Key Concepts
The sun supplies the ecosystem with energy, chemical nutrients are essential to life on the
planet. Life, therefore, depends on the recycling of chemicals through pathways (Biology Concepts
and Connections, 2003).
Biogeochemical Cycles- are any of the naturally circulating pathways of the essential
substances needed by an organism to live.
The essential substances come in various forms and flow from the nonliving or abiotic
components to living or biotic components and back to the abiotic components again. These
substances that cycle in nature are classified into two: macronutrients and micronutrients.
1. Macronutrients- are the essential substances that are needed by an organism in large
quantities that includes water, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur, and
calcium.
2. Micronutrients- are the essential elements that are needed by living things in minute
quantities that include zinc, iron, iodine, selenium, and molybdenum.
Some biogeochemical cycles are based on parts of the environment that act as reservoirs for
specific elements. In the water cycle, oxygen, and hydrogen are being used and reused as
molecules of water. Carbon and Nitrogen cycles, the gaseous form is readily available in nature.
Decomposers help in recycling these nutrients in the ecosystem, they convert some of the nutrients
into forms that producers can readily use.

I. Water Cycle
Water Cycle is the most known and simplest biogeochemical cycle. The Cycling
processes involves 1.___________, 2.__________, 3.__________, 4.______ (condensation,
evaporation, precipitation, radiation, transpiration). 5.______________ (Biomass, Solar
Energy, Thermal energy) is the main driving force of the cycling of water. As the 6. ______
(gases, water droplet, water vapor,) cools it condenses to form clouds and precipitation
follows where water that comes back down to the ground in the form of 7._________, 8.________,
and 9._______(fire, hail, rain, snow). However, plants evaporates from its leaves through 10.
________ (respiration, transpiration, oxidation). Some water seeps downwards and
replenishes the groundwater and overflows back to the ocean.
Guide Question: Write three sentences explanation for the given question.
How are the water, oxygen-carbon, and nitrogen cycles related to each other?
Guide Question: Write at least two sentences for your explanation of the given question.
Reflection: Write at least five sentences for your explanation of the given question.
As a student, what is your contribution to the environment to continue the flow of nutrients in
the ecosystem?
