What are facilities
• Fixed assets like building structures and inanimate resources that support the
operations of a given activity.
• Facilities put together with humans, $ and/or materials, energy result in the activity

Importance of Facilities Planning
• The size of the investment in new facilities each year.
Ex: At US since 1955, 8 % of the gross national product
(GNP) has been spent on new facilities
• Effective facilities planning can reduce manufacturing costs
(material handling, energy, etc.) & increase the productivity by
eliminating all activities that are unnecessary and waste.
Applications
• Manufacturing
• Healthcare
• Service
• Restaurants
• Banks
• Airports
• Entertainment
• Logistics and Distribution
• Ports/Terminals
• Distribution Centers
Examples of Facilities

Production: any discrete parts or process industry facilities

Health care: hospitals, clinics, rehab. centers, nursing home
Education: schools, colleges, day care centers, libraries
Food: restaurants, fast-food places, banquet halls
Commercial/Residential: shopping malls, office buildings,
banks, houses, hotels, motels
Government/Public Services: court house, post office,
Military: barracks, control rooms
Transportation: airports, train stations, bus terminals
Public assembly: stadium, auditoriums, theaters
Religious: mousques, temples, chapels, churches
Facilities Location and Design
• Location: placement of a facility with respect to customers, suppliers
and other related facilities.
• Design:
1. Facility systems: lighting, electrical, communication, safety and sanitation
systems
2. Layout: equipment, machinery, and furnishings
3. Handling system: the mechanisms needed to satisfy the required facility
interactions.

Agenda
• Facilities Planning
• Objectives
• Planning Process
• Cost of Design Changes
• Manufacturing Process Questions
Facilities Planning Objectives
• Well Organizing • Easy to monitor/ control
• Easy Material Flow/Movement • Reduce costs
• Easy to Manage • Better customer service
• Safe Facilities (Safety) • Better utilization of resources
• Reduce transportation time • Faster and quicker response
• Simplicity / Easy to construct • Better Location
• Quick response to product changes
(Agility- Agile facilities)
Objectives of Facilities Planning

• Improve customer satisfaction: by being easy to do

business with and meeting the customer needs.
• Maximize speed for quick customer response.
• Reduce costs and increase the profitability.
• Effectively utilize people, equipment, space and
energy.
Continue:
• Be adaptable and promote easy of maintenance.
• Provide for employee safety and job satisfaction.
• Etc..
Facilities Planning Objectives

• Sustainability
• Economical
• Social
• Environmental
Facilities Planning Process
1. Define the problem:
Define the objective of the facility: specify the product or service to
be provided (including amounts).
Specify the primary (ex: manufacturing) and support (ex:
maintenance) activities to be performed in accomplishing the
objective. The operations, equipment, material flows and personnel
should be specified.
Continue:
2. Analyze the problem:
Determine the interrelationships among all activities, both quantitative and qualitative relationships
should be defined.
3. Determine the space requirements for all activities: consider all equipment, material and
personnel requirements.
Continue:
4. Generate alternative facilities plans. They should include both alternative locations and
alternative designs for the facility.
5. Evaluate the alternatives.
6. Select the prefered design.
7. Implement the design.
The Facilities Planning Process:
General and Manufacturing Process
The Facilities Planning Process: Hospital Facilities
Possible Changes at Different Phases
• Planning
• Designing
• Building/ Construction
• Installing Equipment
• Commissioning / Operating
The facilities planning process
of a manufacturing facility:
1. Define the products to be
manufactured
2. Specify the required manufacturing
processes and related activities.
3. Determine the interrelationship among
all activities.
4. Determine the space requirements for
all activities.
Continue:
5. Generate alternative facilities plans.
6. Evaluate the alternative facilities plans.
7. Select the preferred facilities plan.
8. Implement the facilities plan.
9. Maintain and adapt the facilities plan.
10.Update the products to be
manufactured.
Before generating alternative facility plans for
manufacturing we should answer:
1. What is to be produced?
2. How are the products to be produced?
3. When are the products to be produced?
4. How much of each product will be produced?
5. For how long will the products to be produced?
6. Where are the products will be produced?
