CHAPTER 4 LESSON 12

CONTEMPLATE (page 106)

a. When you hear the word, MODERNITY, what image of the world do you see? Illustrate your
vision below.

Modern arts is the new movement and era for art itself which could be the
stage of more diverse and complex styles.

Through modern arts artists challenge the idea that art needs to represent
the world in a practical way, some artists have experimented with the
imaginative use of color, non-traditional materials and new techniques and
media. Among those new media was photography, the invention of which
in 1839 offered revolutionary possibilities to portray and view the world.

b. What were your thoughts as you were drawing your vision?

Modern art includes a wide range of trends, philosophies, and attitudes whose modernism exists in
particular in a tendency to disregard conventional, historical, or academic forms and traditions in an
attempt to produce an art more in line with changed social, cultural, and intellectual conditions.

Modern art is the era of art movement where artist provided more self-expression and break boundaries in
traditional art.

ASSESMENT (page 111)

Write an essay using the following guide questions
1. What are the affordances and pitfalls of viewing the world as divided into global north and
global south.

Global Northern countries are those nations that are economically developed such as the USA, the UK,
Canada, Western European nations and developed parts of Asia; Global Southern countries are those
that are less economically developed such as nations in Africa and some parts of Asia

2. Is the global divided something that you feel is affecting you daily, in your home, or in your
community? Why and how?

your life affected by the digital divide? Rural communities are one of the groups most affected
by this phenomenon, but new technologies and awareness of the issues is helping to close the
gap slowly. In fact, providing internet Is access to people who live in rural communities is a big
step for leveling the playing field, with the power to transform education, income,
communications, healthcare and other basics of life.

3. If you were our country’s leader, what programs or policies will you purpose knowing how the
world economic system goes? Justify your answer.

If it were up to me, I would ensure everything that needed to be done was getting done to defend the
nation from enemies foreign and domestic. All laws designed to catch and prosecute those who commit
crimes by violating other people’s rights (including property rights) are held to account and appropriately
punished.
Next I would begin dismantling the corporate/social welfare state programs that are worse than useless.
No one but bureaucrats benefit by consigning individuals to an effort-free wonderland of stigmatized
indigence. As someone once said: “You can’t help men permanently by doing for them what they can
and should do for themselves.”
And corporate welfare programs are so much plunder underwritten by corrupt politicians doing the
bidding of lobbyists and special interests - all at other people’s expense..
The Depts. of Commerce, Labor and Agriculture, for example, are nothing but clilentele agencies
promoting the respective interests they think they are there to serve.
The Dept. of Education certainly isn’t contributing to the education and welfare of America’s young. It
might be the first to be closed.
That, at least, would be a good start. The aim is to dramatically cut spending to allow for dramatic tax
cuts and so boosting the incentives to invent, innovate, invest, produce and exchange the private-sector
goods people want, need and demand. For the same reason, repealling costly regulations will also be a
priority, if it were up to me.

1. If you were among the upper echelons of the government, what propositions will you offer
to address the disparity between the economically poor and the economically rich.

After a financial crisis, a deep recession, and a stalled recovery, it should be no surprise that poverty in
America is on the rise. This fall, the Census Bureau reported that a record 46 million Americans — 15% of
the population — were living below the poverty line. This is a troubling figure, and it should certainly
move us to act to help the poor as we strive to grow the economy.

But efforts to address poverty in America are frequently derailed by misguided ideology — in particular,
by the notion that poverty is best understood through the lens of inequality. Far too often, policymakers
succumb to the argument that a widening gap between the richest and poorest Americans is the
fundamental problem to be solved and that poverty is merely a symptom of that deeper flaw.

2. Argue: is poverty a form of oppression? Explain your answer.

Poverty can be the result of oppression, but it is not a form of oppression. One must separate
the two ideas logically and linguistically to form a proper idea of what is and is not poverty or
oppression.
Many in, for example, China, are oppressed in principle who are not at all in poverty. One can
look at Afghanistan for another example where people out in the hinterlands are not necessarily
oppressed on account of government action, but are nevertheless in poverty.

Research about the Asian financial cris in 1997/1998. Explore what caused the crisis and how it
happened. Using a mind map, preset the outcomes of your research in a graphical way. Mount your
mind map in the space provided.

The 1997–98 Asian financial crisis began in Thailand and then quickly spread to neighbouring economies. It
began as a currency crisis when Bangkok unpegged the Thai baht from the U.S. dollar, setting off a series of
currency devaluations and massive flights of capital. In the first six months, the value of the Indonesian
rupiah was down by 80 percent, the Thai baht by more than 50 percent, the South Korean won by nearly 50
percent, and the Malaysian ringgit by 45 percent. Collectively, the economies most affected saw a drop in
capital inflows of more than $100 billion in the first year of the crisis. Significant in terms of both its
magnitude and its scope, the Asian financial crisis became a global crisis when it spread to the Russian and
Brazilian economies.

