3. A surface condenser receives 2000kg of steam per hour which is 0.9 dry. The condenser
vacuum is 70 cm of Hg when barometer reads 75 cm of Hg. The temperature of hot well
is 270C while the mean condenser temperature is 350C. Cooling water gets heated from
170C to 320C. determine
a) Condenser efficiency
b) Vacuum efficiency
c) Quantity of cooling water required per hour
4. How the Boiler efficiency is defined? Give the construction and working of the Babcock
and Wilcox boiler?
5. How will you classify condensers? In what respect a jet condenser differs from a surface
condenser?
6. The following data were obtained from the test of a surface condenser
i) Condenser vacuum=711 mm of Hg
ii) Hot well temperature= 320C
iii) Inlet temperature of cooling water=120C
iv) Outlet temperature of cooling water=280C
v) Barometric reading=760 mm of Hg

Mass of condensate = 1200 kg/h
