Earl's Practical Test Part 2 (Lab Report Template) - Dk014

1) The document reports on a chemistry lab experiment to determine the concentration of diluted sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution and hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution using titration. 2) The experiment involved preparing a standard 0.2M NaOH solution and titrating it with HCl solution. The average volume of HCl used was calculated. 3) Using the chemical reaction of HCl and NaOH, the concentration of the HCl solution was determined to be 0.2M, matching the concentration of the NaOH standard solution.

STANDARD SOLUTION AND DETERMINATION OF THE

CONCENTRATION OF ACID SOLUTION
…………………………………………………………………………………
(Title of Experiment)
[2 mark]
OBJECTIVES [2marks]

1. To determine the concentration of diluted sodium hydroxide, NaOH

solution.
2. To determine the concentration of hydrochloric acid , HCl solution using the
titration technique.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND [4 marks]

Standard solution is a solution of accurately known concentration.

Standard solution is used to determine the concentration of other substances, such

as solutions in titration.

An equivalence point is the point in a titration at which the added is just enough
to reacts completely with the electrolyte according to stoichiometry.

The point at which the indicator changes colour is called the end point.

APPARATUS [3 marks]

:Burette, spatula, glass rod, white tile, retort stand,4 conical flask , pipette filler,
filter funnel, pipette (10 mL) volumetric flask (100 mL),beaker.

REAGENTS : Phenolphthalein, sodium hydroxide solution 2.0 M, distilled water,

hydrochloric acid solution [2
marks]

PROCEDURE [3 marks]
(Write in a numbered steps, past tense and passive words in a proper sentence for
Procedure Part A)

(A) Preparation of a Standard Solution.

1. All the apparatus was rinsed throughly with the distilled water before starting
the experiment
2. 20mL of 2.0 M sodium hydroxide, NaOH solution filled in approximately into
a beaker
3. 10 m L pipette rinsed with 2.0 M sodium hydroxide, NaOH solution
4. 10 m L of 2.0 M sodium hydroxide, NaOH solution pipetted into 100m L
volumetric flask
5. Distilled water added up to the graduated mark of the volumetric flask
6. The flask was stopped and shaked until the solution is homogenous. The
diluted NaOH solution was ready for titration.

(B) Standardisation of Hydrochloric Acid Solution.

1. 10 mL pipette was rinsed with the diluted NaOH solution.

2. 10 mL of the diluted NaOH was pipetted into a clean 100 mL of conical
flask.
3. 3 drops of phenolphthalein were added into the NaOH solution.
4. A clean burette was rinsed with HCl solution.
5. The burette was filled with HCl solution and the initial reading was
recorded.
6. The NaOH solution was titrated with the HCl solution.
7. The final reading of the burette was recorded.
8. Steps 5-7 were repeated for three times. Reading 1, Reading 2 and Reading
3 were recorded respectively.

9. The solution was discarded down the sink with a copious amount of water.
All apparatus were cleaned.
10.The data from the experiment were tabulated.

RESULTS [15 marks]

Titration Gross I II III

Initial reading 0.00 0.00 0.00 9.70
Final reading 10.55 9.70 9.70 19.70
Volume of HCl 10.55 9.70 9.70 10.00

CALCULATIONS
1. Calculate the average volume of hydrochloric acid, HCl solution.
[2 marks]
(9.70+9.70+10.00) 3 = 9.80 m L

2. Calculate the concentration of the sodium hydroxide, NaOH solution

prepared in Part (A). [3 marks]

M1 x V1 = M2 x V2
CHEMISTRY LAB REPORT DK014

2.0 M x 10 m L = M2 x 100m L
M2 = (2.0 M x 10 m L) 100 m L
= 0.2 M

3. Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction between NaOH and
HCl solutions. [2 marks]
HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O

4. State the mol ratio of HCl to NaOH. [1 mark]

Mol ratio of HCl to NaOH is 1:1

5. Calculate the concentration of the hydrochloric, HCl solution used in the

experiment. [5 marks]

CHEMICAL EQUATION: HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O

Mol ratio of HCl to NaOH is 1:1
Ma x Va / Mb x Vb = 1/1
Ma x 9.80 m L = 0.2 M x 10.00 m L
Ma = 0.20 M

6. DISCUSSION [4
marks]
1. State TWO possible problems encountered during the experiment.
a) Parallax error occurred
CHEMISTRY LAB REPORT DK014

b) Air bubble trapped inside the tip of the burette

2. State TWO precaution steps that should be taken during the experiment.
a) Ensure no air bubble were trapped inside the tip of burette
b) Titration were repeated 3 times for more accurate results

CONCLUSION [2 marks]

1. The concentration of diluted NaOH is 0.20 M

2. The concentration of HCl is 0.20 M
