DLP Isotopes

The document provides a detailed lesson plan for a science class on isotopes. The lesson plan outlines learning objectives, content, resources, procedures, and activities. The procedures involve introducing isotopes, providing examples of hydrogen isotopes and their isotopic symbols, and having students answer examples of oxygen isotopes on the board. The lesson aims to help students understand that elements can have different isotopes with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons, and isotopes contribute to relative atomic masses.

DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 8

School Parayao National High School Grade Level 8

Teaching Intern Lorna M. Camposano Quarter 3
Learning Area Science Teaching Dates & Duration March 15, 2023
1 HOUR
I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Content Standards The learners demonstrate his/her understanding about
isotopes
Performance Standards The learners should be able to participate in activities to better
understand the isotopes and their properties
Learning Competencies/Code
Objectives
 Knowledge Define an isotope in order to identify the different isotopes of
an element.
 Skills Recall that elements can have many different isotopes to
explain why the existence of isotopes contribute toward the
relative atomic masses of some element.
 Attitude Calculate the relative atomic mass of an element from relative
masses and abundance of its isotope

Good morning ma’am!
Good morning class!
You may now take your seat.
Checking of attendance
Is there anybody absent today?
So, before we start. I would like to introduce
myself first and after I introduced myself that Yes ma’am/No ma’am
I would like to play a short game. Class do
you know the ‘2 truths and 1 lie’.
‘2truths and 1lie’ means I give three “facts”
about myself and guess which those three are Yes ma’am
truth and which are those are lie. It’s that
okay with you class?
Now, after introducing myself, it’s your turn
to introduce yourself and give ‘2 truths and 1 (The students will introduce
lie’ and it’s my turn to guess which those are themselves and give’2truths
truths and lie. and 1lie’)

Thankyou class for the active participation!

Now, class I want to discuss to all of you my
rules and regulations inside this classroom. I
have here 5 rules and regulations.
1. Maintain cleanliness
2. Treat others with respect at all times
3. Listen to the teacher when he/she speaks
4. Ask for help when you need it/raise your
hand if you have questions
5. No to cuss word

Do you have any questions about my rules None ma’am

and regulations class?
If you don’t have any questions or
clarification. Can we start now to our lesson? Yes ma’am

Okay, in your previous lesson you talk about

Subatomic Particles in atoms and Ions. Yes ma’am
Right?

Can someone tell me what is Sub-atomic (One students will answer the
particles? questions)
And what are those three particles that we
talk about?
Okay, What about ions? Is there someone (One students will answer the
knows what is ions? questions)
(The students will raising
their hand)
Very Good Class!
In that case, can we proceed now to the our
next topic?
Yes ma’am
B. Establishing a Class, did you bring your periodic table? Yes ma’am/No ma’am.
purpose for the new
lesson The reason why I ask if you bring your
periodic table it is because our topic today
will use the periodic table.

Okay class, listen. Did you know that the (The students will listening)
elements on the periodic table sometimes
undergo changes that turn them into different
chemicals.
One example of this is when an element
become an isotope.

So, here I would like to discuss to all of you

what is Isotope?

Can someone read what is the meaning of (One students will read the
isotopes? meaning of isotopes)

Okay Thank you. You may take your sit.

So, Isotopes are atoms with the same number

of protons, but different number of neutrons.
Since the number of protons or the identity of
an elements are fix for all naturally
occurring.

Okay, in order to understand what is isotope,

I have here an example.

For examples: Isotopes of Hydrogen

Yes ma’am

Can you see the picture class?

So as you can see the first diagram will be
the protium, the second will be the deuterium
and the third will be the tritium and these
three are the isotopes of hydrogen.

So, we will discuss it one by one in order to

understand it clearly.
The first one which is protium or simply
known has hydrogen has 1 proton and there’s
no neutron. Okay? So if you will going to
write this in isotopic symbol for this first
isotope of hydrogen. We will write first the
element symbol and the atomic mass and Yes ma’am
atomic number or Hydrogen -1. So the Z here
which is atomic number is 1 and you’re A
here which is the mass number is 1 also. Do
you understand class?

Very good!
Next, will be the deuterium. So as you can
see here, deuterium has 1 proton and 1
neutron. Okay? So, if we will going to write
this in isotopic symbol. We will write H(2)
(1) or Hydrogen -2. So here, the atomic
number (z) is 1 and the mass number (a) is 2.

And the third, which tritium. In here, we have

1 proton and 2 neutron. So, if we will write it
in isotopic symbol. We will write the element
symbol H, mass number 3 and atomic
number 1 or Hydrogen -3.

So, as we summarize it. As I’ve talked about

earlier isotope has the same element but
different in number of neutrons or the mass
number. So, as you can see in this isotope of
hydrogen, the protium has a 1 atomic number
and 1 atomic mass. But, in deuterium and
tritium have the same atomic number which
is 1 but when it comes to mass number or the
number of neutron it’s different.
So, if we will take the proton and neutron in
the protium, will be p+=1 and n(0)=0. In the
deuterium the number of p+=1 and number
of n(0)=1. And in the tritium, the number of
p+=1 and the number of n(0)=2.

So, did you see the difference of the three

class? They have the same atomic number
but different when it comes to mass number
or the number of neutrons. And that’s the Yes ma’am
explain of Isotopes.

Do you understand class?

Very Good!
C. Presenting Now, I will give you another example and try
instances/ examples it to answer on the board.
of the lesson
Isotope of Oxygen:

Okay class, who would like to answer and (Students will raise their

What about the mass number and atomic
number?

Okay, Very Good!

What about the second and the third diagram. Ma’am! Ma’am! (raising their
Who would like to answer it on the board. hands)
Alright. Very Good class!
All your answer are correct, thank you for
answering.
D. Discussing new Now, I want to keep you in your mind class
concepts and that;
practicing new skills  It is not possible to determine how
#1 many different in isotopes exist by
looking at the periodic table.
 It is not possible to determine the
frequency of various nucleus by
looking at the periodic table.

Again class, for brief recap on our lesson Are atoms having the same
today. Isotopes are what? atomic number but with
different mass number,

Very Good! Protium, Deuterium and

What about the three isotopes of hydrogen Tritium Ma’am.
that we discuss earlier. What are those?

Alright!
So, do you have any questions class? None Ma’am
E. Discussing new Okay, in that case. Since you already know
concepts and what is isotope. Let’s move on to the next
practicing new skills activity. Please get ½ crosswise and answer
#2 this questions.
