Propeller Shaft Earthing System

Propeller Shaft Earthing System is consisting of silver alloy metal band, silver-graphite brush and
shaft-meter for out hull and it is a system aims to cathodic protection current of Propeller as well as
Spark Erosion by continually connecting Propeller Shaft and ship’s hull therefore lessening
resistance between 2 different kinds of metals.

Spark Erosion
As it rotates, it arises electric circuit within the area of , (ship's hull - sea water - Propeller - shaft -
shaft ground - ship's hull), which may cause sparks around shaft ground area.
This is the basic principle of spark erosion and may cause erosion within shaft ground's metal and a
part of crank shaft.

Maintenance & Control

Reading of Shaft-Hull mV meter should always reach under 75mV. (Under 50mV is best)
When the reading reaches above 50mV as above, surface of silver alloy band and silver-graphite 1
brush should be thoroughly cleaned by clean cloth dampened with white spirits or similar.
If 50mV reading can not be achieved after the cleaning, brush stopper’s spring, the condition of the
setting of system, wiring etc. should be checked.
Nothing should be found with this check up, repeating correct installation procedure should be
necessary.
Under the normal circumstances, the system operates with mV meter reading of 500mV range,
however it can be switched to 50 mV range by the switch located on the bottom of the meter.

Around once a week check up should be done as follows:-

a) SUpring
soiling
consummation
loosening
b) brush
consummation
damage/connection of read wiring
c) earth cable
connection
d) brush holder
installation
brush stopper spring

If any problems found regarding above, these should be eliminated immediately.

1
Propeller Shaft Grounding System
1) Reverse side of the Slipring and the attaching surface should be
sandpapered and thoroughly cleaned with spirits or similar.
* Surface of the Slipring should be protected with covering tapes. Both shaft
and Slipring should be thoroughly cleaned in order not to hinder electrical
connection between them.
2) By using adjustable fastener provided, set slipring roughly to the propeller
shaft and cut excess slipring as well as adjustable fastener.
* When you cut excess off, extra care should be taken to watch square halls of
adjustable fastener.

3) Cut surface of the slipring should not be like figure A, so that cut surface
should be slightly bent inwards and as for figure B, should be filed to a
degree and 0.И mm apart between.

4) frap slipring to the shaft tightly and fasten tightly.

5) Fill the gap between cut surfaces with epoxy-putty provided ( should be
applied in excess ) and when it is hardened completely, file with sandpapers
to even surface.
* Epoxy-putty should be mixed as 1 part of white putty to 1 translucent putty
with clean hands. Hardening period is 24 hours.
* If the cut surface should be connected unevenly with excess putty, it causes
over consummation of brushes.
rzzzzz^ m zzzzzzzzzi
6) Bracket for Earth Brush Holder should be installed.
1) Between Brush Holder and Slipring’s orbit should becomes 34 (minimum)
and the Brush Holder comes in center of the slipring orbit, fix
brush holder by welding 16mm diameter spindle/bolt to the bracket.

8) Connect one end of cable (38mm) to the brush holder and the other end to
Ship’s hull directly by welding.
9) Set the brush through end halls of brush holders and connect end of brush
cable to brush holder s bolt. (Spring pressure of Brush should be around 450g )
10) On completion of installation, silicon sealant (should be provided dy
maker) should be applied to both side of sliprings to avoid penetration
of oil, etc.
Shaft Monitoring System

1 This system is consisting of installation panels including each terminals (shaft-hull mV meter) and
brush holder for monitoring.
The system is completely independent and do not need outer power supply.

2. Brush holder is insulated from Ship’s hull. And it is connected to mV meter to Ship"' hull
earthing therefore, mV meter is indicating shaft-hull mV meter.
.

3 Monitoring brush should be located so that it should run above existing slipring truck, (see figure)

4 For monitoring brush holder (single type), to the insulated adjust arm provided attach straight
spindle which brush holder should be installed.

5 Attach insulated adjust arm to the spindle which earthing brush holder (double type) is located,
install monitoring brush holder to the center of slipring and where Blipring fixing bracket should
not be in contact of brush holder/insulated adjust arm while shaft’s rotating. Endure tightening of
each bolt for maximum fixation.

£ Locate brush to where appropriate by pulling pressure spring of brush holder.

Adjust the brush degree against the surface of the slipring becomes vertical.

г Г-: omect wiring from brush to the brush holder's bolt.

r Install monitor panel (mV meter) where appropriate near slipring.

Set figure for details of diameter of halls etc.
Endure Monitor panel should be located to where easily accessible.
Id the monitor panel should be located more than 20 m from Slipring, Shield cable should be used for
this installation.
Between monitoring brush holder and monitor panel should be connected with cable, minimum
bn - 1
t i r n n ; should be done with cable, minimum 2mm 2 to nearby ship’s hull.
