PRE-START CHECKS

STARTING CHECKS
WARNING
Never move the propeller by hand while the ignition is switched on, as it
may result in serious personal injury.
Never try to start the engine by hand.
Before starting the engine the pilot must ensure that the propeller area is
free, and no persons can be endangered
CAUTION
Do not overheat the starter motor. Do not operate the starter motor for
more than 10 seconds. Allow starter motor to cool for 20 seconds after
each attempt. After 6 attempts, let the starter cool for 30 mins.
(b) Flooded Engine (If engine will not start after injection)
N6
4. Mixture - LEAN (Fully Aft)
6. Ignition - START
CAUTION
When operating the canopy, ensure that there are no obstructions in
between the canopy and the mating frame, eg harnesses, clothing etc.
When operating the locking handle, DO NOT apply undue force.
PRE-TAXY CHECKS
1. Fuel - Pump ON, Change to FULLER Tank,
Check fuel pressure in green sector.
2. Throttle - CLOSE
3. Chocks - Signal to Marshaller ‘Chocks Away’
4. Parking Brake - RELEASE
5. Throttle - Power as required to move aircraft forward.
6. Test Brake - Both Pilots, in turn
CAUTION
When taxiing on a poor surface, select the lowest possible RPM to avoid
damage to the propeller from stones or other FOD.
INSTRUMENT CHECKS
1. Turn Rate trend indicator - Trend Left / Right
2. Slip / Skid Bar - Bar Right / Left
3. HSI and Compass - Decreasing / Increasing
4. AHs - Erect
5. Course / Bearing Pointers - Tracking
N8
5. Canopy & Rear Door - Check closed & locked, warning light out
6. MFD - Check on ENGINE Page
7. Engine Instruments - Oil & fuel pressures in green sector.
Oil Temperature 120oF
NOTE: Allow engine to warm-up at 1500
RPM if required. (Until Oil Temp 120oF)
8. Throttle - Set 2000 RPM, parking brakes ‘Holding’
CAUTION
* The lack of an RPM drop suggests a faulty grounding or incorrect
ignition timing. If the RPM drop is excess (>175 RPM), the check is to be
repeated with a leaner mixture (to lean the mixture, retard the mixture
lever till the RPM peaks). Even when running on only one magneto, the
engine should not be unduly rough.
CAUTION
N9
Extended Operations on the ground
N 10
11. Autopilot DISCON - Test (If installed), FD deactivates
12. MFD - Engine Instruments in the Green Sector
- Voltmeter in the Green Sector
13. Circuit Breakers - Check IN
14. Harness - Secured, No Loose Articles
15. Controls - Full & Free Movement
16. Canopy & Rear door - Closed & Locked
17. Captain’s Brief
a. Any emergencies on Runway - ABORT Take-Off
b. Engine Failure After T/O - Carry out EFATO Actions
c. Any In-Flight Emergencies - Refer to FRC
LINE-UP CHECKS
1. Position - On R/W Centreline, nose-wheel straight,
foot brakes APPLY
2. Throttle - Set 1200 RPM
3. Aircon Master - OFF (> 1150 Kg AUW only)

DEPARTURE CHECKS
1. Power - Set 21”/2400 RPM CRUISE
2. Fuel Pump - OFF (On leveling off, if below 5000 feet)
ON if 5000 feet or above
CAUTION
Operations at high altitudes (5000 feet and above) with the Fuel Pump
OFF may cause vapour bubbles, resulting in intermittent low fuel pressure
indications, sometimes followed by high fuel flow indications.
IN-FLIGHT CHECKS
N 12
4. E - Engine : Mixture - RICH / Lean for nav
Propeller - As required
CHT - green sector
Oil T & P - green sector
Voltmeter - green sector
5. R - R/T : “Ops Normal” call as appropriate
N 13
JOINING CHECKS (FIE)
1. F - Fuel : Check contents
Fuel Pump ON

3. E - Engine : Mixture - RICH
Propeller - As required
CHT - green sector
Oil T & P - green sector
Voltmeter - green sector
CAUTION
When reducing power, the change in CHT should not exceed 50oF / min.
This is normally guaranteed by the “self adapting inlet”. An excessive
cooling rate may occur however, when the engine is very hot and the
throttle is reduced abruptly in a fast descent. This will be indicated by a
flashing CHT indication.
