Jethro Porin: Math 212 (CE) Engg Data Analysis (Prob. & Stat)

The document provides solutions to two math problems involving quartiles and deciles. For the first problem, it computes the first quartile (Q1 = 42.7) and third quartile (Q3 = 75.9) using the given frequency distribution of exam scores. For the second problem, it calculates the first decile (D1 = 29.5) and fifth decile (D5 = 54.83) using a similar frequency distribution and decile formula. The summary includes the key steps and formulas used to arrive at the quartile and decile values.

Assignment #3 Quartiles and Deciles

1. Consider the following frequency distributions of the examination scores of sixty students
in a math class. Compute the value of the first quartile and the third quartile?
Classes f <cumf
12-23 3 9
24-35 6 9
36-47 10 19
48-59 18 37
60-71 15 52
72-83 6 58
84-95 2 60

kn/4−cumf b
(
Qk = X b +
f ak )c

Solution:
1. Get ¼ of the total number of frequencies.
n/4 = 60/4 = 15
2. Get the value of the cumulative frequency before the first quartile class
cumfb = 9
3. Determine the first quartile class.
1st quartile class: 36 – 47
4. Determine the lower boundary of the first quartile class.
xb = 36 – 0.5 = 35.5
5. Get the frequency of the first quartile class.
fQ1 = 10
6. Substitute
kn/4−cumf b
(
Qk = X b +
f ak ) c ; For the first quartile, k = 1

15−9
Q 1=35.5+ ( 10 ) 12
Q 1=¿ 42.7
To compute the value of Q3,
1. 3n/4 = 3 (60)/4 = 45
2. cumfb = 37
3. 3rd quartile class:
60 – 71
4. xb = 60 – 0.5 = 69.5
5. fQ3 = 15

6. Substitute
3 n/ 4−cumf b
(
Q 3= X b +
f ak )
c For the third quartile, k = 3

45−37
Q 3=69.5+ ( 15 )
12
Q3=75.9

2. Considering the frequency distribution of the examination scores of the statistics class,
determine the value of the 1st Decile and the 5 Deciles?

Classes f <cumf
12-23 3 3
24-35 6 9
36-47 10 19
48-59 18 37
60-71 15 52
72-83 6 58
84-95 2 60

kn/10−cumf b
(
Dk = X b +
f dk
c )
Solution To compute the value of D1,
1. kn/10 = 1 (60)/10 = 6
2. cumfb = 3
3. 1st decile class:
24 – 35
4. xb = 24 – 0.5 = 23.5
5. fD1 = 6
6. Substitute
1 n/10−cumf b
(
Dk = X b +
fd1
c )
6−3
D 1=23.5+ ( )6
12
D1=29.5

To compute the value of D5,

1. 5n/10 = 5 (60)/10 = 30
2. cumfb = 19
3. 5th decile class: 48 – 59
4. xb = 48 – 0.5 = 47.5
5. fD5 = 18
6. Substitute
5 n/10−cumf b
(
D 5= X b +
fd5 ) c

30−19
D 5=47.5+ ( 18 ) 12
D 5=54.83
