STARTING CHECKS

WARNING
Never move the propeller by hand while the ignition is switched on, as it
may result in serious personal injury.
Never try to start the engine by hand.

Before starting the engine the pilot must ensure that the propeller area is
free, and no persons can be endangered

CAUTION
Do not overheat the starter motor. Do not operate the starter motor for
more than 10 seconds. Allow starter motor to cool for 20 seconds after
each attempt. After 6 attempts, let the starter cool for 30 mins.

Max difference 50 RPM when on L and R
NO Engine Vibration
If Max drop > 175 RPM * Adjust Mixture to the Max RPM, reset
Throttle to 2000 RPM and repeat the
Magnetos Check

CAUTION
* The lack of an RPM drop suggests a faulty grounding or incorrect
ignition timing. If the RPM drop is excess (>175 RPM), the check is to be
repeated with a leaner mixture (to lean the mixture, retard the mixture
lever till the RPM peaks). Even when running on only one magneto, the
engine should not be unduly rough.

10. Propeller - Pull back until a drop of 250 – 500 RPM,

Reset to MAX (Repeat 2 times)
11. Throttle - Close gently
Engine idles smoothly (700-850 RPM)
Reset 1200 RPM

CAUTION

N9
Extended Operations on the ground

Repeat Magnetos Check every 10 minutes when holding on ground.

At high ambient temperatures, fuel vapour lock may occur.

It can be prevented by running the engine at 1800 RPM or more.
This results in lower fuel temperatures.

Fuel vapour lock is indicated by the following symptoms:

 Arbitrary changes in idle RPM and fuel flow

 Slow reaction of the engine to operation of throttle
 Engine will not run with throttle in IDLE position

To remedy a fuel vapour lock situation, carry out the following:

1. Set Throttle to 2000 RPM for 1 -2 minutes

(Ensure Oil temp & CHT within limits)
2. Set Throttle to IDLE to confirm smooth running
3. Set Throttle to 1200 RPM
4. Adjust Mixture to attain maximum RPM
5. Immediately before take-off run, set Mixture FULLY RICH
6. Apply FULL Throttle and hold for 10 secs before rolling
