MUSIC MINISTRY

GUIDELINES
BASIC PHILOSOPHY:
1. This Church is directed in its selection and
the performance of songs and instrumental
music by its Head, the Lord Jesus Christ,
through the Holy Scriptures – notably
Ephesians 5:18-20 and Colossians 3:16.
2. The pastors oversee all aspects of the music
ministry of the Church, the senior pastor
having the ultimate oversight thereof.
3. The senior pastor may appoint a Music
Coordinator to execute the directions and
requirements given by the pastors.
4. The Music Coordinator shall exercise
general oversight of the musicians, choir,
song leaders, as well as the organization of
the music for the meetings of the church.
5. The Music Coordinator shall-communicate
on a weekly basis with the pastors to plan
“orders of service” and any other matters
related to music in the Church.
6. The song leaders, choirmasters, and
musicians shall work with the Music

1
Coordinator to help promote the music
ministry of the church by engaging other
members to present special music.
7. Special music should only be sung or played
if those involved are fully prepared.

8. All special music, whether sung or played,

must conform to the standards set forth in
the Word of God as expressed from time to
time from the pulpit. Any questionable or
“borderline” music or lyrics must first be
adjudicated by the Music Coordinate and/or
the senior pastor before any decision is
made to proceed.

9. Those presenting special music should

practice and coordinate with the sound
system operators in order to calibrate the
sound system.

10. The pastors and other preachers shall have

liberty to make changes to the “order of
service” and the hymn selections when they
are preaching and/or leading the meeting.

SONG-LEADER GUIDELINES:
1. Spend time each week specifically praying
for the “song service” will lead.

2
2. Notify the Music Coordinator prior to a
meeting if you find yourself unable to fulfill
your duties.
3. Be familiar with song selections prior to a
meeting – arrive at least 15 minutes before
the meeting begins to review and/or practice
the congregational hymns with the pianist.
4. Familiarize those who will be ministering
special music with the “order of service”.
5. Check with the sound system operator to
ensure microphones are set up and ready for
any special music.
6. Start the “song service” on time (unless
otherwise directed by a pastor or the
preacher).
7. Strive to be enthusiastic and joyful, and
motivate the congregation to sing well.

8. Lead! Lead first and foremost with your

voice (especially to commence each verse or
to hold out a note), but also with your arms
or hands.
9. Introduce some variety from time to time –
stay out of the ruts! For example:
a. Have men and women sing alternate
verses.

3
b. Sing a verse a cappella – inform the
musicians ahead of time; no need to
announce it.
c. Skip a refrain when it fits the tune.
d. Have the congregation hum through
a verse.
10. Refrain from too much talking or jesting.
You are not the preacher. Do not berate the
congregation (rather, change the song if the
people are having difficulty in singing).
11. When calling for “favorites” from the
congregation, strive to choose different
people (in the course of time).

12. Watch the pastor on the platform for any

changes – such as skipping a verse of the
hymn being sung.

13. Remember, preaching is paramount – as is

also the time (particularly on a Sunday
morning, when guests and other ongoing
ministries must be considered).

14. Remain on platform until the singing portion

of the meeting is finished.

15. At the conclusion of the preaching, move to

the front row. The preacher/preacher will

4
call you to the platform when needed. Keep
an eye on the preacher, and have a song
ready to announce and sing.

16. At the end of the meeting, remove

completed “order of service” sheets and
straighten up the pulpit and platform area.

PIANIST GUIDELINES:
1. Spend time each week specifically praying
for the meeting and “song service” in which
you will play.

2. Notify the Music Coordinator prior to a

meeting if you find yourself unable to fulfill
your duties.

3. Be familiar with song selections prior to the

meeting – arrive at least 15 minutes before
the meeting begins to review and/or practice
the congregational hymns with the song-
leader.

4. Commence playing five minutes before the

meeting is scheduled to begin.

5
5. Strive to be enthusiastic and motivational in
the playing of the music.

6. Follow the leader (the song leader).

7. At the conclusion of the preaching, move to

the piano. The pastor/preacher will signal
when to commence playing. Play softly
when the pastor/preacher is speaking to the
congregation

8. At the end of the meeting, remove

completed “order of service” sheets and
straighten up the piano area.
