DESIGN OF STAGING

INTRODUCTION:

The design note deals with the design of staging for 40 m typical spans.

The staging consists of crib staging supported at longitudinal members at its top, which in
turn provides support for transverse members over which the shuttering of the superstructures
shall be supportive.

The two I shaped girders placed at a transverse spacing of 1200mm C/C and resting over four
cribs of 500x500 mm outer dimension connected by single lacing system to from a single
crib tower deriving its support through well cap at its base.

The calculation of loads for the design of staging has been done in detail along the following
pages.

The design has been done as per codal guidelines laid by IS: 800-1984 and IRC 87.

Any other reference wherever used have been marked along the note for reader’s
convenience.

DESIGN OF STAGING

LOAD CALCULATION PER GIRDER OF 40M LENGTH

For Mid Portion of the Beam:

Weight mid portion of girder

= 2.5 x [0.1955 x 1.25 + {(1.25+0.300)/2} x 0.1 + 0.83 x 0.240+ 0.2 X
(0.83+0.300)/2} +0.300 X 2.249]
= 2.5 [0.2444 +0.0775 +0.1992 +0.113 +0.6747]
= 3.272 Tonnes / m

3
For End Portion of the Beam:

Weight end portion of girder

= 2.5 x [0.1955x 1.25 + {(1.25 + 0.830)/2} x (0.043+0.043)/2
+ 0.830 x 2.777]
= 2.6 x [0. 2444 + 0.0447 + 2.305]
= 6.48 Tonnes/m

Weight of intermediate cross girder

= 2 x 2.5 x 0.3 {0.100 x (1.25 - 0.300)/2 + (0.240 + 0.4875)/2 x
0.200 + (3 – 0.1955 – 0.25 - 0.20) x 0.4875}
= 1.5 (0.0475 + 0.07275 +1.1478)
= 1.9 t

Weight of end Diaphragm

= 2 x 2.5 x 0.45 {(0.030 + 0.044)/2 x 0.240/2 + (3-0180 –
(0.030+ 0.044)/2) x 0.240
= 2.25 x (0.004 + 0.668)
= 1.512 t= 1.6 t

4
AVERAGE LOADING:

Total load of 40m span girder

= 2{3.12 x 14.7 + (3.12+6.48)/2 x 2.5 +6.48 x 2.9 + 1.6 + 1.9
+1.9/2}
= 2 (45.864 + 13.920 + 18.792 + 1.6+ 1.9 +0.950)
= 166.05 tones
Say 170 t

CALCULATION OF LOAD ON TEMPORARY STRUCTURE:

Total load of 40 m span girder = 170 t

Sketch of stucturals between girder bottom and vertical cribs

Weight of the shuttering @ 60 Kg/m2 = 240 x 0.6 = 14.4 t

L.L. during construction =10 t

Total load = 195 t

5
Check for ISMC 75 in transverse direction:-

Since 4 nos. of ISMC 75 are provided @ 800 mm c/c, hence load on each member
= (4.88 x0.800)/4 = 0.976 t. 0.976 t

Max. moment =WL2/8 = 0.976 X 0.82/8

= 0.078 Tonnes-m
Permissible stress = 190 N/mm2 800 mm
Z required = [(0.078 x 1000 x 9.81 x 1000) / 190
= 4027 mm3
= 4.027 cm3
Z provided = 20.3 cm 3 > 4.027 cm3, Hence Safe.

Check for Shear:-

Max shear force = WL/2 = 0.39 Tones

C/S area =8.67 cm2
Shear stress = [(0.39 x 1000 x 9.81) / (8.67 x 10 x 10)
= 4.41 N/mm2
Permissible stress = 0.40 f y
= 166 N/mm2 > 4.41 N/mm2 Hence OK

Check for ISMC 100 in transverse direction:-

Since ISMC 100 are provided @ 800 mm c/c, hence load on each member
3.9 t
= (4.88 x0.800) = 3.9 t.
Max. moment =WL2/8 = 3.9 X 0.82/8
= 0.312 Tonnes-m 800 mm
Permissible stress = 190 N/mm2
Z required = [(0.312 x 1000 x 9.81 x 1000) / 190
= 16109 mm3
= 16.109 cm3
Z provided = 37.3 cm 3 > 16.109 cm3, Hence Safe.

6
Check for Shear:-

Max shear force = WL/2 = 1.56 Tones

C/S area =11.7 cm2
Shear stress = [(1.56 x 1000 x 9.81) / (11.7 x 10 x 10)
= 13.08 N/mm2
Permissible stress = 0.40 f y
= 166 N/mm2 > 13.08 N/mm2 Hence OK

Check for ISMB 300 in longitudinal direction:-

7.93 t

Load per 3.25 m span = 4.88 x 3.25 = 15.86 t

Providing two nos. of ISMB 300 load on each member = 15.86/2 = 7.93 t 3.25 M

Max. moment =WL2/8 = 7.93 X 3.252/8

= 10.47 Tonnes-m
Permissible stress = 190 N/mm2
Z required = [(10.47 x 1000 x 9.81 x 1000) / 190
= 540582 mm3
= 540.58 cm3
Z provided = 573.6cm 3 > 540.58 cm3, Hence Safe.

Check for Shear:-

Max shear force = WL/2 = 12.88 Tones

C/S area = 56.26 cm2
Shear stress = [(12.88 x 1000 x 9.81) / (56.26 x 10 x 10)
= 22.45 N/mm2
Permissible stress = 0.40 f y
= 166 N/mm2 > 22.45 N/mm2 Hence OK
7
Check for ISMB 150 in transverse direction:-

Providing @ 1 m c/c, hence load per meter span = (4.88 x 1) = 4.88 t 0.61 t
Max. moment =WL2/8 = 4.88 X 12/8
= 0.61 Tonnes-m
Permissible stress = 190 N/mm2 1M
Z required = [(0.61 x 1000 x 9.81 x 1000) / 190
= 31495 mm3
= 31.495 cm3
Z provided = 96.9 cm 3 > 31.495 cm3, Hence Safe.
