Lab 1 - Pharm Info

This document summarizes a student's laboratory activity report on the importance of informatics in pharmacy practice. The activity required the student to submit a synthesis explaining the importance of informatics, provide practical applications of informatics in community and hospital pharmacy settings, and reflect on the importance of informatics. The student explained that health care is rapidly changing and informatics plays a critical role in supporting core pharmacy processes. Informatics can improve medication management through tools like drug utilization review and barcoding. Hospitals commonly use the Linux operating system and PostgreSQL database for their hospital information systems. The future of pharmacy relies on informatics as the roles of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians evolve to incorporate more technology.

LABORATORY ACTIVITY # 1:
IMPORTANCE OF INFORMATICS IN PHARMACY PRACTICE
I. Objectives
To demonstrate appreciation of the importance of informatics in Pharmacy practice.

II. Method/s
Use the internet to source out information relative to activity’s objective.

III. Activity requirements

1. Submit a synthesis of a study that explains the importance of informatics in Pharmacy practice.
- Health care is rapidly changing, as are the roles that pharmacy staff play in providing care. The
use of computers and technology to improve care, known collectively as "informatics," is an
underlying theme in the evolution of health care. Formally, medical informatics is a "field of
information science concerned with the analysis, use, and dissemination of medical data and
information through the application of computers to various aspects of health care and
medicine." Pharmacy informatics is the relationship that exists between pharmacies and
medical computer applications that manage medication information and knowledge in order to
improve the services that are provided. Throughout the clinical knowledge life cycle, pharmacy
informatics plays a critical role in supporting and overseeing the core processes involving
information and knowledge delivery. Knowledge discovery and creation, knowledge
application and delivery, and knowledge asset management are all part of this role. Pharmacy
informaticists use their clinical experience to identify and assess the feasibility of technology-
based solutions, identify gaps, and assess risks in order to support departmental and
organizational initiatives involving medication use and electronic systems.
2. Provide practical applications of informatics in community and hospital pharmacy. You may check
on the operating systems used by community and hospital pharmacy. Give at least 2 for each
practice area.
- Pharmacy informatics can include a variety of medication management aspects, such as a drug
utilization review, the use of barcoding technology during product dispensing, and the
development of alert systems to improve medication prescribing and dispensing. Pharmacists,
pharmacy technicians, physicians, nurses, information technology personnel, and other health
care professionals collaborate extensively in pharmacy informatics. Health information
systems already engage pharmacists and pharmacy technicians across a variety of health care
settings, including e-prescribing, computerized prescriber order entry (CPOE), electronic
medical records (EMRs), electronic health records (EHRs), bar code dispensing and
administration systems (BCMAs), automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), controlled
substance or prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) databases, and immunization
registries. To provide clinical, technical, regulatory, and practical oversight into health
information systems, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are being recruited to fulfill more
technology-driven roles. Specialists working in these roles are referred to as clinical
informatics pharmacists and pharmacy technician informaticists (PTIs).
- A Hospital Operating System (OS) is a Hospital Information System used to manage hospital
operations. It is client-server software, which means that the server acts as a central unit that
stores all of the information, and the clients are the units that feed the information into the
server. The Linux operating system and PostgreSQL as the database are used by Hospital OS
Server.

3. Give a reflection on the importance of informatics in pharmacy practice.

- The definition of medical informatics has evolved over time to encompass many different
aspects of care. When considering the future of pharmacy informatics, it is critical to include
pharmacy technicians in the development of pharmacy roles. As a result, pharmacy
technicians must understand the practical applications of technology at their practice site
today, as well as the integration of pharmacy informatics, the history of how pharmacy
informatics developed, and what their future roles will be based on current pharmacy
informatics trends. Pharmacy technicians should recognize the importance and utility of
technology in their daily activities and look for ways to learn more about the technology
systems that are currently used in their practice. Furthermore, as pharmacist informaticists
continue to define their roles on clinical and technical teams, PTIs will be required to assist
in supporting those pharmacist roles. As a result, it will be critical to encourage national
pharmacy technician organizations, such as PTCB, to create an informatics-focused
certification for pharmacy technicians, with the goal of providing PTIs with the training and
certification they need to succeed in a challenging technology-focused health care
environment.
