REPORTED SPEECH
Complete the sentences by changing the quoted speech to reported speech.
Use formal sequence of tenses as appropriate. (Pay attention to whether the
reporting verb is past or present.)

1. I asked Martin, “Are you planning to enter law school?”


 I asked Martin if he was planning to enter law school.
2. Edward just asked me, “What time does the movie begin?”
 Edward wants to know what time the movie began.
3. Fred asked, “Can we still get tickets for the concert?”
 Fred asked if they could still get tickets for the concert.
4. Charles said, “When will the final decision be made?”
 Charles wanted to know when the final decision would be made.
5. Frank asked Eliz, “Where were you yesterday afternoon?”
 Frank asked Eliz where she had been the afternoon before.
6. I asked myself, “Am I doing the right thing?”
 I wondered if I was doing the right thing.
7. All of the farmers are asking, “When is this terrible drought going to end?”
 All of the farmers are wondering when that terrible drought is going to end.
8. Our tour guide said, “We’ll be leaving around 7:00 tomorrow morning.”
 Our tour guide told us that we would be leaving around 7:00 the following
morning.
9. Mom said to her son, “You had better go to bed early or else you would be
sick again.”
 Mom told her son that he had had better go to bed early or else he would
have been sick again._______
10. Beth asked, “Who should I give this message to?”
 Beth asked me who she should give that message to.

Put the following into indirect speech.

1. “It isn’t so foggy today as it was yesterday,” I remarked.


- I remarked that it wasn't so foggy that day as it had been the day before.
2. “The new underpass is being officially opened the day after tomorrow,”
said the BBC announcer.
- The BBC announcer said that the new underpass was being officially
opened
3. “We have moved into our new flat. We don’t like it nearly so much as our
last one,” said my aunt.
- My aunt said they had moved into their new flat but they didn't like it
nearly so much as their last one

of antiques.
8. “Have you gone completely mad?” I asked. “Do you want to blow us all
up?”
- I asked if he had gone completely mad and wanted to blow us all up.
9. “Read the notice about life-saving equipment,” advised the air-hostess.
- The air-hostess advised me to read the notice about life-saving
equipment.
10. “Don’t forget to feed the goldfish,” Mary said to her brother.
- Mary reminded her brother to feed the goldfish.
11. “Why don’t you go by train? It’s much less tiring than driving,” I said.
12. “I wish you’d sit still!” said the artist. “How do you expect me to paint you
when you keep jerking your head?”
13. “You must see this exhibition!” said all my friends.
14. “I should plant daffodils, if I were you,” I said to them.
15. “Would you mind moving your car?” he said. “It’s blocking my gate.”
16. “Would you like to peel the potatoes?” said Ann, handing me a knife.
17. “Where shall I hang my new picture?” he said. “Would it look well over the
mantelpiece?”
18. “Let’s leave the washing-up till tomorrow,” he suggested. “I hate washing
up last thing at night.”
19. “I’ll drop you from the team if you don’t try harder,” said the captain.
20. – the captain threatened to drop me from the team unless I try harder
21. “He expects a lot of work for very little money,” complained one of the
typists. “Yes, he does,” agreed the other.