Based on your readings, what are the lessons learned from the Asian financial crisis?
Perhaps the key lesson from the Asian crisis is that weaknesses in the banking and financial sector can
feed into a balance of payments crisis and intensify disruptions in the wider economy. Asian banking
systems, it is now realized, had several sources of vulnerability. Governance structures were weak.

1. Write a poem consolidating all the concepts you learned in this lesson. For example, you
may write about the concept of regionalism and weather you are for or against it.

Regionalism  is a performative discourse. It seeks to achieve legitimacy for definitions of boundaries and
to obtain approval for this definition in cultural and political, and popular and official understandings.
Thus regionalism is concerned with giving meaning to bounded material and symbolic worlds in an effort
to create intersubjective meanings. Regionalism concerns process and story, more than artifact. It is
concerned with emphasizing the moral particularity of a population bounded by territory and with
valorizing regional culture as a mean to create regional identity. Regionalism is frequently linked to
“topophilia,” that is, to the existence of affective bonds between a people and place or setting.
Regionalism as a cultural phenomenon is frequently expressed in art, literature, music, and poetry. The
post-bellum American south has produced a vast literature which reflects and produces cultural life there
most obviously in the works of Mark Twain, Tennessee Williams, Flannery O'Connor, and William
Faulkner. Women disproportionately contributed to regionalist literature in the United States in the 19th
Century as evidenced by the work of Sarah Orne Jewett, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Alice Cary, Sui Sin Far,
Zitkala-Sa, Grace King, and Mary Austin. In contemporary regionalist novels such as those of the
Kentucky writer Wendell Berry, the place—in this case the fictional Port William—becomes a character.

2. Research about south Asian association for regional cooperation (SAAARC). Write an essay
explaining what it is and how essential it is for countries in south asia.

Cooperation in SAARC is based on respect for the five principles of sovereign equality, territorial integrity,
political independence, non-interference in internal affairs of the Member States and mutual benefit.
Regional cooperation is seen as a complement to the bilateral and multilateral relations of SAARC
Member States. SAARC Summits are held annually and the country hosting the Summit holds the Chair of
the Association. Decisions are made on an unanimity basis while bilateral and contentious issues are
excluded from the deliberations of SAARC. In addition to the eight Member States, nine Observer States
join SAARC Summits: China, the US, Myanmar, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Mauritius and the
European Union.

Major Abdul Latif Martelino (later operations officer in the infamous Jabidah massacre) also cited the
vision of President Manuel L. Quezon for an integrated, pan-Malayan nationhood in the region. Quezon
envisioned creating a better state which was united. Having a united race at the time would pave way
for the development of the Malay. The unitedstate would however, be achieved by the contribution of
the people living in the region. Quezon was determined to make his intentions known to the people so

Mendoza, Dean of the Ateneo School of Government, told Rappler on Tuesday, April 25.

2. Write an opinion essay: do you believe that ASEAN integration will lead us to the kind of

ASEAN will also allow you to access products or food or goods not previously available in the country.

because they were imported all the way from the United States. Today, “apples in grocery stores are
cheaper than our own mangoes,” he said, thank to less trade barriers, making the price go down.

The availability of entertainment media, accessible through television, the cinema, and the
internet, has become more prevalent. In recent years, marvel and DC have become more prolific in
producing superhero movies, repackaging content which in the past have only been accessible through
print media or low tech animations.

Superhero Popularity in Past and Present America

The industry of superhero films has ballooned over the past ten years or so, expanding into massive
franchises under the leadership of longtime comic book producers Marvel and D.C. Comics and drawing
larger audiences than ever. I researched the history of superhero popularity in America in order to better
understand why the industry is experiencing such unprecedented success in our current moment.
Specifically, I interrogated the reasons for increased popularity of superheroes during World War II, the
early years of the Cold War, and the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s and ‘70s. I analyzed these historical
periods of superhero popularity, as well as the theories of scholars such as Marc Di Paolo, Laurence
Maslon, and Andreas Rauscher, who attempt to explain this popularity. From this research, I will argue
that the 2000s and 2010s have provided fertile ground for the expansion of the superhero industry due
to a combination of social, political, technological, and marketing factors. While individual context for
each superhero’s story continues to compel audiences in the same way that social and political factors
have always boosted superheroes’ success, modern influences of CGI technology and increased
franchising efforts have allowed superheroes to appeal to broader audiences within the United States
and worldwide.

