Using the calculator to solve for Differential Calculus Problems

Limits

Example 1:
⎛ 1− cos x ⎞
Evaluate: lim ⎜
x→0 ⎝ sin x ⎟⎠
A. 1 C. 0
B. indeterminate D. -1

Solution:
Note: Calculator set to Radian mode when performing calculus problems.
Convert to RADIAN MODE

Input the function in the calculator

Now, calculate the function to a value of x that approaches to 0 (i.e. 0.00000000001)

Press Calc then input 0.00000000001

And press the equal sign to get the answer.

Calc at x = 0.00000000001
1− cos x
=0
sin x
To check that the limit exists, check the left side that approaches to 0, x = -
0.00000000001.

Calc at x = -0.00000000001.
1− cos x
=0
sin x

Since the value of the function does not change, the limit exists.
! The limit of the function is C. 0.

Example 2:
Simplify the expression:
x 2 − 16
lim
x→4 x − 4

A. 1 C. 0
B. 8 D. does not exist

Input the function

Press Calc and use a value of x that approaches to 4: x = 4.0000001 and x =
3.9999999. If the limit does not change, therefore, the limit exists

Calc at x = 4.0000001.
x 2 − 16
=8
x−4

Calc at x = 3.9999999
x 2 − 16
=8
x−4

Value does not change, the limit of the function is B. 8.

NOTE: If the limit changes its value when calculated by a different value of x, the limit
does not exist.

Differentiation Techniques

When using the calculator, just set the value of x to satisfy the derivative of a function.
The value of x is usually a decimal value like 0.1. But if it does not work, try changing
the value to 0.3 or 0.5. To determine the answer from the choices, just calculate the
chosen value of x from the choices then compare to the derivative of the given function.

Example 1:
Differentiate: y = 3− 2x 2
2x −2x
A. C.
3− 2x 2 3− 2x 2
B. 2x 3− 2x 2 D. −2x 3− 2x 2

Solution:
Derive the given function with a value of x = 0.3

Substitute x = 0.3 to the given choices and check which one will give the same exact
answer

A.

B.

C.

C has the same answer as the value of the derivative.

−2x
Therefore, the answer is C .
3− 2x 2
No need to check for D.

Example 2:
What is the derivative with respect to x of y = ( x + 1) − x 3
3

x +1
A. + 2x 2 C. 3x + 6
3
B. 3( x + 1) + 3x 2 D. 6x + 3

Solution:
Derive using calculator @ x = 0.1.

A.

B.

C.

D.

D has the same value with the derivative.

Therefore, the answer is D 6x +3.

Example 3:
Differentiate: y = sin ( x −1 )
A.
cos ( x −1 ) C. − cos( x )−1
2 x
cos ( x − 1)
B. – sin x cos x D.
2x

Solution:

Derive using calculator @ x = 0.3

A.

Therefore, the answer is A. No need to check for B, C & D.

Example 4:
Find the derivative of y = xx

A. x(ln x) C. xx(1+lnx)
B. – x(lnx) D. – xx(1+lnx)

Solution:
Derive using calculator @ x = 0.1

A.

B.

C.

C has the same answer as the value of the derivative.

Therefore, the answer is C xx(1+lnx).

No need to check for D.

Example 5
( )
2
Differentiate: y = sin −1 4x
8sin −1 4x 2sin −1 4x
A. C.
1− 4x 2 1− 16x 2
8sin −1 4x 4sin −1 4x
B. D.
1− 16x 2 1− 16x 2

Solution:
Derive using calculator @ x = 0.1

B has the same answer as the value of the derivative.

8sin −1 4x
Therefore, the answer is B .
1− 16x 2

Example 6
Find dy/dx if y = 52 x+1
A. 52 x+1 ln 25 (
C. 52 x+1 ln 2x + 1 )
B. 5 2 x+1
ln5 D. 5 2 x+1
ln10

Solution:
Derive using calculator @ x = 0.1

A.

A has the same answer as the value of the derivative.

Therefore, the answer is A 52 x+1 ln 25 .
