What This Module is About

Introductory Message
Welcome to the Science 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Plant and
Animal Cells.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

from public schools to assist you, the teacher or facilitator, in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

To the facilitators:

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You
also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their
own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

To the parents:
As a vital partners in education, your support to your children’s learning at home, is
a great factor to ensure that they will become succesful in what they do. As a parents,
you are expected to monitor your children’s progress while they are accomplishing the
tasks in this module while at the same time, ensuring that they learn independently.

The objectives set for this learning material will be certainly accomplished with your
steadfast guidance and support.

To the learners:

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

Furthermore, it is our objective that you will have fun while going through this material.
Take charge of your learning pace and in no time, you will successfully meet the
targets and objectives set in this module which are intended for your ultimate
development as a learner and as a person.
How to Learn from this Module
To achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the following:
• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.
• Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities and exercises diligently.
• Answer all the given tests and exercises.

this module.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
7. If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.
8. We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and
gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it.

Plant and Animal Cells
Lesson

What I Need To Know

After going through this module, you are expected to differentiate plant and
animal cells according to presence or absence of certain organelles. (S7LT-IIe-4)

Specifically, you are also expected to:

1. identify the cell organelles present in plant cell and in animal cell; and,
2. construct a Venn diagram showing the differences and similarities of plant and
animal cells.

What’s New
Comparing Plant and Animal Cells
Below are diagrammatic presentations of plant and animal cells and their parts.
Study closely Figures 1 and 2, and answer the questions that follow.

Figure 1. Parts of a plant cell

Figure 2. Parts of an animal cell

Q1. Compare the shape of a plant cell with that of an animal cell as shown in
Figure 1 and 2.
Q2. Which cell parts are found in both cells?
Q3. Which are present only in animal cells?
Q4. Which are present only in plant cells?

2
What Is It
Cell is the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism. It has
three basic parts: the cell/plasma membrane, cytoplasm with the organelles and
nucleus.
1. The cell/plasma membrane encloses the cell and separates what is inside
it from its environment. It also controls what goes into and out of the cell. The plasma
membrane allows entry of materials needed by the cell and eliminates those which
are not needed.
2. The cytoplasm consists of a jelly-like substance where all the organelles
are located. Many different activities of the cell occur in the cytoplasm. The table
below presents the cytoplasmic organelles that are present in plant and animal
cells.

Organelle Function Plant Animal

3. The nucleus is a part of cells which is easily seen. It is very important

because it controls all the activities of the other parts that occur within the cell. The
nucleus contains materials that play a role in heredity.
You have seen that plant cells have cell walls. The cell wall is made of stiff
material that forms the outermost part of plant cells. This gives shape and
protection to them.

Directions. Put a check (/) mark in the column where each of the cell
part or organelle is found.

What I Have Learned

A Venn Diagram shows relationships between and among sets or groups of

objects that have something in common. It uses two circles that overlap with one
another. The common things are found in the overlapping area, while the differences
are in the non-overlapping areas.
Using the information you have gathered from Figures 1 and 2, fill in the Venn
diagram below. Parts or organelles found in both plant and animal cells must be
written in the overlapping area. Write the part/s or organelle/s found only in plant
cells in the left non-overlapping area and write the part/s or organelle/s found in
animals only in the right non-overlapping area.
