Science 7 Q4 Week 1

This module discusses locating places on Earth using a coordinate system of latitude and longitude. It introduces key concepts like lines of latitude which run east to west and divide the Earth into northern and southern hemispheres. Lines of longitude run north to south and divide the Earth into eastern and western hemispheres. The module provides activities to help learners identify parts of the globe and understand how to read and write coordinates to specify locations. Learners are expected to demonstrate how to locate places using coordinates and describe the location of the Philippines in terms of surrounding land and water.

Most Essential Learning Competency

Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a coordinate

system (S7ES-IVa-1)

To the Learners

This module was designed to help you learn the important concepts
independently at your own pace and time. To achieve the objectives of
this module, read and follow the simple reminders as your guide.
1. Find a comfortable area in your home so you can focus on your studies.

your notebook.
5. You may ask assistance from your parents or guardian to guide you in
doing the activities.
6. Most importantly, have fun while learning.
Expectations
After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify and describe the imaginary lines on the globe/map used in

locating places;
2. demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a coordinate
system;
3. describe the location of the Philippines using latitude and longitude and
identify the major bodies of water and landmasses surrounding it; and
4. infer the importance of the location of Philippines with respect to the
continents and oceans of the world.

Looking Back
In grade 6, you have discussed weather and climate. Let us find out if you still
recall the important concepts in this topic.

4. condition of the atmosphere in a particular day
5. long-term weather patterns in an area

Brief Introduction
Philippines is a very rich country when it comes to natural resources and
biodiversity. The rich minerals found here are mostly a result of volcanic
activities and its position along the Ring of Fire, while the diverse array of plants
and animals is greatly related to its tropical climate- a type of climate experienced
by countries near the equator. Therefore, the wealth of the Philippines could be
accounted to its location on earth. The characteristic of its environment is
dependent to where it is positioned on the globe. If you want to know more about
the Philippine environment, don’t miss out the succeeding modules, but in the
meantime let us find out first where the country is located exactly on earth.

Where are you? To answer this question, it is common to specify the name
of the street, city or the exact address and the landmarks nearby. Where is the

3
Philippines? One may answer this using the Coordinate System or the set of
degrees of latitude and longitude to describe a location on the earth’s surface.
What are these latitude and longitude?

Latitudes are imaginary horizontal lines Northern

North Pole
that run from east to west around the globe. 900 N
hemisphere

The reference point for latitudes is the equator. Arctic Circle 66.50 N
Equator, which is at 00 (zero degree) latitude,
divides the earth into two hemispheres: Tropic of Cancer 23.50 N
northern hemisphere and southern Equator 00
hemisphere. The lines of latitude are also Tropic of Capricorn 23.50 S
known as parallels of latitude because these
lines are parallel to the equator and to each Antarctic Circle 66.50 S
other. Five lines of latitude have special names Southern 900 S
South Pole
namely: Equator (00), Tropic of Cancer (23.50 N), hemisphere

1800 Longitudes are imaginary vertical lines

1500 E
1200 E that run from the North Pole to the South Pole.
The starting point of longitude is the Prime
900 W
Meridian. Prime meridian is at longitude 00 at
900 E
Greenwich, England. Lines of longitude are often
Western Eastern
hemisphere hemisphere referred to as meridians. Meridians are important
600 W for setting time zones. There are 24 lines of
600 E
longitude, 12 for western hemisphere and 12 for
300 W 300 E

eastern hemisphere.

ACTIVITY 2 – Where our Lines Meet

Locating places using coordinates of latitude and longitude

1. Know the coordinates. Latitude is given first followed by longitude.

2. If the direction of the latitude is north, find the degrees of the given latitude
above the equator. If it is south, find the degrees of the latitude below the
equator.
3. If the direction of the longitude is east, find the degrees of the given
longitude to the right of the prime meridian. If it is west, find the degrees
of the longitude to the left the prime meridian.
4. Wherever the degrees of latitude and longitude intersect or meet, that is
where the place is located.

A. Directions: Determine what country or place is located on the following

approximate coordinates. The first one is given as an example.

ACTIVITY 3 – The Search is Over

Another way of describing the location of a certain place is by identifying the
different landmasses and bodies of water surrounding it. Landmass is a very
large region or area of land such as a continent. A body of water is any part of
the land that is covered with water such as lake, river, sea and ocean.

Directions: Refer to the map to answer the following questions.

5. Which bodies of water are located at the east of the country?

2
6. Why is the Philippines called an archipelago?
7. If you will be asked where is the Philippines located, how will you describe
it with respect to the different bodies of water and landmasses surrounding
it?

Remember
Coordinate System is a set of degrees of latitude and longitude to describe a
location on the earth’s surface.

Latitudes are imaginary horizontal lines that run from east to west around the
globe.

Equator, which is at 00 (zero degree) latitude, divides the earth into two
hemispheres: northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere.

Longitudes are imaginary vertical lines that run from the North Pole to the South
Pole.

Prime meridian, which is at longitude 00, divides the earth into eastern and
western hemisphere.

Landmass is a very large region or area of land such as a continent.

A body of water is any part of the land that is covered with water such as lake,
river, sea and ocean.

To explain the characteristics of a certain country or place, it is helpful to

know where it is located. There are two ways to describe the location of a place
on earth: (1) using the coordinates of latitude and longitude and (2) identifying the
landmasses and bodies of water surrounding it.

2
Check your Understanding
At this point, you can say that you really know where the Philippines is
located. What then is the importance of knowing where the Philippines is?

Directions: Complete the following sentences by filling in the correct term/word

from the choices found in the box below.

(1)
The Philippines is located at approximately 130N latitude and __________
(2)
longitude. It is situated between the equator and the Tropic of ___________. With
(3)
its location on the globe, the climate here is known as _________, which is
(4)
characterized by relatively high ____________, high humidity and abundant
rainfall. This type of climate supports a variety of plants and animals.
(5)
The Philippines is also positioned at the Southeastern part of ___________
(6)
continent. It is called an ______________ because it is composed of many islands
(7)
and surrounded by big bodies of water such as __________________ and Philippine
(8)
Sea to the east, Celebes Sea at the south and the ___________ to the west, where

surrounding environment not only support the growth of diverse species for food
but are also used for other economic activities. The country’s strategic location
gives easy access from other Asian countries. It also serves as usual stopover for
cross-Pacific flights as well provides several essential sea routes for
