SECTION 27 51 16 - PUBLIC ADDRESS & EVACUATION SYSTEM

PART 1. GENERAL

1.1. RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and General Provision of the Contract including General Conditions, Conditions of
particular Application and Division-I Specification Sections, apply to work of this Section.

1.2. SUMMARY

A. This Section includes equipment for amplifying, distributing, and reproducing sound signals
including the following:
1. Shall be Certified EN54-16 or approved equivalent by the engineer.
2. Paging microphone.
3. Network controller
4. Power amplifiers and equipment racks.
5. Loudspeakers and distribution network.
6. Interface with fire alarm system.

B. The voice alarm system shall be the integrated solution, scalable (modular amplifier expansi
on), IP and fiber networkable, for BGM (Background Music) and EVAC (Emergency Voice
Alarm). The voice alarm system shall be designed for public address and emergency
evacuation. All the essential EVAC functionality, such as system supervision, spare
amplifier switching, loudspeaker line surveillance, digital message management and a
fireman’s panel interface shall be combined.
C. Suitable output shall be available to supply power to external relays, so no external power su
pply shall be required for that purpose. A LED VU-meter shall allow for monitoring of the
master output.

1.3. DEFINITIONS

A. Channels: Separate 2 parallel signal paths, from sources to loudspeakers or loudspeaker


zones, with separate amplification and switching that permit selection between paths for
speaker alternative program signals.
B. Zone: A separate group of loudspeakers and associated supply wiring that may be arranged
for selective switching between different channels.

1.4. SCOPE OF WORKS

B. The Public Address and Evacuation system shall be installed as part of the contract to relay
audible messages throughout the project in the event of any fire, fault or test condition. The
Contractor shall install audio control units, distributed amplifier units, audio amplifiers,
speakers as required to facilitate a complete and operable system.

C. This Section includes equipment for the supply, delivery, installation, testing, commissioning
and maintenance of the Public Address System including, but not limited to the following:

1. Recessed mount (ceiling), surface mount, column and / or horn speakers, sound
projectors,

2. Box and bi-directional box speaker’s coupled with line matching transformers and
volume controls, where applicable.

3. Termination of all cables to speakers, power amplifiers, etc.

4. Equipment rack complete with forced air ventilation fan(s), mounting brackets blank
panels, terminal boards, etc.

5. Main equipment and all associated auxiliary equipment.

6. Distribution cabling, including fire rated cables, where applicable, cable ladders, racks
and Cable supporting systems (cable trunking and concealed metal conduits)

7. All other works and materials necessary for the efficient operation of the whole audio
system Complete with power supply requirements and surge arrestors and filters.

8. The public address and voice alarm system should be presented in an enclosure with
inbuilt amplifiers, surveillance cards, batteries and shall be certified in compliance to
EN54 – 16 VACIE or equivalent, with integral battery backup and charging facilities.
The unit shall operate on a standalone basis or via a choice of fiber or copper
networking as part of a networked voice alarm solution. Each system enclosure shall
have the capacity to drive up the number of zones shown in the drawings, with a
maximum loudspeaker load indicated on the drawings.

9. The zones shall further be grouped according to function so that it shall be possible to
make an announcement by depressing just one switch on the call station.

a. The system shall be supplied & commissioned by a specialist company who are
authorized agent.

b. All the main equipment of the public reference shall be from one manufacturer
and mixing of amplifiers, controller, speaker etc. from different manufacturer
is not allowed.

1.5. REFERENCE STANDARDS

A. The Voice Alarm system shall at the least be compliant with and certified according to the
mandatory requirements of Part 16 of the EN54 (EN54-16) standard for Fire Alarm products,
which specifies requirements, methods of testing and performance criteria for voice alarm
systems used in fire detection and fire alarm systems providing audible fire alarm signals
within a building.

B. The Voice Alarm system shall comply with the following optional requirements as mentioned
in the EN 54-16 standard:
Audible Warning (7.3), Phased Evacuation (7.5), Manual Silencing of the voice alarm condition
(7.6.2), Manual reset of the voice alarm condition (7.7.2), Output to Fire Alarm Devices(7.8),
Voice Alarm Condition Output( 7.9), Indication of faults related to the transaction path to the
CIE (8.3), Indication of fault related to Voice Alarm Zones(8.4), Voice Alarm Manual control
(10), Interface to external control device(s) (11), Emergency Microphone (s) (12), Redundant
power amplifiers ( 13.14)

C. The power for the VACIE shall be provided by at least two power sources, of which the standby
power source shall be rechargeable batteries that are (re)charged and maintained in a fully
charged state by EN 54-4 certified charging equipment. The batteries shall be rechargeable,
able to be maintained in a fully charged state, constructed for stationary use, and marked with
type number and production date. The batteries shall be of a brand and type as advised by
the manufacturer of the charging equipment.

