INTRODUCTION
DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
The cab-end power take off (PTO) enables engine
power to be transferred directly to mounted or trailed
equipment via a splined shaft at the cab-end of the
tractor. The PTO guard (1) and PTO shaft cover (2)
protect the PTO shaft at the cab-end of the tractor.
31-4
SECTION 31 – POWER TAKE-OFF – CHAPTER 1
DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
CAUTION
Never install a PTO clutch/valve assembly that
contains low-pressure and lubrication-circuit
regulating valves. To determine the correct PTO 3
clutch and valve assembly, look for split pins at
A and B on the valve body, 3. If split pins are
present, do not install the assembly.

When the cab-end PTO is not selected, low pressure
oil is directed to the right hand end of the control valve
spool (9) This moves the control valve spool to the left
and opens the clutch pressure galley to the reservoir.

Clutch Pressure Apply Line
The clutch apply pressure line (1) comes from the low
pressure manifold (2) on top of the splitter box. The
manifold supplies 280 PSI at all times.
This line goes to the left side of the rear axle. A tube
inside the axle transfers the oil from the pressure line
to the PTO clutch inside.

Lubrication
Lubrication for the cab-end PTO is supplied by the
orifice (1) in the bottom of the rear axle center
housing. The center housing is a large hydraulic oil
reservoir, supplying lubrication and hydraulic oil to 1
most of the hydraulic components.
10011581
7
Breather
The breather (1) for the PTO case and entire cab-end
axle is on top of the center housing toward the rear
of the top cover. The rear axle is a large oil reservoir 1
that supplies most of the hydraulic components on
the tractor.

SECTION 31 – POWER TAKE-OFF – CHAPTER 1
PRELIMINARY PROCEDURES
1. Drive the tractor onto a level and smooth work
area. The work area, and surrounding floor area,
should be free of any grease, oil or moisture. 1
2. Put all drive controls in neutral and set the
parking brake. Shut the engine down and remove
the key from the key switch.
3. Securely block the engine-end tires front and
rear to prevent rolling.
4. Insert the articulation lock pin (1) in the top
articulating frames. Slightly steer left or right as MA03D027
required until the pin easily drops into the holes.
10
5. If it is necessary to jack the tractor to put it on
blocks, stabilize the engine-end axle to prevent
pivoting. Wedge a tapered wood block (1)
between the engine-end axle and the frame on
each side as shown. 1
DANGER
Do not remove the cab-end axle unless the wood
wedge blocks are securely in place. If these
blocks are not wedged in place, the engine could
pivot on the engine-end axle when the cab-end is
lifted. If this happens, the frames could suddenly
shift and fall off the jacks or lifting equipment.

12. If the PTO brake band requires replacement,
soak the band in rear axle oil for at least 3
minutes before installation. Use the following
procedure to adjust the brake band after
disassembly or replacement.
a. Slacken the locknut (1).
b. Screw in the adjuster (2) to tighten the brake
band until the torque required to turn the
screw reaches 1.0 - 1.2 N⋅m (9 - 11 in.-lbs.).
c. Loosen the adjuster screw 2.5 turns then
tighten the locknut.
d. Check brake band concentricity by holding
the assembled clutch as it would be
positioned when installed. 45
e. Hold the control valve housing at the
3-o’clock position, then, while holding the
clutch housing, release the control valve
housing. The control valve housing should
fall to the 6-o’clock position under its own
weight.
f. Lightly hammer the brake band to shape if
required then repeat Steps “d” and “e”.
INSTALLATION
1
1. Loosen the hydraulic drain tube banjo bolt (1) 3 2
completely. Loosen the setscrew (2) and back off
the adjuster pin several turns. Back the support
pin (3) out of the case.
MT04A002
46
2. Check that the plastic insert (1) is not damaged
and not sticking out more than 6 mm (0.25 inch)
into the housing. The insert is a very tight fit in the
hydraulic tube and PTO clutch -- be careful not to
damage the tube when installing the clutch.
3. The middle adjustment pin (2) is an additional
support point for the clutch, but is not for brake
adjustment. Turn the pin so it sticks partially into
the case as shown.
4. Back the thick support pin (3) out of the housing 3 2
completely until the clutch is installed.

carefully until it engages the clutch housing.
Tighten the setscrew. Carefully install the banjo
bolt (3) while making sure the plastic transfer
tube does not become damaged entering the
clutch housing.

Drive Gear End Float Adjustment
1. With the PTO drive shaft removed, install the
drive gear and bearing assembly into the
housing.
2. Install approximately 2.0 mm (0.080 inch) of
shims behind the rear bearing cup. DO NOT
install an O ring seal.
3. Install the bearing retainer (1) and tighten the
bolts just enough to make sure the bearings are
seated.
4. Measure the gap at the points shown and
average the readings. (Measure the gap at 4
points, add the readings, then divide by 4 to get
the average.)
5. Use the following example to calculate the shim
thickness required to reach 0.10 mm (0.004 inch)
end float. This example assumes that, with 2.0
mm (0.080 inch) of shims, there is an average
gap of 0.36 mm (0.014 inch), which means a
required shim thickness of 1.57 mm (0.062 inch).

Drive Gear End Float Adjustment
1. With the PTO drive shaft removed, install the
drive gear and bearing assembly into the
housing.
2. Install approximately 2.0 mm (0.080″) of shims
behind the rear bearing cup. DO NOT install an
O ring seal.
Shims installed: 2.03 mm

INTRODUCTION
ENGINE-END PTO
This section is organized as follows, including a table
of contents and an index.
• Specifications, contains all the specifications
necessary to repair and restore the engine-end
PTO.
• Special Tools, lists each special tool, along with
its part number, if it can be ordered from OTC, or
a dimensioned drawing, if the tool can be locally
manufactured.
• Introduction, contains a brief description of the in-
formation contained in this section along with an
overview of the engine-end PTO.
• Description of Operation, contains a description
of how the engine-end PTO and each of their
components operate.
• Troubleshooting, contains all the charts and test
procedures necessary to quickly locate faults in
the engine-end PTO.
• Disassembly and Repair, contains the pro-
cedures to remove, repair, and replace each
major PTO component.
DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
The engine-end power take off (PTO) enables
engine power to be transferred directly to mounted or
trailed equipment via a splined shaft at the
engine-end of the tractor. The PTO guard (1) and
PTO shaft cover (2) protect the PTO shaft at the
engine-end of the tractor.

The rotational force for the PTO comes into the
gearbox on the clutch drive shaft (1) The clutch drive
shaft is connected to the engine by chain drive.
The clutch drive shaft splines with the inner hub (2)
which mates with six friction plates (3). When the
clutch is activated and the piston (4) squeezes the
friction plates, force is transmitted to the outside of
the clutch body (5). The clutch body has a gear
surface (6) which mates with the drive gear assembly
