Solar Energy and The Atmosphere: Learning Activity Sheet (Las)

This learning activity sheet discusses the Earth's atmosphere and atmospheric processes. It contains 6 activities that explore the composition of the atmosphere, the layers of the atmosphere and how temperature varies with altitude, land and sea breezes, monsoons, and the three-cell model of global wind circulation. Students are tasked with filling in tables and diagrams, answering questions, and completing a cloze reading activity to demonstrate their understanding of these atmospheric concepts.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET (LAS)

GRADE 7 – EARTH AND SPACE

Name: Date: Rating/Score:

SOLAR ENERGY AND THE ATMOSPHERE

Activity 1: It’s Your Turn.Act Now!

The Earth’s atmosphere is composed of different gases making life possible on the planet
Earth. Do the activity below to learn more about these gases.

DIRECTIONS: Fill in the blanks with missing letters. Use the first letter inside each box
and the descriptions below as clues.

Questions:
1. Cite the importance of the atmosphere to living things?
2. What course of action would you take to lessen the effect of increasing carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere?

Activity 2: The Amazing Layer

DIRECTIONS: Fill in Table 1 with the letter of the illustration that describes the features
commonly found in each atmospheric layer. Then, characterize each layer.

Illustrated by Ericson Y. Villasoto

Figure 1. Features of the Atmospheric Layers

Specific Weeks: 3-4(LAS2)
Target Competency: Discuss how energy from the Sun interacts with the layers of the atmosphere.
(S7ES-IVd-3)

Activity 3: HI- LO (Symbol Coding)

DIRECTIONS: Analyze the graph, then identify the estimated altitude and estimated
temperatures of each layer. Using the description code below, draw the
symbols that best represent the relationship between altitude and
temperature in each layer. Write the description on the last column of the
table.

Questions
1. What is the basis of dividing the atmosphere into different layers?
2. What is the general pattern of temperature in each atmospheric layer?

Activity 4: A Breezy Blowy Day

A. DIRECTIONS: Use the key concepts to explain the occurrence of land and sea breezes.

KEY CONCEPTS: Sea Breeze

• The land heats up faster than
water.
• The land cools off faster than
water.
• As the warm air rises, the
surrounding air moves in to
replace the rising warm air. Land Breeze
• At daytime, the air moves from
the sea to the land.
• At nighttime, the air moves
from the land towards the sea.

B. DIRECTIONS: Draw an arrow and describe the movements of air in a land breeze and
sea breeze. Identify the type of breeze for each diagram.

Illustrated by Lilian M. Villarosa

Figure 3.Types of Breeze

Specific Weeks: 3-4 (LAS2)

Target Competency: Account for the occurrence of land and sea breezes, monsoons, and intertropical
convergence zone (ITCZ). S7ES-IVf-4

Activity 6: Meet Me Halfway

DIRECTIONS: Study the Three-cell model of air circulation.

Answer the following:

1. Describe the general movement of air in
the northern hemisphere and in the
southern hemisphere.

2. Explain what happens when the northeast

trades and the southeast trades meet at the
equator.

3. Explain the occurrence of ITCZ in the

equator.

convergence zone (ITCZ). S7ES-IVf-4
Note to the Facilitator: CLOZE Reading is a reading comprehension activity where students are required to
fill in the blanks within a passage with correct words from a word bank.