1.6. SYSTEM REQUIREMENT

A. As a general approach, the system shall be capable of delivering a sound pressure level of
15dB at the listening level above the ambient noise, depending of each area type as per NFPA
requirements.

B. Paging announcements shall be possible from any of the microphone call stations, or from the
microphone paging station to any zones within the network systems.

C. The central controller shall have a means of monitoring, to continuously monitor the system
from the microphone of the call station onwards and from the PA workstation in the control
room of the Administration Building; any faults shall be displayed on the central unit.

D. Each power amplifier with 20% spare capacity shall be provided to drive all loudspeakers
during an emergency without overloading.

E. Each power amplifier shall have a built-in self-restoring protection circuit to guard against
hazards of operation such as mis-loading at its input, short circuiting of its output and
connection mistakes.

F. The power amplifiers shall have built-in line transformers for 100V loudspeaker matching, DC
input of emergency operation. It shall have amplifier monitoring and auto-changeover over
circuits and automatic volume control features built-in.

G. The power amplifiers shall have control inputs and audio inputs for interfacing for fire alarm
signals. This control inputs shall be supervised, freely programmable for any system actions
and with priorities setting. A built-in amplifier monitoring circuits shall continuously monitor
the functioning of the power amplifiers and shall automatically switch in a spare power
amplifier in case of failure of any of the amplifiers. Upon detection, the status of the fault shall
be indicated in the Central or local Monitoring. The number of spare power amplifiers to be
provided shall be ten percent of the total quantity of each range of power amplifiers.

H. All speaker lines shall be supervised for open circuit fault, short circuit fault, and short to
ground fault. Upon detection, the status of the fault shall be indicated in the central
monitoring.

1.7. QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturers: Firms regularly engaged in the manufacture of type of equipment required


for the public address system whose products have been in satisfactory use in similar service
for not less than 10 years.
B. Compliance with Local Requirements: Comply with applicable building code, local ordinances
and regulations, and requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.
C. Codes and Standards: Comply with the latest issue of:
1. EN 54: European standards

2. NFPA 70: National Electrical Code,

3. NFPA 72: National Fire Alarm Code,

4. NFPA 101: Code for Safety to Life from Fire in Buildings and Structures,

5. SBC: Saudi Building Code

1.8. SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Submit manufacturers’ data for all material, equipment and accessories of the
proposed system.
B. Submittal shall not be considered without a complete product data submittal.
C. Mark each copy to show applicable choices and options. Where product data includes
information on several products, some of which are not required, mark copies to indicate the
applicable information.
D. Provide with the tender a schedule of all equipment to be supplied with a recommended
layout of the system.
E. Shop Drawings: Submit dimensional layout on architectural background drawings. No
equipment or system shall be ordered or installed unless all such drawings are duly inspected
and approved by the Engineer.
F. Submit drawings indicating the arrangement of the main equipment of the public address
inside the rack cabinets.
G. Submit single line diagrams and riser diagrams indicating the connection between system
components and the cables used.
H. Submit list with the model number and quantity of each card/unit.
I. Submit an Acoustic Simulation using EASE Evac Program or any other specialized software
programs for all areas.
J. Compliance List: submit a detailed point by point compliance statement with this
specification. Where the proposed system does not comply or accomplish the stated
function or specification in a manner different from that described and specified a full
description of the deviation shall be provided.
K. If there are additional costs to provide a function because it is optional and not a part of the
base system, these costs must be identified. If no cost is quoted it will be assumed to be
included in the bid price. Where a full description is not provided it shall be assumed that the
proposed system does not comply with the requirements in the specification.

1.2 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Store equipment in space with environments that are controlled within manufacturer’s
ambient temperature and humidity tolerances for non-operating equipment.

1.3 WARRANTY

A. The Public Address and Evacuation system warranty shall comply with Section 01740.

1.4 EXTRA MATERIALS

A. Furnish extra materials described below that match product installed, are packaged with
protective covering for storage, and are identified with labels describing contents. Deliver
extra materials to the Employer.

