Ecological Relationships
Learning Objective
Sub-tasks:
1. Describe the different ecological relationships that exists in an
ecosystem, and
2. Describe how organisms interact with each other and their
environment.
3. Value the importance of these ecological relationship for a balance
ecosystem.
Time Allotment: 2 hours
Key Concepts
Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with each other and their
environment.
All living and nonliving things in an environment are interconnected.
A community of organisms and their nonliving environment in a given area
constitutes an ecosystem.
A food chain represents a series events in which food and energy are
transferred from one organism to another in an ecosystem.
Producers make their own food and serve as the first source of food in the
food chain.
Consumers cannot make their own food. They must feed directly or indirectly
on producers.
Decomposers break down dead organisms into simpler substances. In the
process, they return important materials to the soil and water.
Energy moves through ecosystems in food chains, passing from producers, to
herbivores (consumers), and to carnivores (consumers).
There are three types of interaction: predation, competition, and symbiosis.
Predation is the interaction between two organisms, predator (organism that
feeds) and prey (organism that is fed upon).
Competition is an interaction between organisms or species towards a limited
supply of resources in which both the organisms or species are harmed.
Symbiosis enables species to coexists with each other. There are three types
of symbiotic relationships: mutualism (both benefit), parasitism (one benefits
while the other is injured), and commensalism (one benefits while other is
unaffected).

Ecosystems are sometimes thrown completely out of balance by natural
disasters or by human activities.

Reflection
Directions:
1. In this activity you need to look or draw a picture that shows different
ecological relationships in ecosystem using the listed materials below.
pictures/old magazine, scissors, glue, pencil, & paper
2. Cut the picture and paste it its corresponding box.
3. Write the name of organisms involved on the blank.
