Application of SPV

The document describes the specifications and applications of photovoltaic modules. It provides details on the size, number of cells, power output, and efficiency of c-Si PV modules. It then lists applications of solar PV such as pumping water for irrigation and drinking, electrifying remote villages, street/home lighting, and powering communications. The document also presents two sample problems - estimating the water discharge rate from a PV water pumping system, and calculating the number of PV modules and batteries needed to power a home for 4 hours per day.

Prob.1 SPV for water lifting

• PO from array = Solar flux x total cell area

x conversion efficiency
= 945 x (24 x 0.125 x 0.125 x 36) x 0.125
= 1594.7 W
Power available for lifting water = 1594.7 x
0.85 x 0.45 = 610.0 W
Water discharge rate = 0.0013005 m3/s =
4682 lt/hr

• 400 W for 4 hrs daily
• Using PV array + battery + inverter
• System over design for 2 nights
• Calculate no. of PV modules and batteries
• Solar radiation available for 6 hrs daily
• Average hourly global radiation 650 W/m2
• Battery ratings 12 V, 120 Ah, DOD = 0.7,
charging-discharging efficiency = 0.9
• Inverter efficiency = 0.85

Schematic view of Prob.2

400 W
4 hrs at
night

M batteries Inverter
12 V, 120 Ah each Eff. 85%
PV Array Eff. 90% CH & DCH
N modules DOD = 0.7
Eff. 10%
Area = 1.191 x 0.533 m2

2/11/2010 A.K.Panchal, EED, SVNIT, Surat 7

Calculation of Prob.2
Energy needed for 2 nights at load point
= 400 x 4 x 2 = 3200 Wh

Assuming single crystal module with eff. 12.5% at 1000 W/m2 and 25oC
but, actual radiation 650 W/m2 and higher temp. so eff. of module say, 10%.

Daily output from PV array =

650 x 6 x N x (1.191 x 0.533) x 0.1 = 247.57 N Wh

Net daily output at the load point =

247.57 N x 0.9 x 0.9 x 0.85 = 3200 ( load )
N = 18.77 ~ 19 modules

Energy supplied by one battery to the load =

(12 x 120) x 0.7 x 0.9 x 0.85 = 771.12 Wh

No. of batteries required M =

3200/771.12 = 4.15 ~ 4
