nur.
Rizka : Okay, Assalammu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

Rizka : Okay, so today our group from group five will be presented our material
about multimodal discourse analysis. But before we are going to explain about
our material today, let me introduced my self first. And the member of the
group it’s me Rizka Ananda Bin Ladi and my freind is Nur Putri Dea.
Next slide please, next slide. Okay for the first explanation we are
going totalk about the background to multimodal discourse analysis. First
slide, next slide, okay, here first about the definition, Multimodal Discourse
Analaysis is an approach to study text combined with images, colors, symbols
and other semiotic resources to make meaning. As you can see here semiotic
means that the study the study of how an idea or object communicate meaning
and what we what meaning it communicate. Many reading of text are
constract that not just body use of words but by a combination of words with
other modalities such as pictures film, video, images, and sound. Like we are
can look from the example of the events of 11th September is an accident
outside in that in WCC that killed a thousand people in America we can see
that from the example there are very much affected by the images they saw on
television as they went by verbal report or of the event and this use of
multimodal discourse analysis and it also it has examined print genres as well
as genres such as web pages, film and television programs. it also considers
how multimodal texts are designed and how semiotic tools such as color,
framing, focus, and positioning elements contribute to the making of meaning
in the text.
Okay next slide please, aa in here our going to talk about the
background to multimodal discourse analysis. Much of the work in
Multimodal discourse analysis draws from Halliday’s social semiotics
approach to language, a view that consider language as one among number of
semiotic semiotic resources such as :
In here there are 3 things that people use to comminicate or to make
meaning with each other. The first one is gestures, gestures is a form of non
form verbal communication or non vocal communication in which visible
bodily action communicate particular messages it included the movement of
the hands face and or other parts of the body. And then the second one is
images its mean everything like commercial and the virtual object many load
things without using language called and then the third one is music music in
here like when we are watching music video, this is this which describes a
meaning of the song and they're also sing and the song. And then from the
haliday, know that the language in this view cannot be considered in isolation
from meaning but needs to be considered within the socio cultural context in
which it occurs. Multimodal discourse analysis aims to describe the Socialist
situate semiotic researces that with draw for communication.
Next slide, and also Halliday describes three types of social meanings,
or functions that are drawn on simultaneously in the us of language. The first
one is ideational it is about what is the text about it means that a language is
used to organize understand and express our perseption of the world and of
our consitiones and then interpersonal it's about the relationship between
participant it means that language is use to enable us to participate in
communicative text with other people to take on roles and to express and
understand feelings attitud and agusment and then the textual meaning it
means that how the message is organized in here that language is used to relate
what is what it is state to do real work and to other language even this involves
the use of language to organist organized the text itself.
Next slide please, in here Jewitt describes four theoretical assumption
that underlie multimodal discourse analysis. The one is Language is part of an
ensemble of models, each of which has equal potential to contribute the
meaning. Like images, jazz and poster. But do not the suport the meaning but
their it to contribute the meaning. And two is each mode of communication
realizes different meanings. It means that and that looking at language as the
principle medium of communication on lilyfield as special views of what is
being communication is being communicated. And then third people select
from and configure these various modes in order to make meaning. Its mean
and the interaction between this modal and the distributions of meaning
between them or part of production of meaning. And then the last meanings
that are made by the use of multimodal resources are, like language, social.
And this meaning for the arseva by norms rules and social converntion for
genre that are caron at a particular time and the particular contact.
Next slide please, for the next slide will be, aa we are going to explain
about the example of multimodal discourse analysis. Next slide please, as we
can see here,  there's a picture of the magazine the picture of Michelle Obama
before that I will explain about images have been given special attention in
which of the work in multimodal discourse analysis. This images my includes
photographs, diagrams and math or cartoons an example in here the
relationship between an image and its power is strongly influenced by the
weather the subject in the image as establishes aye contact with the view are
deosn’t. And here there are 4 elements from the picture the first one is about
the layout of the page and then the social relationship on Angel shot and the
color of the text in the image. We can see that Michelle Obama look straight at
the camera, it mean that establsing eye contact between the readers and her
face also a occupied the whole page. Providing a closeness which also
involved in the reader's the image is well lit and is focus and also the shot
horizontal you can see the layout suggesting the reader is on the same level as
the subject of the image and then also the image does aims to breathe and do
an a real and yet also connect with the readers and the layout of the page and
the placement of the image are also significant they each convey a certain
information value as well communicated this client of the reader. Michelle
Obama also in this image their place in the central, so the most eye-catching is
ponder to occupy the homepage terminating it in a way that gives a particular
which on the image And then also from the color of the text it's the meaning of
Michelle showing how This element work and image clearly beloging
together.
Okay next slide please, the slide we are going to talk about the genre,
speech acts, and multimodality. Next slide please, Van Leeuwen discuss the
relationship between speech acts and genre in relation to multimodality, using
these two notions to capture the ‘how’ vs the ‘what’ of multimodal
communication. Also the key point draws from speech act theory there are two
point. The first one is Illocutionary Act that means that advertisement may aim
to persuade a person to buy a particular product. And then Perlocutionary Act
it means if the person is convinced by the advertisement and buys the product.
And also the example we here is the advertisement about fair and lovely we
can see that the problem are express by using the strategies  such as an image
of blemiss skin which accompanying text that do you suffer from skin
problems that are this is the problem of the advertisement and the solution is in
the picture if about the product for sale the result is a picture of unblemiskin
but worse and images does interact in the apartment to construct a particular
message for the people to buy the product.
Okay next slide please, okay about multimodality and global media
discourse Machin and Van Leeuwen discuss genre and Multimodality in
relation to global media discourse. And the aim is to create Perlocutionary
effect on readers. And for Readers to use or Purchase a particular service, or
product. This is for example like an advertisement in cosmopolitan magazine.
Next slide please, okay for Nur Putri Dea time is yours.

