7E-LESSON-PLAN-MODULE-2-Structure of An Atom

This document outlines a lesson plan on the structure of atoms. The 60-minute lesson aims to teach students about subatomic particles like protons, electrons, and neutrons. Students will learn to identify these particles, determine atomic numbers and masses, and calculate numbers of protons, electrons, and neutrons in atoms. The lesson uses pictures, questions, group work and examples from the periodic table to help students explore and explain atomic structure.

Grade Level Grade 8

Time Allotment 60 mins
Performance Standards

Present how the water behaves in its different states within the water cycle
Learning Competencies and Objectives

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. name and describe the subatomic particles;
2. determine the number of protons and electrons of an atom; and
3. identify the atomic number, atomic mass and number of neutrons of an atom.

EXPLORE (30 minutes)

Ask the students to answer the following question. PowerPoint Presentation

Periodic table
Q1. What are the three different tiny particles that make up an atom and their respective Laptop
charges?
3 particles of the atom are: Protons, electron, and neutrons,
Their respective are: positive (+1), negative (-1), neutral (0)

Q2. What is the atomic number of an atom?

Number of Proton

Q3. What is atomic mass of an element?

atomic mass of an element is the total number of protons and netrons in the nucleus
of the atom.

Q4. How to calculate the number of neutrons using the atomic mass?
The atomic mass is used to calculate the number of neutrons in one atom of an
element. In order to calculate number of neutrons you must subtract the atomic number
from the atomic mass.

Q5. What the atomic mass of an atom which contains 28 protons, 28 electrons, and 34
neutrons? Why?
Atomic mass is 62. By using formula, number of proton add to number of neutron.

Let the students to complete the table by filling in the Correct of data

Remember:
The number of neutrons= the atomic mass minus the of
protons
 The number of protons = the atomic number
(Note: You may use Periodic table of elements)

Elements Atomic Number Atomic Mass No. of Neutrons

1.Arsenic 33 75 42
2.Tunsten 74 184 110
3.Plutonium 94 244 150
4.Yttrium 39 89 50
5.Lead 82 207 125

Ask to student to match column A with the correct answer on column B. Write only the
letter of answer.
A B
d 1. Location of protons in an atom a. +1
d 2. Location of neutron in an atom b. Outside nucleus
b 3. Locations of electrons in an atom c. -1
a 4. Charge of protons in an atom d. Inside Nucleus
c 5. Charge of electrons in an atom

Ask student to indicate whether each statement is true or false. Write your answer in a
sheet of paper. (Use your periodic table).

False1. Gallium has 31 electrons and 23 protons in its atom.

True 2. Selenium is a non-metal element that contains 34 electrons.

True 3. An element that contains 4 electrons and 4 protons is Beryllium.

True 4. Gold is a malleable and ductile metal that placed in atomic number 79, therefore

its protons and electrons is also 79.

False 5. Hydrogen is the lightest element in the periodic table that contains 2 protons and
1 electron.

INTERDISCIPLINARY- can be integrated with Mathematics subject.

CONTEXTUALIZATION- the materials used in the lesson are available in the community.

number?

ELABORATE (5 minutes )

Ask some volunteer students to complete the leading the statements to describe protons,
electrons, and neutrons.

1. My chosen word is ELECTRONS

First, I know that electron have negative charge
In addition, I know it is located outside the nucleus
Finally, I know that electrons have an electric charge of -1, which is equal but
opposite charge of a proton, which is +1.
Now, you know something that I know on electrons are a type of subatomic particle
with a negative charge

2. My chosen word is PROTONS

First, I know that protons have positive charge
In addition, I know it is located inside the nucleus
Finally, I know the number of protons in an atom of an element is its atomic
number
Now, you know something that I know on protons are a subatomic particle with a
positive charge

3. My chosen word is NEUTRONS

First, I know that neutrons have no charge-they are electrically neutral.
In addition, I know it is located inside the nucleus
Finally, I know that the number of neutrons is equal to the difference between
mass number of the atom and the atomic number
Now, you know something that I know on neutrons a subatomic particle of about
the same mass as a proton but without an electric charge present in
all atomic nuclei except those of ordinary hydrogen.
