Albert Einstein was born in Germany on March 14, 1870. He attended elementary school in
Munich but he didn’t like it very much. He wasn’t a good reader, and spelling was difficult
for him. Albert Einstein didn’t learn to read until he was nine. Other students said young
Albert was unsociable. In fact, Albert Einstein found most school subjects boring. However,
he was passionate about maths and science. He left school at the age of fifteen.
In 1895, Einstein’s family moved to Switzerland and he began to study again. He finally
completed his studies in 1900.
Einstein was a scientific genius. By 1920, he was famous around the world. He won the Nobel
Prize for Physics in 1921.

Karate comes from the Japanese words ‘kara’ meaning ‘open’ and ‘te’ meaning ‘hand’. The
origins of karate can be traced back thousands of years to the island of Okinawa in Japan.
People who practise karate wear a special outfit – a white pair of loose-fitting trousers and a
jacket tied with a belt. The colour of the belts they wear shows their skill level although belt
colours often vary from one karate school to another. A white belt is usually used for people
who are just starting out, a black belt is for those with very high karate skills. Karate isn’t just
about breaking boards or being able to defend yourself. It’s also a great way to reduce stress
and build self-confidence.
