Control Valve Calibration (ABB Positioner)

This document provides instructions for calibrating an ABB positioner for a linear actuator through an automatic calibration process called "Auto adjust". The steps are to open drain valves before and after the control valve, access the positioner keys, select the auto adjust mode, start the auto adjust process, monitor status messages, verify calibration at setpoints once complete, close the positioner cover, and return the control valve to service while observing the response.

Control Valve Calibration (ABB Positioner)

 Open the drain valves before and after the control valve.
 Open the front cover of the positioner to access the positioner keys.

For Linear Actuators

 Press the “MODE” key until “ADJ_LIN” is displayed.
 Press “MODE” key and hold down until the countdown ends.
 Release “MODE”; this starts Auto adjust (Auto Calibration).
 It will take almost 5 minutes to complete the auto calibration step
depending upon actuator.

 While Auto adjust is running, the control loop symbol flashes in the display,
and the current state of Auto adjust is indicated with the messages listed
below.

RUN Auto adjust is running

CALC_ERR Error during plausibility check.
COMPLETE Auto adjust completed successfully
BREAK Auto adjust has been stopped by the operator. This can be done
locally by pressing ENTER
OUTOFRNG Sensor range of the positioner has been exceeded; Auto adjust
was stopped.
NO_SCALE End positions have not yet been determined; therefore, partial
Auto adjust cannot be run.
RNG_ERR Less than 10% of the sensor range is used.
TIMEOUT Timeout. The control parameters could not be determined within
200 seconds. Auto adjust was stopped.
SPR_ERR The actual spring action does not match the configured direction

 Once Auto adjust has finished running without encountering any errors,
the device displays the message "RUN" in the bottom line and a code
number in the top line, indicating the step that is currently being executed:
10 Air is completely evacuated from actuator (OUT1). The fully
evacuated position is saved.
20 Air is completely ventilated from actuator (OUT1). The fully
ventilated position is saved.
30 Stroke time determination is prepared.
31 Actuator travels from 100 % to 0 %, stroke time is measured and
saved.
32 Actuator travels from 0 % to 100 %, stroke time is measured and
saved.
40 – 49 Tolerance band is determined and saved (minimum value). PD
parameters for fast control < tolerance band is determined and
saved.
50 - 59 PID parameters for precise control of control deviation <
tolerance band is determined and saved.
200 Auto adjust is complete.
 Then give the positioner remote command of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and
100% from DCS. Verify its actual position & feedback position on DCS.
 Then close the front cover of the positioner.
 Ask the operator to close the drain valves and take the control valve back
in service.
 Observe the control valve response in auto mode for 2, 3 minutes.