PART 2. PRODUCTS

2.1. ACCEPTED MANUFACTURERS

A. Available Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering


products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Bosch
2. TOA
or other accepted equal

2.2. GENERAL

A. The Public Address and Evacuation system shall consist of combinations of Speakers as per
the site conditions, Controller, Amplifiers, cables and other accessories required to complete
the system.

B. Public address system shall be Modular and easily Scalable for future expansion.

C. The PA/VA components and system shall have been thoroughly tested and proven;
manufacturer shall be able to provide the test certificates of the hardware components used
for PA/VA.

D. Manufacturer should have at least 5 years of experience in PA/VA industry, should have a
relevant reference, the same details shall be presented to the Client when requested.

E. The installer should have minimum of 3 – 4 years of experience in installation similar systems
in the region. The references of the same to be submitted to the client on request.

F. All systems and components shall be provided with an explicit manufacturer warranty of 3 yrs.

G. Manufacturer shall propose products with latest technology, no End of life/obsolete models
shall be offered.

H. The manufacturer should possess ISO certification and should provide valid certificate along
with the submittal.

I. The manufacturer shall have at least one local regional office with technical support team in
GCC.

J. All the products proposed shall be EN-54 certified for Evacuation system.

2.3. OPERATION, DESIGN AND COMPONENTS

A. Operation: System is to be used for public address or paging. Under normal conditions, an
external audio source may be introduced as desired by the operator. Pre-recorded messages
are to be manually switched in and are to have automatic priority over the external source.
By using the microphone, operator is to have priority over audio or message inputs within the
system. Sound distribution to zones is to be controlled by zone selector controls. It shall be a
completely independent system suitable for background music and local paging /
announcements. Under emergency conditions, the Fire alarm panel shall send a signal to the
public address system for emergency message broadcasting.

B. Design Parameters: System is to be designed for public address and pre-recorded message
distribution, with uniform and acceptable level of speech intelligibility. Design shown on the
Drawings is based on selected manufacturers' models, which are to be checked for
performance before implementation. Alternative system design is to be submitted to Engineer
for approval, with specification, characteristics, aiming and mounting positions of
loudspeakers and full particulars of calculations and equipment selections.

2.4. PAGING MICROPHONE

A. Paging Microphone: Dynamic cardiod, gooseneck and desktop type, having double audio in
signal chime unit. Microphone is to be fully dust and moisture protected, designed specifically
for speech reproduction and with at least the following performance.

2.5. CENTRAL RACKS AND CABINETS

A. CENTRAL RACKS are to contain system controller, power supply module, monitor unit, power
amplifier and output terminal module. Racks are to be 483 mm standard frame racks,
withdrawable and hinged. Equipment is to be mounted and designed for 483 mm rack
mounting.

B. CABINETS are to be 483 mm frame, totally enclosed, with side and rear panels removable, and
cable entrance at rear, top or bottom. Surface finish is to be textured and of approved color.
Frames are to be anodized aluminum sections. Each frame is to be provided with ventilation
rack, including automatically operated fan with thermostatic control. Suitable ventilation
openings are to be provided. Enclosure is to be IP 42 to IEC 144 for indoor installation.

C. Storage: Rack cabinets are to have storage drawers for cables and accessories.

D. Mains Wiring: Equipment is to operate from 230 V, 60 Hz mains and is to be capable of


continuous operation under any load conditions with variations of +/- 10% of nominal voltage.
Mains wiring inside console are to be totally segregated from low-level signal wiring.

E. Electric connections, other than those for low-level signals, are to be by push-on spade clips
or multi-connector blocks.

F. Power Supply: Complete power supply unit is to be provided, independently fused on the live
conductor, with mains front indicator light, on/off switch, cartridge-type fuse and fuse-holder
with blown fuse indicator lamp. Standby power is to be available from source shown on the
Drawings.

2.6. NETWORK CONTROLLER

A. General: The network controller allows connecting decentralized equipment (amplifier


cabinet) on the network with greater reliability and flexibility. Network controller functions as
a matrix and router and can convert digital channels into analog audio signals to the amplifiers
and analog audio signals into digital channels. They shall have at least 4 inputs and 4 outputs.

