MAJOR TEST NO.1_2023

Question 1
1.1 Mention and discuss the modes of operation of a synchronous machine [6]
1.2 A 3-phase star connected synchronous motor of 2100 V, is operating at 0.7 power factor
leading with a line current of 210 A. The motor has a resistance 0.4 Ω/phase and a
synchronous reactance of 3.2 Ω/phase. Determine the value of the generated e.m.f per phase.
[5]
1.3. A 1.54 MW ,50 Hz, 3-phase star connected, 14kV Synchronous motor is operating at the
efficiency of 95%, with impedance of (3.2+j32.5) Ω/phase. The field current is adjusted so that
the motor takes a leading current of 87 A. Calculate
1.3.1. The power factor of the motor. [3]
1.3.2. The excitation emf. [2]
1.3.3. The mechanical power developed. [4]

Question 2
2.1. A 1100V, 50Hz, delta connected induction motor has a star connected slip-ring rotor with
a stator to rotor ratio of 3.8. The rotor resistance and standstill leakage reactance are 0.012Ω
and 0.25Ω per phase, respectively. Neglecting stator impedance and magnetizing current,
determine:
2.1.1. The rotor current at start with slip-ring shorted (4)
2.1.2. The rotor power factor at start with slip-rings shorted (2)
2.1.3. The rotor current at 4% slip with slip-rings shorted (4)
2.1.4. The external rotor resistance per phase required to obtain a starting current of 100 A in
the stator supply lines. (5)

2.2. A 3-phase star connected induction motor, operating on 50 Hz supply with 270 V between
lines, has a 4-pole, stator winding. The motor resistance and standstill reactance per phase
are 0.25Ω and 0.8 Ω respectively. Calculate
2.2.1. The total torque at 10 %. [8]
2.2.2. The maximum torque. [5]
2.2.3. The speed of the maximum torque if the ratio of the rotor to stator turns is 0.75 whilst
neglecting stator impedance. [2]
