Introduction to Technology for Teaching and Learning : Written Report

Abstraction:

The following terms and concepts are related to technology that you need to digest. 1. Technology refers to
methods, processes, and devices used for practical purposes. It includes instruments from pencil and paper to
modern electronic gadgets and tools for the practical task. 2. Information and Communication Technology and
Literacy or ICT Literacy is the use of digital technology, communication tools and networks to access, manage,
integrate, evaluate, create and communicate information (Guro 21, 2011).

Introduction:

In this 21st century, the term “technology” is an important issue in many fields including education. This is

because technology has become the knowledge transfer highway in most countries. Technology integration

nowadays has gone through innovations and transformed our societies that has totally changed the way people

think, work and live (Grabe, 2007). As part of this, schools and other educational institutions which are

supposed to prepare students to live in “a knowledge society” need to consider ICT integration in their

curriculum (Ghavifekr, Afshari & Amla Salleh, 2012).

Changes in computer and information technology are having a profound influence on learning and teaching in

the 21st century. Traditionally, the Internet has been a medium for research and information-gathering. In recent

years, new models of education, social-networking sites, the open-source and open-access movements and

advances in mobile technologies have transformed teaching and learning practices (Siemens & Conole 2011;

Siemens & Tittenberger 2009). Web-based tools such as wikis, blogs, e-books, online videos and podcasts offer

new avenues for multimedia computing and multisensory learning.

Here are some basic concepts to be defined :

A. Technology
Refers to a mix process and product used in the application of knowledge. It includes tools from pencil and
paper to the latest electronic gadgets and tools for practical tasks.

B. Information and Communication

The use of digital technology, communication tools and /or networks to access, manage, integrate,
evaluate, create, and communicate information in order to function in a knowledge society.

C. Educational Technology
Refers to the use of technology in teaching and learning. Educational technology includes both the non-
digital and digital.

D. Technology, media, and learning

Is any type of learning that is accompanied by technology or by instructional practice that makes effective
use of technology. It encompasses the application of a wide spectrum of practices which included blended
or virtual learning. It can come as online or offline which utilizes digital technology.

E. Instructional System and Instructional Technology

Is the theory of practice and design, development, utilisation, management, and evaluation of processes
and resources of learning (Association for Educational Communications and Technology, Seels, B.B.
&Richey, P.C. 1994).

F. Technology Tools
Is an instrument used for doing work. It can be anything that help you to accomplish your goal with the
use of technology.
These technology tools can be classified as:
1. Data or calculation tools. Examples: spreadsheets, Excels, Sketchpads, probability constructor
2. Design tools. These are used to make models and design, creating, and building. Included here are
Family Tree Maker, GollyGee, and Crazy Machines, among others.
3. Discussion tools. Four different approaches utilize discussion and interaction on the Internet. These
are threaded discussion forum, Blogging, Live chat, and Video Teleconferencing, Netiquette, and
Safety on the Net.

4. Email tools. Emails are great communication tools for sending messages, photographs, videos, and
other files. It allows you to reach out to others around the world. Examples are google mail, Ymail,
Yahoo mail, and many more.

5. Handheld devices. Handheld devices have become popular among learners. These include Personal
Digital Assistants, global positioning system, (GPS) and Geographic Information system (GIS) in the
classroom, Portable electronic keyboards, Digital cameras, Mobile phones, Palm, Handheld
computers.

Roles of Technology for Teaching According to Stosic (2015), educational technology has three domains:

1. Technology as a tutor. Technology can support the teachers, tutors and other professionals to help
students learn better.
2. Technology as a teaching tool. Technology can be used as an instrument in teaching.
3. Technology as a learning tool. Technology makes learning easier and more effective. Use these tools for
learning for life.

Information and Communication Technology and Literacy or ICT Literacy

ICT Literacy is the use of digital technology, communication tools and networks to access, manage, integrate,
evaluate, create and communicate information (Guro 21, 2011).

Roles of ICT in teaching and learning :

 Assists students in accessing digital information efficiently and effectively.

 Supports student-centered and self-directed learning.
 Produces a creative learning environment.
 Promotes collaborative learning in a distance-learning environment.
 Offer more opportunities to develop critical thinking (higher order) thinking skills.
 Improve teaching and learning quality. According to Lowther there are three important characteristics
needed to develop good quality teaching and learning ICT : 1) Autonomy 2) Capability 3) Creativity
 ICT helps teachers in both pre-service and in-Service teachers training.
 ICT helps teachers to interact with students.
 It helps them in preparation their teaching, provide feedback.
 ICT also helps teachers to access with institutions and Universities, NCERT,
 NAAC NCTE and UGC etc.
 It also helps in effective use of ICT software and hardware for teaching –
learning process.
 It helps in improve Teaching skill, helps in innovative Teaching.
 It helps in effectiveness of classroom.
 It also helps in improving professional Development and Educational
management as well as enhances Active Learning of teacher Trainees.
 It is now replacing the ancient technology. As we know now-a day’s students
are always have competitive mind. So teacher must have the knowledge of the
subject. This can be done through ICT.
 It removes the traditional method of teaching and prepare teacher to apply
modern method of teaching.
 ICT is plays an important role in student evaluation.
 ICT is store house of educational institution because all educational
information can safely store through ICT.
 ICT helps Teacher to communicate properly with their students. So ICT bridge
the gap between teacher and students.
 ICT helps Teacher to pass information to students within a very little time.
 ICT helps Teacher to design educational environment.
 ICT helps Teacher to identify creative child in educational institute.

Conclusion :
Important terms and concepts related to technology were defined and discussed like technology, educational
technology, instructional technology, information and communication technology, digital literacy and digital
learning, digital tools, technology tool, and other terms related to modern technology.

In addition, educational technology has three domains: tutor, a teaching tool, and a learning tool. Educational
technology is useful for teachers for it augments their performance in teaching. It is also beneficial for students
because it supports learning, improves communication skills, and enhances higher-order thinking skills.

Furthermore, using ICT tools and equipment will prepare an active learning environment that is more interesting
and effective for both teachers and students. ICT in education would enhance student learning. ICT integration in
schools will result in a huge success and benefits for both teachers and students as teaching-learning process
takes place. Also, ICT implementation in education generally means technology-based teaching and learning
process that closely relates to the utilization of learning technologies in schools.

With this purpose in mind, the remarkable innovation of digital media has changed the perception of learning and
teaching process, and has led us to rethink the way we teach with digital technologies. Thus, creating and
implementing a theory-based course for learning and teaching with technologies is a challenging procedure.
However, with deeper understanding and appreciation of the role and impact of educational technologies in the
classroom, we can create a more creative and holistic education.