B. Features: A menu-driven LCD display on the controller main frame indicates operations
carried out by mains of the function switch on the front panel, and makes set-ups and changes
easy to accomplish. A PC will be connected to the controller, which shows any status change
in the system via the configuration and logging software. It has the following features:
1. The network controller shall function as:
a. A Matrix which shall be able to assign any input to any output with priority order
selection. This is pre-defined and can be changed from main workstations.
b. A Router which can be dynamically adapted to the changing needs of the audio
installation using management software of the PAS Operation shall be done from
system workstation.
c. A recorder which shall be able to store digitized audio messages.
2. Digital Signal Processor (DSP) is a part of the network controller. The functions are:
a. Delay
b. Filter
c. Equalizer
d. Audio processing
C. Specifications

with push buttons for system navigation

2.7. MULTICHANNEL INTERFACE

A. The basic amplifiers shall be connected to a redundant loop network through a multi-channel
interface. The network interface of the multi-channel interface shall support multi-channel
digital audio and control signals.

B. The multi-channel interface shall act as an interface to 1, 2, 4 and 8 channel amplifiers that do
not have network connectivity, providing 14 configurable main output channels and 2
configurable spare output channels, to which network audio channels can be routed
dynamically. It shall deliver the audio signals to the basic amplifiers with full control over these
amplifiers.

C. The multi-channel interface shall have a supervision system to monitor the functions and
operation of both itself and the connected amplifiers. It shall be capable of activating a spare
amplifier channel to replace an amplifier channel that has reported a fault. It shall have loop
through input and output, supporting failsafe mode to pass emergency calls through to the
amplifiers, even if the unit itself fails. The unit shall support redundant group A/B switching
and class-A loop wiring of the connected basic amplifiers, for which the multi-channel
interface also shall incorporate a controller for multiple-line and loudspeaker supervision.
Network connectivity status and fault conditions shall be displayed via LEDs on the front panel,
including a status LED per connected amplifier channel. Fault conditions shall also be reported
by the unit to a network connected system controller for logging purposes.

D. It shall be possible to power the multi-channel interface from the connected basic power
amplifiers for easy installation or from the network. The unit shall be able to operate at a
maximum operating temperature of 55°C to accommodate high density rack mounting.

E. The multi-channel interface shall have 32 control inputs for activation switches, with
configurable supervision for open and short circuits. The control inputs shall have configurable
functionality, such as automatically starting an emergency alarm in case of activation by a fire
detector or control of background music volume.

F. The multi-channel interface shall have 16 control relay outputs that can be configured via the
network for various functions, such as fault indication or zone activity indication.

2.8. POWER AMPLIFIER

A. General: The main function of the power amplifier is the amplification of audio signals for the
loudspeakers. It shall be possible to select the output voltage between 100V, 70V or 50V by
changing jumpers. The equipment shall be 19" rack mounting.

B. Input Level: Adjustable with a preset potentiometer on front panel. Illuminated VU meter is
to be mounted on front panel.

C. Output: Fully protected against failure due to mismatch, short circuits, thermal and electrical
overloads, overdrive or eventual transients.

D. Performance: Each power amplifier shall be compact model and shall at least have the
following performance:
1. Output Power: As shown on the Drawings.
2. Effective Frequency Range: 60 Hz to 20 kHz.
3. Input Impedance: 20 kOhm.
4. Output Voltage (load impedance): 100 V (100 ohm), 70 V (50 ohm) and 50 V (25 ohm).
5. Signal/noise Ratio (all controls closed): ≥85 dB (un – weighted).
6. Ambient Temperature: 50 deg. C.
7. Power Supply: 230Volts, 60 Hz.
8. 24V emergency power port.

2.9. LOUDSPEAKERS

A. Ceiling Loudspeaker: dual-cone loudspeaker with an integrated circular metal grille, flush
mounting type. The loudspeaker includes integral spring – loaded ceiling locking clamps and
100 V, 70 V matching transformer. Loudspeaker shall have the following performance.
1. Rated Power: 6 Watts (tapping as shown on drawings).
2. Sound Pressure Level: 90 dB @ 1 W (1 kHz, 1 m).
3. Effective frequency range: 150 Hz to 20000 Hz.
4. Opening Angle (at 1 kHz - -6dB): 180 degrees.
5. Steel fire dome
6. The loudspeaker shall have built-in protection to ensure that, in the event of a fire,
damage to the loudspeaker does not result in failure of the circuit to which it is connected.
7. The loudspeaker shall have a ceramic terminal block, thermal fuse and heat resistant,
high-temperature wiring.

