Design Procedure ‐ Box
1. Centreline 2D Model of the box is modelled in STAAD.
2. Supports at the ground has been modelled as springs with stiffness as 100 times the Safe bearing
capacity.
3. DL, SIDL, Temperature, Earth Pressure, Live Load Surcharge are applied on Model.
4. Live Load is run along the span in increments of 0.5m and dispersed as per IRC‐:112‐2011.
5. Braking Load is applied as 20% of net load present for each load live load case. In case where the cushion
over the top slab is greater than 0.6m braking Load has been dispensed.
6. ULS Basic, SLS Rare and SLS Quasi Permanent Combinations are made as per IRC:6‐2017
7. Design of various components (Top slab, bottom slab and wall) for shear and flexure have been carried out

EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE OVER BOX STRUCTURE

CALCULATING BRIDGE TEMPERATURE :

Maximum air shade temperature = 45 o
Minimum air shade temperature = 0o
Bridge Temperature = 32.5 o

Showing Temperature for overall for expansion / contraction

o
Temp = ± 32.5

NOTE: For Overall Bridge Temperature elongation/ contraction is considered only for the top slab, on the conservative side.
O
In STAAD Model, the temperature command is used for +/- 32.5 C for analysis of the structure

Design Calculation for the Lifting Arrangements:

Total Dead Weight of Box Culvert Precast Segement = 53.415 kN

Dead Load Reaction of Precast Segment at each support = 31.00 kN

Let's provide 2 number of 2 lgd - 16 mm dia link at each support

2
Cross sectional area of each link = 2.01 cm

Reaction on each link = 31 / 2 = 15.50 kN

Check for Permissible Tensile Stress in Shear

Direct shear stress on each Link = 15.50 x 100 / 2.01 = 771.1 kg/cm 2

Permissible tensile stress in shear in steel reinforcement of Fe - 500 grade:

2
= 2400 kg/cm
2
> 771.1 kg/cm Hence O.K.

Hence provide 2 number of 2 lgd - 16 mm dia link at each support

Provision of Anchorage Length

Inclination of lifting hook with vertical θ = 90 degree

= 1.5708 radians

Tensile stress developed at each leg due to lifting

= [(15.50 / 2) x 1000 / 2.01]
2
= 3856 kg/cm

Anchorage length required for a section developing for full tensile stress
= 40 Ф (for M30 grade of concrete
and Fe-500 grade of steel)

Hence anchorage length required to be provided for developed tensile stress in each leg
= 40 x 16 x 3,855.72 / (2400 x 2)
= 514.1 mm

Let's provide anchorage length of 600 mm in each leg
