WORKSHOP 15 CLIMATE RESPONSIVE ARCHTECTURE OF THAR DESERT
TH TO 21 ST DECEMBER 2021

The workshop focuses on understanding the climate of the place by exploring the most prominent desert region of India,
Thar desert, where nature exist with its extremities. Survival is a challenge and the life systems of such places teach us, how
nature is a resource for the human existence in its true form. It is the best place to understand the eco sensitivity and
response generated by traditional and indigenous architecture. 5 days journey is designed in three phases which initiates
with learning of analytical tools and methods to decode the climate through initial interactive sessions with experts. Further
it cruises towards providing the knowledge of culture and architectural traditions of village settlements in response to
climate. The course has emphasis on documentation of climate response developed at settlement, clusters and house form
level. Second phase of the journey consist of the heritage walk of golden city which is meant to explore the old Havelis
celebrating its architectural legacy since generations. Building elements and intricate details of these traditional buildings
demonstrate the rich knowledge about material handling and indigenous practices which have sustained through the test of
time. The Jaisalmer fort is the finest example of the old living city which was designed for water harvesting systems to
survive in extreme water crisis. With the progress of workshop, all the field explorations shall be periodically discussed and
analyzed on various parameters such as planning, activity pattern, materials and construction techniques etc. Third part of
the workshop is about hands on experience and learning of native construction techniques and material from local masons.
The course concludes with the inferences and study outcomes which shall be shared in form of compiled document.

DAY 2 – JAISALMER HERITAGE
WALK
The Havelis of Jaisalmer are as famous as its might
fortress. Carved in the same yellow sandstone, their Hotel Moustache
intricately carved beauties are a reminiscent of the
prosperous past of the town when it happened to be the
business hub on the Camel caravan route connecting
India to Central Asia. The planning design of these

DAY 3 – JAISALMER FORT &
PALACE MUSEUM Jaisalmer Fort
The Jaisalmer Fort is situated in the city of Jaisalmer, in
the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is believed to be one of Jaisalmer Fort
the very few "living forts" in the world, as nearly one
fourth of the old city's population still resides within the
fort. For the better part of its 800-year history, the fort
was the city of Jaisalmer.

• Visit to Jaisalmer fort and Palace Museum. Jaisalmer Fort Model
• Lunch and proceed for visit to museums (Thar Heritage

core we end our day with a beautiful view sunset at
Gadisar Lake.

DAY 4 – RAJKUMARI RATNAVATI
GIRLS SCHOOL & WORKSHOP
Desert Camp
Rajkumari Ratnavati Girl's School is a girl's school in
the rural thar desert of Jaisalmer in northern India.The Desert Camp
school is unique in that the architects designed it in the
shape of an oval that can withstand temperatures of up
to 50 degrees Celsius.

• Check out from hotel, Breakfast and later proceed for


Desert Camp.
• Hotel Check in freshen up presentation on Rajkumari
Ratnavati school and proceed to visit.
• Return to camp, Lunch at camp and proceed for
workshop.

DAY 5 – VILLAGE LIFE OF THAR
DESERT
Culture
There are two kinds of residential formation of the
people in the desert. One is village and called as
“Gaon” in which various caste, groups and tribes live
together. The other habitation is kind of hamlet called
as “Dhani”. Gaon or Dhani are generally scattered in Houseform
cluster in barren spaces, each of them being a separate
entity. The style of habitation and architecture is well
reflected by their mode of production, spatial
organization, hierarchy, architectural character, use of
material which is in response to extreme desert context.

• Breakfast at camp and interaction and presentation on


Village life of Thar desert.
Art
• Proceed to village visit and settlement study
• Lunch at camp.
• Camel Safari and other fun activities in the sand dunes.
• Evening entertainment with bonfire at Desert camp, Dinner
and stay at desert camp.

DAY 6 – JODHPUR FORT & CLOCK
TOWER
Jodhpur is a city in the Thar Desert of the northwest
Indian state of Rajasthan. Its 15th-century Mehrangarh Jodhpur Fort
Fort is a former palace that’s now a museum,
displaying weapons, paintings and elaborate royal Jodhpur City
palanquins (sedan chairs). Set on a rocky outcrop, the Clock Tower
fort overlooks the walled city, where many buildings
are painted the city’s iconic shade of blue.

• Breakfast at Camp and leave for blue city Jodhpur by


bus.
• Reach Jodhpur, Lunch and proceed for Mehrangarh fort.
• Old city market and clock tower visit.
• Dinner and proceed to Railway station.
• Travel to Nagpur by Train
