Key Understanding to be Trending as an important skill in the 21st century that allows activities toward future
developed: events.
Objectives: Knowledge Identify a trend and a fad.
Skills Discover the differences of a trend from a fad.
Attitudes Integrate critical thinking in dealing with fads and trends.
The learner understands the emergence of trends and patterns.
Content:

Learning Resources: Trends, Networks, and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century Gladys P. Mangiduyos, pp.
98-100 visual aids, and pictures.

Activity/Analysis From the photo gallery, students will pick the pictures that will associate from the
word “TREND”

TREND

Abstraction: TREND is a “recurrent phenomenon that takes place over time and rise to speculation
on the future” (Sanders, Soper, and Rothwell 2002).

Characteristics of a Trend:
o long staying power and enjoy a long period of popularity
o acceptability
o cultural basis
o transitional increase

FAD is an interest or fashion that is very popular for a short time.


A trend is different from a fad that a trend evolves and changes as it continues to
grow. And a fad, on the other hand, always has a beginning, an end and is a short –
lived fashion.
Application: As a 21st century learner, how are you going to apply critical thinking skills in dealing
with trends and fads?
Assessment: Identify if the statements in the first column are a trend or a fad. Write your answer in
a 1/2 sheet of paper.
