General Laboratory safety
1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory
2. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or
part of a procedure, ASK YOUR LECTURER BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE ACTIVITY.
3. Perform only those experiments authorized by your lecturer. Carefully follow all
instructions, both written and oral. Unauthorized experiments are not allowed.
4. Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the laboratory. Do not use laboratory
glassware as containers for food or beverages.
5. Be prepared for your work in the laboratory. Read all procedures thoroughly before
entering the laboratory. Never fool around in the laboratory. Horseplay, practical jokes, and
pranks are dangerous and prohibited.
6. Always work in a well-ventilated area.
7. Observe good housekeeping practices. Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all
times.
8. Be alert and proceed with caution at all times in the laboratory. Notify the teacher
immediately of any unsafe conditions you observe.
9. Experiments must be personally monitored at all times. Do not wander around the room,
distract other students, startle other students or interfere with the laboratory experiments
of others.
Your personal laboratory safety depends mostly on YOU

Electrical safety
1. Obtain permission before operating any high voltage equipment.
2. Make sure all the connection are correct before on the supply.
3. Avoid using extension cords whenever possible. If you must use one, obtain a heavy- duty
one that is electrically grounded, with its own fuse, and install it safely. Extension cords
should not go under doors, across aisles, be hung from the ceiling, or plugged into other
extension cords.
4. Never, ever modify, attach or otherwise change any high voltage equipment.
5. Always make sure all capacitors are discharged (using a grounded cable with an insulating
handle) before touching high voltage leads or the "inside" of any equipment even after it has
been turned off. Capacitors can hold charge for many hours after the equipment has been
turned off.
6. When you are adjusting any high voltage equipment USE ONLY ONE HAND. Your other hand
is best placed in a pocket or behind your back. This procedure eliminates the possibility of an
accident where high voltage current flows up one arm, through your chest, and down the
other arm.

Emergency Response
1. It is your responsibility to read safety and fire alarm posters and follow the instructions during
an emergency
2. Know the location of the fire extinguisher, eye wash, and safety shower in your lab and know
how to use them.
3. Notify your instructor immediately after any injury, fire or explosion.

4. Know the building evacuation procedures.

1 LEARNING OUTCOMES (LO):

Understand the switching method for double busbar

2 OBJECTIVE

At the end of the experiment, student should be able to:

 Operating a switching with two bus bars and different voltages

 Understand the function of busbar.

3 THEORY

In electrical power distribution, a busbar is a strip or bar of copper, brass or aluminium that
conducts electricity within a switchboard, distribution board, substation, battery bank or other
electrical apparatus. Its main purpose is to conduct electricity, not to function as a structural
member.

In double bus bar system two identical bus bars are used in such a way that any outgoing or
incoming feeder can be taken from any of the bus. Actually every feeder is connected to both
of the buses in parallel through individual isolator as shown in the figure.

When double busbar is repair and maintenance to be carried out on the main bus, the supply will
not interrupted as the entire load can be transfer to spare bus. If fault occurs on the bus bar , the
continuity of supply can be maintained by transferring it to other bus bar. Double bus bar
arrangement increases the flexibility of system.

4 EQUIPMENT / TOOLS

 1DL2108TAL Three-phase power supply

 2DL2108T02 Power circuit breaker
 1DL2108T02/4 Busbar with 2/4 disconnectors
 1DL1080TT Three-phase transformer
 2DL7901TT Overhead line model
 2DL2109T2A5 Moving-iron ammeter (2.5 A)
 2DL2109T1PV Moving-iron voltmeter (600V)

5 PROCEDURE
1. Assemble the circuit in according with the foregoing topographic diagram. Special care must
be taken to ensure that the individual phase are connected correctly in order to avoid later
short-circuits.
2. In order to fully utilize the possibilities of the double busbar system, the busbar should be
supplied from two different voltages: the voltages at the beginning of the overhead line
(busbar 1) and the voltage at the end of the line model( busbar 2)
3. Set primary side of the three-phase transformer in delta connection 380Vand set the
secondary side to star UN−15%.
4. Insert all plugs connecting the capacitance to the line model.
5. Initially switch on the main supply in order to supply the three-phase transformer and the
line model.
6. The switching sequence of the two power circuit breakers (K1,K2) and of the two
disconnectors (Q1.Q2 ) in order to connect the busbar.

NOTE :The disconnectors are interlocked with the related power circuit breakers and the faulty
switching sequence is not allowed : in this case warning signal is produced.

6 RESULT
A. Switching sequence in order to connect the busbar 1 is :

i. Initially activate the disconnectors Q1

ii. Then activate the power circuit breaker K1.
Measure the busbar voltage :

U1= ……… V U2= …….. V

Switching sequence in order to disconnect the busbar 1 is;

iii. Initially switch off the power circuit breakers, K1

iv. Then switch off the disconnector Q1
Which of the two busbar has the higher voltage ?

…………………………………………………………………….

Why ?

………………………………………………….

B. Switching sequence in order to connect the busbar 2 is:

i. Initially activate the disconnectors Q2

ii. Then activate the power circuit breaker K2.
Measure the busbarvoltage:
U1= ……… V U2= …….. V

Switching sequence in order to disconnect the busbar 2 is ;

iii. Initially switch of the power circuit breakers, K2

iv. Then switch off the disconnector Q2

7 DISCUSSION

Which of the two busbar has the higher voltage ?

…………………………………………………………………….

Why ?

………………………………………………….
