Name: Erica Moen

Date: 4/7/2020
Discipline: Math
Grade Level: 4

TOPIC: Number and Operations – Factors

LESSON FOCUS: The lesson will have students gain familiarity with factors.

STANDARD(S):
4.OA.4:
• Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-36.
• Recognize that a whole number is a multiple of each of its factors.
• Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-36 is a multiple of a given
one-digit number.
• Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-36 is prime or composite.

OBJECTIVE(S):
• The student will find factors of whole numbers.
• The student will find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers.

ASSESSMENT:
• Find a number in your house and find the factor pairs of that number.
• Take your age and one of your parent’s age and find the GCF of your ages.

MATERIALS:
• Computer
• PowerPoint
• Factor Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCGdGielcBs
• GCF Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSNEVv81An4
• Pencil
• Paper

1. Motivation: The student will watch the rest of the video from the previous lesson,
starting at 2:12. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCGdGielcBs
The student will take their age and write down factors that make their age.
2. The teacher will explain:
• What is a factor?
- A factor is a number that is multiplied by another number to achieve a
product.
• What is a factor pair?
- A factor pair is the two factors that are multiplied to find a product.
- 3 x 5 = 15. 3 x 5 is the factor pair.
3. The teacher will model how to find all the factors of a number:
• The number is 32.
• 1 x 32 = 32
• 2 x 16 = 32
• 4 x 8 = 32
4. The teacher will give another number. Students will find the factor pairs on their own
and then check their answer.
• The number is 20.
• 1 x 20 = 20
• 2 x 10 = 20
• 4 x 5 = 20
• The correct answer will be shown on the next slide.
5. The teacher will explain what greatest common factor is:
• What is greatest common factor?
- The greatest common factor is the greatest number that is a factor of two or
more numbers.
6. The student will watch a video that shows how to find the greatest common factor of
two numbers.
7. The teacher will show an example of how to find the GCF.
- Find the GCF of 15 and 40.
- First, find the factors of 15.
- Next, find the factors of 40.
- Write the prime factorization of 15.
- Write the prime factorization of 40.
- Circle the factors they both have in common.
- Since 15 and 40 only have one factor in common, which is 5, the GCF = 5.
- If the two numbers have more than one factor in common, multiply the
factors!
- Picture is included for a visual aid.
8. The student will try a problem on their own.
- Find the GCF of 12 and 16.
- The student can check their answer on the next slide.
- The correct answer is given.
- The GCF of 12 and 16 is 4.
- Since they both have two 2’s in common, you multiply 2 x 2 which equals 4.
- Picture is included for a visual aid.
9. The student will keep practicing on their own.
- Find a number in your house and find the factor pairs of that number.
- Take your age and one of your parent’s age and find the GCF of your ages.

MODIFICATION/DIFFERENTIATION:
• Provide a number line for students labeled 1-36.
• Encourage students to pause and go back in the lesson to keep practicing if they
need to.
Proficiency Scale

4 I can also:
• Find factors and multiples of whole numbers larger than 36.
• Find the LCM and GCF of three whole numbers.

*3* I can:
Standard: • Find factors and multiples of whole numbers in the range 1-36.
4.OA.4 • Tell if a number is prime or composite.
• Find the LCM and GCF of two whole numbers.

2 Vocabulary: Skills:
• Multiples • Find multiples of whole numbers
• Factors in the range 1-36.
• Factor pair • Find all factor pairs of whole
• Prime Number numbers in the range 1-36.
• Composite Number • Recognize that a whole number
• Least Common Multiple is a multiple of each of its
(LCM) factors.
• Greatest Common Factor • Determine if a number is prime
(GCF) or composite.
• Find the LCM of two whole
numbers.
• Find the GCF of two whole
numbers.