Nur Putri : Okay in this slide i will explaine about a genre and modality framework.
According to Bateman (2008), genre plays a central role in the multimodality
framework because genres are able to explain the various possibilities of how
multimodal text are realized and the ways in which we can interact with the
genre itself. And also Bateman proposes a genre and multimodalit framework
with multiple layers of descriptions for multimodal text. That is content
structure, the content related structures of the information to be
communicated. And next genre structure its mean that how delivery of the
content proceeds througt particular stage of activity. Next rhetorical structure
it’s how the ontent is argued, divided into main material and supporting
material and structured rhetorically. And next linguistic structure, the
linguistic details of any verbal elements that use in document. And next layout
structure it is the nature appearene and position of communicative elements on
the page. And the last navigation structure, that is the ways which the
intended modes of consuption of document is are supported. So each of these
structures operates within the constraints of the physical of the text produced.
Next slide please, alright multimodality and newspaper genre. There
are two type, in this slide there are two point the first is a news story and the
second newsbites. As you can see on the slide image nuclear that stories
comprise just a photograph and a heading and a caption. And the title of the
news story is ‘Dry hard with a vegeance’. The title is an idiomatic expression
that fits the subject of the photo. As we an see, there is an image of cracked
dry soil protruding in the center of the photo with rows of people in the
background carrying work tools. And also the accompanying title ‘ Die hard
with a vengeance’ is a play on the title of the 1995 American film Die hard
with a vengeance, the third in the Die hard film series.
Next slide please, okay in the second newsbites. Aa newsbites
newsbites is online newspaper texts which comprise a headline and an image
with hyperlink to a full story. As you can see on the picture, the newsbites
entitle is Benefit of strategic advertising. And under the title is a heading and
between the bottom heading there is an image on the right. And then at the
bottom there is a place that we can access to get the full story of the newsbites.
That is by clicking on the reading ‘click here to read the whole article.
Next slide please, multimodality in film and television genre.
Accoding to ledema (2001) provides a framework for the analysis of film and
television by drawing on work in film theory and genre theory. The levels of
analysis the first frame a frame is a representative still of a shot. And next
shot, in a shot the camera moovement is unedited or uncut. And next scene, in
a scene the camera remains in one time-space. And next sequence, in a
sequence the camera moves with spesific character across time-space. And
next generic stage, each genre has a specific set of stages. Stage are
beginnings, middles, and endings, for example like stage of narative consists
orientation, complications, resolution and maybe coda. And the last work as a
whole it’s depending on lowers levels the work will be move or less
classifiable as a particular ganre. Genre are predictable relation between social
cultural, industrial economic, and symbolic mythic orders.
Next slide please, alright in this slide is about multimodality and film
trailers. There are two type of trailers comedy, the first implicitly promotional,
it is relates to information that is part of the story of the film or it can be called
“diegetic information”. The stage of implicitly promotional are, prologue it
function to appetiser, and next orientation funtion to contextualization, next
complication it functions to introduction of disruptive action, and the last is
evaluation it function to interpretations of events or outcomes.
And the second explicit promotional, they often mix together
information about the story of the film and information that is not part of the
story of the film. Such as voiceover commentaries, evaluations, and
recommendations. Or it can be called non diegetic information. The stage of
explicit promotional are promotional identification, it funtions to foregrounds
meaning of film company, directors, and actors. And next peomotional
recapitulation, it funtions to introduces new orientative information from an
evaluative point of view. Next promotional interpretation, it funtions to
explains possible impacts of film upon viewers. And then promotional
recommendations, it funtions to edvises the viewers. And the last promotional
information, it funtions to introduce extra non diegetic information about
internet address, release dates, and so on. Okay i think that it from me, back to

