Lecture 4: Adding & Subtracting Fractions

The document is a lecture on adding and subtracting fractions. It discusses multiplying fractions by multiplying the numerators and denominators, and provides examples. It then outlines a step-by-step process for adding and subtracting fractions, which involves converting mixed fractions to improper fractions, finding the lowest common denominator, rewriting the fractions with the common denominator, and then adding or subtracting the numerators. It provides examples of adding and subtracting fractions using this process. Finally, it gives homework problems for students to practice evaluating fraction additions and subtractions.

Lecture 4: Adding & Subtracting Fractions

Lecturer: Mr. Lewis Carroll

4.1 Multiplying Fractions

In general, when multiplying fractions, we no longer need to find any . Instead we can happily
multiply the numerator by the and the denominator by the .

1 2
Example 4.1 Evaluate 2 × 3 =

It is especially important that we remember to convert all mixed fractions to improper fractions when
we multiply them!

Example 4.2 Evaluate 1 23 × 4 16 =

Example 4.3 Determine the LCM/LCD between the numbers 4, 6 and 3.

1
Example 4.4 Determine the LCM/LCD between the fractions 2 and 53 .

4.2 Adding & Subtracting Fractions

We will consider a step-by-step process for adding and subtracting fractions below.

1. If the fractions are mixed, convert them to fractions.

2. Determine whether the denominators are the same. If they are, skip to Step (6.)
3. Determine the LCD/LCM between the denominators of all fractions.
4. Write the new fractions with the LCD/LCM you determined in Step (2.). Leave the
blank for now!
5. Rewrite the new fractions as Equivalent Fractions to the originals. Think about what you multiplied
the denominator by in the original fraction, to get the LCD/LCM in your rewritten fractions.
6. Evaluate by adding or subtracting only the numerators, leaving the denominator the same!
