Schematic of the steering tiller position sensor 1

The CID 1470 diagnostic code is associated with the steering tiller position sensor 1 for the
steering motor. The FMI 08 means that the Power Train ECM reads the duty cycle of the
sensor as being out of range.

The output frequency of the position sensor is approximately 500 HZ. The value of the
sensor duty cycle is approximately 50% in the center position. The duty cycle of the signal
increases as the steering lever is moved from the center position to the right. The value of
the sensor duty cycle is approximately 90% in the right position. The duty cycle of the
signal decreases as the steering lever is moved from the center position to the left. The
value of the sensor duty cycle is approximately 10% in the left position.

The possible causes of this condition are listed below:

 The signal circuit is shorted to the +battery or shorted to ground intermittently.

 The signal circuit is open intermittently or the sensor is disconnected.
 The sensor may have failed.

System Response:

 The "steering tiller" function will be disabled.

Note: This diagnostic code may be an intermittent condition.

Note: This procedure may cause new diagnostic codes to be recorded. Ignore these created
diagnostic codes. When the procedure is completed, clear the created diagnostic codes.

Test Step 1. CHECK FOR POWER AT THE SENSOR

A. Do not disconnect the harness connector from the sensor.

B. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert a 7X-1710 Multimeter
Probe along contact 1 (wire C985-BU) for the voltage supply.

C. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the ON position.

D. Measure the voltage from contact 1 (wire C985-BU) to contact 2 (wire J766-PU).

Expected Result:

The voltage is 8 VDC.

Results:
 OK - The voltage is 8 VDC. Proceed to Test Step 3.
 NOT OK - The voltage is not 8 VDC. The circuit is open.

Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

STOP

Test Step 2. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT OF THE SENSOR

A. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

B. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, remove the 7X-1710 Multimeter
Probe from contact 1.

C. Insert the probe along the signal wire (contact 3).

D. At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert the 7X-1710 Multimeter
Probe along the ground wire (contact 2).

E. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

F. Monitor the signal of the sensor with the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter .

G. Without disconnecting the sensor or hardware associated with the sensor from the
machine, take the sensor through the full operating range.

Expected Result:

The sensor signal responds in the manner that is described at the beginning of this
procedure.

Results:

 OK - The sensor signal responds correctly. The sensor is operating correctly.

Proceed to Test Step 3.
 NOT OK - The sensor signal does not respond correctly. The sensor is NOT
operating correctly.

Repair: Replace the sensor.

STOP

Test Step 3. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT AT THE ECM

A. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
B. Insert the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probes into the back of the ECM connector along J2-
24 (wire 828-WH) and J1-45 (wire J766-PU).

C. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

D. Monitor the signal of the sensor with the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter .

Proceed to Test Step 4.
 NOT OK - The sensor signal does not respond correctly. The harness has failed.

Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

STOP

Test Step 4. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT IN THE HARNESS

A. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

B. Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the sensor and the Power Train
ECM.

C. Measure the resistance between contact J2-24 (wire 828-WH) and all contacts that
are used in the machine harness connectors for the Power Train ECM.

Expected Result:

The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

 OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The circuit is correct. Proceed to
Test Step 5.
 NOT OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The signal circuit is shorted to
another circuit in the harness.
Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

STOP

Test Step 5. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE

A. Inspect the harness connectors and clean the contacts of the machine harness
connectors.

B. Reconnect all harness connectors.

C. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

D. Operate the machine.

E. Check the status of the CID 1471 FMI 08 diagnostic code.

Expected Result:

The CID 1471 FMI 08 diagnostic code is not active.

Results:

 OK - The CID 1471 FMI 08 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does
not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code may have been caused by a poor
electrical connection that was corrected when a harness connector was disconnected
and reconnected.

Repair: Resume normal operation.

STOP

 NOT OK - The CID 1471 FMI 08 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code
has not been corrected.

Repair: With Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET), if available, perform a

"Wiggle Test" on the steering tiller position sensor 1 circuit in the machine wiring
harness. The wiggle test may detect momentary or intermittent shorts or opens in
the machine wiring harness. If all possible causes of the problem have been
investigated and no problem can be found, you may need to replace the Power Train
ECM.Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact the Technical Communicator at
your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may
greatly reduce repair time and expense. If the ECM must be replaced, refer to
Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