B. Ceiling Loudspeaker: with special treated paper cone, IPx4 water protected from the front and
to be applied in humidity environments for example Toilets and wet areas., flush mounting
type. The loudspeaker includes integral spring – loaded ceiling locking clamps and 100 V, 70 V
matching transformer. Loudspeaker shall have the following performance.
1. Rated Power: 6 Watts (tapping as shown on drawings).
2. Sound Pressure Level: 88 dB @ 1 W (1 kHz, 1 m).
3. Effective frequency range: 150 Hz to 20000 Hz.
4. Opening Angle (at 1 kHz - -6dB): 170 degrees.
5. Steel fire dome
6. The loudspeaker shall have built-in protection to ensure that, in the event of a fire,
damage to the loudspeaker does not result in failure of the circuit to which it is connected.
7. The loudspeaker shall have a ceramic terminal block, thermal fuse and heat resistant,
high-temperature wiring.

C. Cabinet loudspeaker, metal, circular for indoor use: it is with an integrated circular metal grille,
surface mounting type. The loudspeaker includes a 100 V, 70 V matching transformer.
Loudspeaker shall have the following performance.
1. Rated Power: 6 Watts (tapping as shown on drawings).
2. Sound Pressure Level: 86 dB @ 1 W (1 kHz, 1 m).
3. Effective frequency range: 150 Hz to 20000 Hz.
4. Opening Angle (at 1 kHz - -6dB): 180 degrees.
5. The loudspeaker shall have built-in protection to ensure that, in the event of a fire,
damage to the loudspeaker does not result in failure of the circuit to which it is connected.
6. The loudspeaker shall have a ceramic terminal block, thermal fuse and heat resistant,
high-temperature wiring.

D. Cabinet loudspeaker with Robust metal enclosure for indoor technical areas use, it is with an
integrated metal grille, surface mounting type. The loudspeaker includes a 100 V, 70 V
matching transformer. Loudspeaker shall have the following performance.
1. Rated Power: 6 Watts (tapping as shown on drawings).
2. Sound Pressure Level: 94 dB @ 1 W (1 kHz, 1 m).
3. Effective frequency range: 150 Hz to 20000 Hz.
4. Opening Angle (at 1 kHz - -6dB): 120 degrees.
5. The loudspeaker shall have built-in protection to ensure that, in the event of a fire,
damage to the loudspeaker does not result in failure of the circuit to which it is connected.
6. The loudspeaker shall have a ceramic terminal block, thermal fuse and heat resistant,
high-temperature wiring.

E. Sound projector Loudspeaker: Wall / Column mounting, Water and dust protected to IP 66
and including 100 V, 70 V matching transformer. Loudspeaker shall have the following
performance:

1. Rated Power: 20Watts (tapping as shown on drawings).


2. Sound Pressure Level (SPL): 94 dB @ 1 W (1kHz, 1 m).
3. Effective frequency range: 170 Hz to 20000 Hz.
4. Opening Angle (at 1 kHz - -6dB) Horizontal / Vertical: 224 degrees / 56 degrees.
5. Constructed from extruded aluminum and finished as per Architect / Landscape designer
request. The front-grill, rear cover and bracket to be made from aluminum to increase
corrosion resistance.
6. The loudspeaker shall have a ceramic terminal block, thermal fuse and heat resistant,
high-temperature wiring.

2.10. PUBLIC ADDRESS SYSTEM CABLING

A. Conduits and Raceways: Comply with Division 26 Section "Raceways and Boxes" of the
Specification.

B. Network Cables: designed for interconnecting equipment in a redundant loop network or in a


daisy chain network, able to transport multiple audio channels and control data in digital
format. The network cables shall be hybrid cables, consisting of four (6) fiber cores for data
communication with redundant loop capabilities and two copper conductors for power supply
to connected equipment.

C. Similar to Fire Alarms two hours fire resistant.

D. Microphone Cable: PE insulated, finely stranded tinned copper conductor, with copper braid
screen and PVC over-sheaths.

2.11. SYSTEM INTERFACING

A. The Public Address System shall not act as a standalone system; it must be integrated and
interfaced to the following systems:
1. Fire Alarm system via dry contacts, in order to override regular P.A. messages upon an
emergency situation transmitted by the fire alarm system, and to allow broadcasting
emergency evacuation messages if needed.
2. Building Management System: The interface with the Building Management System shall
provide the following information:
a. Main System ON,
b. Main System OFF,
c. Main System in Default.

PART 3. EXECUTION

3.1. INSTALLATION

A. General: Equipment installation on site is to be limited to the layout and fixation, and inter-
wiring of various items of the ready-made equipment. Acceptance of works is to be restricted
to the equipment and installations complying with the approved submittal, approved shop
drawings, and the agreement of Engineer.

B. Co-ordination with other Works: Undertake the proper co-ordination between the works and
installations of all other associated systems. The layout shop-drawings is to also reveal the
measures taken therein, and every fixation principle, and is to be subject to the approval of
Engineer.