Annisa : I want ask about multimodality in music, ee jadi multimodality dalam music
itu seperti apa, apakah ada stage atau level yang seperti contoh dalam slide
tentang multimodality in film and television? Thank you.

Elda : I am so confused about the modality discourse, I mean can you give a simple
example and classroom context. Like how the teacher can used in the
classroom? Thank you.

questions in here, so aa mam maybe we can discussed about our a there 3
questions five minutes, I think. Thank you.

multimodality discourse. And the answer will be explain by Nur Putri Dea.

Nur Putri : Thank you Rizka, I will try to answer Annisa Sabda haj question. Level or
stage dari music, seperti itu menurut saya aa in my opinion aa dari saya baca
di beberapa jurnal or level dari multimodality in discourse analysis is about the
lyric, lyric of music aa like, for example music video. Biasanya ada penari
latar itu juga dapat dimasukan kedalam level atau stage of multimodal
discourse analysis. Dan selanjutnya gestures of the penyanyi dari penyanyi
dan menurut saya itu. Mungkin dari teman-teman da yang ingin menambahkan
atau Rizka.
Rizka : Okay baiklah, mungkin saya akan menambahkan sedikit iya. Mungkin iya.

their said, that there are three, aa three language semiotic resources and the
one of them is music. Music means that like when we are wathching video it
also have multimodality discourse from the meaning music video is it have the
meaning from the video and the lyric also like aa the lyric from the music has
like konotasi, and the connotations and denotations meaning. It also can be
said as multimodality discourse analysis. Thank you. I think there are friends

Okay so, if there is no additions aa we are going to answer the
question the second questions about the Istifada question. Abou the stiker in
whatsAap in whatsAap stikers, it is also in multimodal or no.
Okay so I will answer the question, yes the stiker can be also aa can be
also the mean of the multimodal discourse, because whe we are sent stiker to
someone or our freinds we can see that the picture from the stiker has also the
meaning. Like when we are go, when we are to chat our freind we sent the
stikers like Assalammu’alaikum or sent this stiker with the picture of the
people like this or something. It that also have the meaning from this
multimodal because multimodal aa can be said the things that have the
meaning that when we are the communicate and it have the meaning from that.
I think there is also, that is also one of the example of the stiker in whatsApp
multimodality discourse analysis. From anyone, from anyone I think is there

new term and new term in discourse analysis. I repeat multimodal, multimodal

Semiotics, pragmatics, and technology. Remember the speaker
mentions about lucotion and perlucotion, before we came to the illucotion it

under umbrela of pragmatics. The umbrela is pragmatic under pragmatic we

But of course in terms of music and sticker whatsapp is a very simple
multimodal discourse analysis. If you need multi modal Analysis you need to
analyze A film. In the film there is a speech act. There is image of gesture that
talks about semiotic And technology and it’s very complete analysis what a
when we conduct about multimode discourse analysis. Is a need for you to
analyze a film Or a drama.

Denotative meaning is The meaning of utterance based on Dictionary. So the

Connotative meaning is a meaning based on context.
It my has different meaning in different context. The next meaning is social
meaning or functional meaning Best on the function of the speaker and the
hearer In social life either action.

magazine want to take something from Obama or Michelle Obama to persuade
Obama because she is very powerful person at a time. Okay..

Multimodal Discourse Analysis is an approach off study text combined with
images, colors, symbols and other semiotic reources to make meaning. Print
genres for multimodal discourse succh as web pages, film, and televisiom
program with having some semiotic tools such as color, framing, focus, and
positing elements that contribute to the making of meaning in the text.
• Halliday mentioned three types that language as one among number
ofsemiotic resources there are Gestures, Images, Music the things that people use to
communicate or to make meaning, with each other.
• A genre of multimodality framework that are 6 layers
1. content structure
2. genre structure
3. rhetorical structure
4. linguistic structure
5. layout structure
6. navigation structure
Genre multimodal there are from newspaper, film and television, and film
trailer and having some stages to analysis from multimodal aspects from them.
