CHEM140.1
Exercise No. 8
Determination of Acetic Acid in Vinegar
I. Introduction
Acetic acid is a carboxylic acid that is an organic compound. Vinegar is one of the
products that contain roughly 5-20 percent acetic acid. Acetic acid is the main component
of vinegar, and federal rules require at least 4g of acetic acid per 100mL of vinegar. By
titrating an appropriate sample of commercial vinegar with a standardized sodium
hydroxide solution, the acetic acid (CH3COOH) concentration in the vinegar may be
easily evaluated. Titrate the acetic acid with the standard base to a pale pink equivalency
point using three drops of phenolphthalein indicator. The grams of acetic acid in the
vinegar sample may be estimated by multiplying the moles of acetic acid by the
molecular weight of acetic acid (MW). The main goal of this experiment is to find out
how much acid is present in commercially available vinegar.
Objectives
1. To determine the total quantity of acid present in commercially available vinegar.
II. Materials
• Commercial vinegar • Standard NaOH
• Buret • Erlenmeyer flask
• Phenolphthalein • Pipet
• Wash bottle • Distilled water • Dropper
III. Methodology
Schematic Diagram
The 25 mL of vinegar was pipetted A 50 mL aliquot of this solution
into a 250-mL volumetric flask, and was pipetted into an Erlenmeyer
was diluted to the mark and mixed flask and 50 mL of water and
thoroughly two drops of phenolphthalein
indicator was added, and it was
then titrated with a standard
base to the first permanent pink
color.
The titration was repeated on
two additional aliquots.
Calculation:
(𝑚𝐿 𝑜𝑓 𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻 𝑎𝑑𝑑𝑒𝑑)(𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻)
% 𝑜𝑓 𝐴𝑐𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑐 𝐴𝑐𝑖𝑑 = 𝑥 100
(𝑚𝐿 𝑜𝑓 𝑉𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑟 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒)
V. Discussions
Vinegar is a common household item that contains both acetic acid and other
compounds. By titrating a sample of vinegar with a standard solution of NaOH, the molar
concentration of acetic acid in the sample can be determined. The reactions that occurred
during the experiment were neutralization reactions, which meant that at the end of the
experiment, the moles of acid equaled the moles of base. By using this factor to the
formula' moles = concentrations x volume,' the molar concentration of acetic acid was
calculated. Moreover, in determining the concentration of acetic acid in vinegar, a
titration curve was created that revealed the equivalency point.
VI. Conclusion
In conclusion, this experiment found the molar concentration of acetic acid in vinegar to
be 0.1844mol/L.