C. Layout of Equipment: The central switching is to be laid out properly in a communication -


equipment room so as to reserve relevant space for maintenance activities as is to as any
future expansion of the system. All other equipment is to be laid out as per the approved shop
drawings. After the proper layout of all equipment is accomplished, all components are to be
labeled, and marked according to an approved labeling designations and materials.

D. Install equipment to comply with manufacturer's written instructions.

E. Wiring Method: Install wiring in raceway. Conceal cable and raceway except in unfinished
spaces.

F. Splices, Taps, and Terminations: Make splices, taps, and terminations on numbered terminal
strips in junction, pull, and outlet boxes; terminal cabinets; and equipment enclosures.

G. Match input and output impedance and signal levels at signal interfaces. Provide matching
networks where required.

H. Identification of Conductors and Cables: Color-code conductors and apply wire and cable
marking tape to designate wires and cables to identify media in coordination with system
wiring diagrams.

I. Wiring of speakers shall be fire resistant type and shall be sized based on calculation.

J. Wall-Mounting Outlets: Flush mounted.

K. Floor-Mounting Outlets: Conceal in floor and install cable nozzles through outlet covers.
Secure outlet covers in place. Trim with carpet in carpeted areas.

L. Weatherproof Equipment: Install units that are mounted outdoors, in damp locations, or
where exposed to weather consistent with requirements of weatherproof rating.

M. Line Matching Transformer Connections: Make initial connections using tap settings indicated
on Drawings.

3.2. GROUNDING

A. Ground cable shields and equipment to eliminate shock hazard and to minimize ground loops,
common-mode returns, noise pickup, cross talk, and other impairments.

3.3. TESTING

A. Manufacturer's Field Service: Engage a factory-authorized service representative to inspect


field-assembled components and equipment installations, including connections. Report
results in writing.

B. Operational Test: Perform tests that include originating program and page material at
microphone outlets, preamplifier program inputs, and other inputs. Verify proper routing and
volume levels and freedom from noise and distortion.

C. Signal-to-Noise Ratio Test: Measure the ratio of signal to noise of complete system at normal
gain settings, using the following procedure:
1. Disconnect a microphone at the connector or jack closest to it and replace it in the circuit
with a signal generator using a 1000-Hz signal. Replace all other microphones at
corresponding connectors with dummy loads, each equal in impedance to microphone it
replaces. Measure the ratio of signal to noise.
2. Repeat test for each separately controlled zone of loudspeakers.
3. Minimum acceptance ratio is 50 dB.

D. Distortion Test: Measure distortion at normal gain settings and rated power. Feed signals at
frequencies of 50, 200, 400, 1000, 3000, 8000, and 12,000 Hz into each preamplifier channel.
For each frequency, measure the distortion in the paging and all-call amplifier outputs.
Maximum acceptable distortion at any frequency is 3 percent total harmonics.

E. Acoustic Coverage Test: Feed pink noise into system using octaves centered at 500 and 4000
Hz. Use a sound-level meter with octave-band filters to measure level at five locations in each
zone. For spaces with seated audiences, maximum permissible variation in level is plus or
minus 2 dB. In addition, the levels between locations in the same zone and between locations
in adjacent zones must not vary more than plus or minus 3 dB.

F. Power Output Test: Measure electrical power output of each power amplifier at normal gain
setting at 50, 1000, and 12,000 Hz. Maximum variation in power output at these frequencies
must not exceed plus or minus 1 dB.

G. Signal Ground Test: Measure and report ground resistance at pubic address equipment signal
ground.

H. Re-testing: Correct deficiencies, revising tap settings of speaker-line matching transformers


where necessary to optimize volume and uniformity of sound levels, and retest. Prepare
written record tests.

I. Inspection: Verify that units and controls are properly labeled and interconnecting wires and
terminals are identified. Prepare a list of final tap settings of paging speaker-line-matching
transformers.

J. Schedule tests with at least seven days' advance notice of test performance.

3.4. OCCUPANCY ADJUSTMENTS

A. On-Site Assistance: Engage a factory-authorized service representative to provide on-site


assistance in adjusting sound levels, resetting transformer taps, and adjusting controls to meet
occupancy conditions. Provide up to three on-site assistance visits within one year of
Substantial Completion.

3.5. DEMONSTRATION

A. Engage a factory-authorized service representative to train Owner's maintenance personnel


to adjust, operate, and maintain the public address system and equipment.
