To get acquainted with the CNC Milling Machine and basic interface of the CNC
programming software finally, produce a predesigned work-piece through the process.
Theory:
CNC turning is a manufacturing method in which material bars are held in a chuck and
rotated while a cutter is applied to the work piece to remove material until the required
form is attained. As the desired shape is achieved through the removal of material, it is
also known as subtraction machining. A lathe is a machine tool that spins a workpiece on
its axis to execute operations like cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation using
tools that are applied to the work piece to create an object with symmetry around an axis
of rotation. Due to its simplicity of configuration, operation, repeatability, and precision,
computer numerical controlled (CNC) lathes are increasingly replacing traditional
industrial lathes. The machine is controlled electronically using a computer menu-style
interface, which allows the program to be edited and presented at the machine, as well
as a simulated view of the operation.
Apparatus:
Procedure:
1. We start with adjusting the work-piece with chuck using a T-shaped vice. The work-
piece should be checked manually whether it is properly fixed with the chuck. The
other side of the work-piece should be aligned with the thimble attached to the
tailstock.
2. Then we open the NC programming software and reset the whole machine to start
fresh.
3. The external lid is turned down and the controllers are set to OFF switch.
4. Next, we turn the attached screw to forward direction and slowly rotate the RPM
screw in the anti-clockwise direction to allow the headstock to start rotating along
with the work-piece.
5. We slowly smoothen the outer edge of our work-piece using the X-axis movement.
The whole piece should be perfectly round and smooth by the end of this step.
6. Now we have to slowly rotate the RPM screw in a clockwise direction. This will
gradually halt the turning process, finally stopping the machine.
7. Now we measure the diameter of our work-piece and make necessary
observations regarding the shape of our final product and following turning
operations. If required, the work-piece is marked with pencil or pen for ease of
work.
8. Then, steps 2,3 and 4 are repeated and necessary turning operations are carried
out.
9. Finally after obtaining the desired shape, we carefully repeat step 6.
10. Now the T-shaped vice is used to loosen the product from the chuck.
Discussion:
CNC Lathe Machine gives us an important insight to the industrial manufacturing process
of specifically designed solids that we use on a commercial basis. The non-traditional
manufacturing process that is involved here allows us to shape, cut, sand or deform work-
pieces (wooden or metal) to produce precise symmetric shapes. The software aided
modern turning operations leave no room for error, which in turn reduces waste and
hazardous environment for industrial workers. Our lab work provided helpful experience
to understand the whole process and generated awareness about potential risk factors.
Precautions should be taken while attaching the work-piece with a chuck. In case of any
emergency, the RED reset button should be pushed.
