Biogeochemical Cycles

Name: ______________________________________________ Grade and Section: ____________________

Most Essential Learning Competency:

Explain how materials cycle in an ecosystem (S8LT-IVi-24).

Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learners shall be able to:

1. determine which materials cycle in the ecosystem;

2. label the pathways of the biogeochemical cycles; and
3. appreciate the roles of organisms in the biogeochemical cycles.

Time Allotment: 2hours

Key Concepts

Cycling of Materials in the Ecosystem

The sun supplies the ecosystem with energy, chemical nutrients are essential to life on the
planet. Life, therefore, depends on the recycling of chemicals through pathways (Biology Concepts
and Connections, 2003).

Biogeochemical Cycles- are any of the naturally circulating pathways of the essential
substances needed by an organism to live.
The essential substances come in various forms and flow from the nonliving or abiotic
components to living or biotic components and back to the abiotic components again. These
substances that cycle in nature are classified into two: macronutrients and micronutrients.

1. Macronutrients- are the essential substances that are needed by an organism in large
quantities that includes water, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, and
calcium.
2. Micronutrients- are the essential elements that are needed by living things in minute
quantities that include zinc, iron, iodine, selenium, and molybdenum.

Some biogeochemical cycles are based on parts of the environment that act as reservoirs for
specific elements. In the water cycle, oxygen, and hydrogen are being used and reused as
molecules of water. Carbon and Nitrogen cycles, the gaseous form is readily available in nature.
Decomposers help in recycling these nutrients in the ecosystem, they convert some of the nutrients
into forms that producers can readily use.

The following are the nutrient cycling of materials:

The Water Cycle

Water circulates the environment – the oceans, land, air, and living organisms. This cycle
is the most known and simplest biogeochemical cycle. The cycling process involves evaporation,
transpiration, condensation, and precipitation. In the water cycle, the water stays as water and is
not needed to synthesize new molecules. The ocean
is the biggest reservoir of water that contains 97%
of Earth’s water. Solar energy is the main driving
force of the cycling of water. As the water vapor
cools, it condenses (change to liquid form) and
forms clouds before it goes back to Earth.
Precipitation is the water that comes back down to
the ground in the form of rain, snow, and hail. Most
of the water that evaporates come from the bodies
of water such as lakes, oceans, rivers, and stream.
Nonetheless, water can evaporate through plant
roots before evaporating from its leaves via
transpiration. Some water seeps downwards and Figure 1. Water Cycle
replenishes the groundwater and the excess Photo Source: https://biologydictionary.net/water-cycle/
eventually overflows into the oceans and the cycle
Figure 1. Water Cycle
continues.

The Nitrogen Cycle

Nitrogen comprises about 79% of the atmosphere. It is a vital part of proteins, vitamins,
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid), and RNA
(Ribonucleic Acid). Nevertheless, with oxygen and
carbon dioxide, neither plants nor animals can
readily use this gas. Plants need it in a form of
nitrate or ammonia that undergoes a process called
nitrogen fixation, wherein it combines with
hydrogen through the synthesis of a certain
bacteria. These bacteria thrive in water, soil and
have a symbiotic relationship with the plants such
as legumes and beans. Moreover, detrivores can
also produce ammonia via amino acids and urea
which can be found in decaying matter and waste.
On the other hand, nitrate forms when some
bacteria convert ammonia into nitrate in a process
called nitrification. Also, the denitrifiers or

process to convert soil nitrates to atmospheric
nitrogen to complete the cycle.

The Oxygen-Carbon Dioxide Cycle

Organisms use and produce gases in

photosynthesis and respiration. These gases flow
through plants and animals in the ecosystem in
cyclic pathways. The oxygen-carbon cycle shows
interdependence among organisms for these
important gases. Plants photosynthesize, it uses
carbon dioxide and produces oxygen which is
utilized by animals when they respire and in turn,
they produce carbon dioxide. Like animals, plants
undergo respiration, which uses oxygen and
produces carbon dioxide. Animals take in oxygen
from the atmosphere and give off carbon dioxide Figure 3. Oxygen – Carbon Cycle
during respiration that occurs day and night. Photo Source: https://www.pinterest.ph/pin
However, plants, give off oxygen and take in carbon
dioxide when they photosynthesize during the daytime. At night, the plants cannot
photosynthesize, they breathe just like animals they take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide.
Plants and Animals depend on each other for these essential gases as they are continuously used
through cyclic processes.
