TOPIC 6 ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC FIELDS

Topic 6B Capacitors
[Note: In questions marked with an asterisk (*), marks will be awarded for your ability to
structure your answer logically showing how the points that you make are related or follow on
from each other.]

1 Calculate the charge stored on a capacitor of capacitance 1.2 mF when placed

in a potential difference of 16 V and allowed to charge fully.
A 1.92 mC
B 0.192 mC
C 192 C
D 19.2 mC

Your answer
(1)
(Total for Question 1 = 1 mark)

2 Choose the phrase which best completes the following statement:

The time constant of a capacitor is the time taken for…
A the charge stored by a capacitor to drop to 50% of its original value when
discharging.
B the current flowing from the capacitor to drop to 50% of its original value
when discharging.
C the potential difference across the capacitor to drop to 37% of its original
value when discharging.
D the capacitor to discharge.

3 A capacitor is fully charged, then disconnected from a supply and discharged
through a resistor. An experiment can be performed to determine the resistance
of the resistor if the capacitance of the capacitor is known.

(a) Draw a circuit diagram to show the arrangement of equipment to charge

and discharge the capacitor. Include any other equipment that would be
needed to collect the necessary data to calculate the resistance of the
resistor in your diagram.
(3)

*(b) Describe which measurements would be collected with this equipment and
how they would be used to create a graph to determine the resistance of the
resistor.

4 A large capacitor, charged by a cell, is used to power a strobe light. The
manufacturer records data to determine how the charge stored by the capacitor
depends on the potential difference across it. This information is shown in the
graph.

(a) The strobe must light up in a series of quick flashes. To achieve this it
discharges from 1.4 V to 0.8 V. Calculate the average power output of one
flash if it is illuminated for 0.2 s.

(d) The manufacturer is also investigating the charging capacity of the
capacitor. Complete the graphs below to show the charge, charging current
and potential difference across the capacitor as it is charged up.
