REFRACTION - SNELL’S LAW
Aim: To Verify the laws of refraction and to determine the refractive index of glass in
form of a rectangular slab.
Apparatus:
A rectangular block of glass, a drawing board, four drawing pins, a plain sheet of paper,
four paper fixing pins,15 cm rule and a hard pointed pencil.
Procedure:
Fix the plane sheet of paper on the drawing board with the help of paper fixing pins.
1. Place the block of glass in the middle of the paper and draw its outline ABCD with
a sharp pencil. Remove the block of glass.
2. Take a point O, about 5 cm from A. Draw a normal MN on AB at the point O as
shown in Fig.
3. Make a line OX making an angle i = NOX = 30°
4. Place the glass block at its position ABCD.
5. Fix two pins at P and Q on the line OX. Look from the other side of the block and
fix two more pins R and S, in such a way that the tips of all the pins, P, Q, R and
S, appear to lie on one straight line.
6. Remove the pins R and S and mark their position with a pencil. Remove the
glass block. Join R to S and extend back to meet the boundary DC at I Join O to
I, which is the path of the light through the glass block. QO is the incident ray, OI
Is the refracted ray and IS the emergent ray.
7. Draw other incident rays OX making Ði = 40°, 50°, 60°, 70 and repeat the
experiment to obtain the corresponding angle of refractions ÐIOM ( Ðr ).
8. Find the values of “sin i ” and “sin r “in each case, from the Log table.
9. Calculate Refractive Index of glass by the formula
μ= sin i / sin r
Refractive
No. of Angle i Angle r sin i Sin r Index (μ)
observation
μ= sin i / sin r
Observation:
Conclusion: -
Refractive index of glass = 1.5
