(Reading Activity) Yes ma’am!

Class, I will read the story of the Last Leaf by

O. Henry. (The teacher will do creative
reading of the story the Last Leaf by O.
Henry)
Are you ready to listen?

This beautifully inspirational tale

deals with unselfish sacrifice - how one
man was prepared to sacrifice his own
well-being and used his talent to save the
life of another.

There were two artists, named

Johnsy and Sue who live in different
places and met at New York for a living.
They share an apartment in an artists'
community which was invaded by a
malicious disease which is pneumonia
that spreads its deadly influence, mowing
down many members in this struggling but
auspicious society. Johnsy was infected
and became weak and soon gives up
hope for survival, she said “I’m getting
weaker and weaker, I must go now.” As
she looked at the window in their room
and saw the leaves of the vine falling, she
realized something and said, “When the
last leaf of that vine falls, I must go too.”
Her friend Sue was a bit annoyed
because of what Johnsy said, “No! Are
you out of your mind? Why would you rely
on the leaves on that vine?”

The next day, the physician informs

Sue about Johnsy's chance for survival is
limited unless she has something to hope
for. “Sue, if you can do your best, you
encourage your friend to do what she
wanted.” the doctor said. And Sue
answered, “She wanted to paint the Bay
of Naples.” That day, Sue decided to
inform Mr. Behrman, an old fellow artist,
who lives at the first floor of the building,
about the condition of Johnsy, “Mr.
Berhman! Mr. Berhman!”. “Oh Sue! What
brings you here?” the old man answered.
“Johnsy is getting weaker and weaker and
she said that as the last leaf on the vine
falls she will also die.” Sue explained. “Oh
that girl, why would she like to die at her
young agree?”

That night, a strong storm came.

The next morning, Johnsy sees the last
remaining leaf was still clinging to its life.
Johnsy started to have hope and ask Sue
to prepare her soup she will watch her
while cooking. “Oh! The last leaf survived!
I think it has a purpose! From now on, I
will be strong just like that leaf! From what
she saw, she decided to continue living
and there must be a reason that the leaf
has refused to die, and it is a sin to want
to die. Johnsy recovers from her illness
little by little

One day, “Oh my Dear Lord! I have

something important to tell you!” Sue said
in a shocked manner. “Mr. Berhman died
because of pneumonia, and the medics
had found a burning lamp, a ladder and
a palette containing a mixture of colours
similar to that of a leaf, next to his
completely wet, collapsed body. He had
contracted pneumonia and expired due to
his frail condition.”

It becomes pertinently clear that Mr

Yes ma’am!
Behrman had finally painted his long-
promised masterpiece - the leaf which
saved Johnsy's life, sacrificing his in the
process.