Watch two or three of these marvel or DC movies. Focus intently on the symbols and messages
(beliefs, values, norms) conveyed by the movie. Research about how the movie was produced. Write

2. Write an essay: with fast-paced interconnectedness of the world through social network

Social media is turning young people into automatons who aren’t taught to think for themselves but
mindlessly follow the group think as determined by the globalists. This is not good for the future of
humanity. When the active pursuit of truth is frowned upon reason is abandoned and knowledge is
canned with the result that the transcendentals - being, truth, goodness, and beauty - are ignored or
forgotten to the detriment of human happiness and freedom.

you have? What are the things you desire about your religious affiliations? Basing from the ealier
discussion in this lesson so far, what are your personal reasons for having such an affiliations?

Nominally, Religious Affiliation is defined as the religious or spiritual beliefs and practices to
which a person adheres or the religious group to which a person belongs.

mathematics, physical sciences, etc. Ask them how compatible or incompatible is religion with their field
of expertise. Encourage them to explain in detail why they think so. Note: Remember to seek for
informed consent from your interviewees. If you are affiliated to a religion, there might be some
principles which your interviewer will share that are not aligned with yours. Keep an open mind and
heart as you conduct the interview, and maintain mutual respect at all times Write your notes in the
space provided.

I am convinced that evolution and religious beliefs need not be in contradiction. Indeed, if
science and religion are properly understood, they cannot be in contradiction because they concern
different matters. Science and religion are like two different windows for looking at the world. The two
windows look at the same world, but they show different aspects of that world. Science concerns the
processes that account for the natural world: how planets move, the composition of matter and the
atmosphere, the origin and adaptations of organisms. Religion concerns the meaning and purpose of the
world and of human life, the proper relation of people to the Creator and to each other, the moral values
that inspire and govern people’s lives. Apparent contradictions only emerge when either the science or
the beliefs, or often both, trespass their own boundaries and wrongfully encroach upon one another’s
subject matter.

Form a group. Interview selected religious and spiritual leaders in your community (a priest, a
pastor, an imam, or a spiritual leader of an indigenous group). Ask them to briefly explain the
foundations of their religion. Further, inquire what they think is the role that religion plays in modern
society. Note: Remember to seek for informed consent from your interviewees. If you are affiliated to a
religion, there might be some principles which your interviewer will share that are not aligned with
yours. Keep an open mind and heart as you conduct the interview, and maintain mutual respect at all
times. Write your interview notes in the space below.

Buddhism was the largest religion in the world before the First World War; however, especially
following the shift in the political system of China and its neighbouring countries, it became the fourth
largest religion after Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. It counts around 520 million followers worldwide.

The word “Buddhism” comes from the word “Buddha”, which in turn comes from the words
“buddhi” and “bodhi”. In the ancient Indian language Pāli and Sanskrit, this word literally means
“intellect”, “intelligence”, “wisdom” or “supreme knowledge”. However, it mostly refers to the
intelligence and supreme knowledge that a Buddha possesses due to the understanding of the  Four
Noble Truths.

1. Using mixed media (music, visua arts, movements? Produce a collage of artwork
summarizing what you learned from this lesson.
2. Write an essay: in the age of globalization, does religion matter and how?

As a contested term, globalization has many definitions, each worthy of merit. Generally, globalization is
first thought of “in economic and political terms, as a movement of capitalism spreading across the
globe.”[1] It calls to mind “homogenizing exports of the US” such as Nike, McDonald’s, and MTV.[2]
However, since globalization can be defined as a process of an “ever more interdependent world”[3]
where “political, economic, social, and cultural relationships are not restricted to territorial boundaries
or to state actors,” globalization has much do with its impact on cultures.[4]

As goods and finance crisscross across the globe, globalization shifts the cultural makeup of the globe
and creates a homogenized “global culture.”[5] Although not a new phenomenon, the process of
globalization has truly made the world a smaller place in which political, social, and economic events
elsewhere affect individuals anywhere.[6] As a result, individuals “search for constant time and space-
bounded identities” in a world ever changing by the day.[7] One such identity is religion.

you do? Write the output of your conversation in the space below.

A number of these experts wrote about both sides of the story, taking the time to point out some of the
ways in which digital life is a blessing and a curse. A selection of these mixed-response anecdotes
follows.

technologies prevailed in the modern society. Let them tell a story on how they spend their day, what
leisure activities they do, and how they do things without digital technologies.
Write your answer in the space provided.

Once the initial shock of the situation wore off, you’d start getting ready for work. Unfortunately, you
wouldn’t be able to turn on the lights, shower or brush your teeth. Why? Power, gas and water are
public utilities run by massive computer systems.
Then you would get dressed and go outside to your car. Unless the car was manufactured over three
decades ago, it wouldn’t start. Most everything in a car today is operated by a controller area network
(basically an onboard computer). Public transportation would be a no-go for the same reason. Even if
your car did start, traffic would be a nightmare with all the traffic lights out. You’d finally decide to walk
to work.

Reflect: would you be able to survive a world without these new technologies available to you?
