IT versus ICT
These abbreviations are expanded as follows:
IT refers to information technology.
ICT refers to information & communication technology.
ICT on the other hand refers to technology that provide access to information through
telecommunications. The term IT and ICT are similar only that ICT has focus on
communication technology. Telecommunication is the transmission of signals over long
distances.
Computer
Computers are made up of hardware and software.
A computer is defined as an electronic device that accepts data from the user, processes
it, produces results, displays the results to the user and stores the results for future usage.
A computer performs input function, processing, output and storage. That is we have an
input function, processing function, output function and storage function. The input
function is done by the keyboard. Processing is done by central processing unit(CPU).
The output function produces results. For output function we have a printer and display
is done by a monitor. Storage function is done by a hard drive, pen drive. Within the
processing part they is the software.
Hardware is anything you can touch on the computer e.g. monitor, keyboard, hard drive.
In CPU they is ALU (arithmetic logic unit) which make the calculations and some logic.
So the computer is made up of the two components, the hardware and software.
Functions of computer
A computer has four major functions and these are as follows:
