PRINCIPLES OF ARTS ELEMENTS OF ARTS

What’s In

Elements and Principles in

Lesson 1
Modern Art

The elements and principles of art are the foundation of the language we used to talk
about arts.

The elements of art are the visual tools that the artist uses to create a composition
such as line, shape, form, colour, texture, space and value. On the other hand, the
principles of arts, represent how the artist uses the element of art to create and effect
and to help convey the artist’s intent. These are pattern, contrast, balance, emphasis,
proportion movement, rhythm and unity.

The world experienced major changes in the 18th- 19th century technological
breakthrough, and social, political and environmental changes did not only affect
humanity but also affected art movements. Thus, modern art emerged.

7
Direction:
1. Examine carefully the pictures below.
2. Spot and encircle the elements of art found in picture A and do the same for
picture B.
3. Put a number (ex: 1,2,3..) to the encircled parts in each picture, and

the encircled parts below each picture.
