Typhoon Report
Typhoon Report
“TYPHOON”, originating from the Chinese tai (strong) and fung (wind), is the term
used to describe a tropical cyclone in Western Pacific Ocean (Holden and Jacobson,
2012).
Typhoon disaster is a natural disaster that refers to the formation of tropical and
subtropical ocean cyclonic eddies in a wide range of activities with strong wind,
rainstorm, storm tide and waves, which may cause damage to human life and
properties.
TROPICAL CYCLONE
A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure
center, a closed low- level atmospheric circulation, strong winds and a spiral
arrangement of thunderstorm that produce heavy rain and squalls. Depending on its
location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by different names, including
hurricane.
The formation of typhoons is a natural phenomenon. The earth uses it to attain
balance or equilibrium. Transferring energy from the equator to older parts of the earth.
Various names call them. In the Northwest Pacific, we call them typhoons. In the Indian
Ocean and southwest Pacific, they’re called cyclones. And in the Atlantic, they’re called
hurricanes. They are often found to form within the Intertropical Convergence Zone or
the ITCZ.
PREPARATION OF THE TYPHOON
Ensuring a safe stay at home
Having a suitable stock of necessities
Check evacuation routes
Make reinforcement to prevent damage
Ensure proper drainage
Fasten objects that may be blown away
CAUSES OF TYPHOON
Typhoons are a mature tropical system. High-energy cosmic neutrinos are hitting on
earth. Neutrinos are elementary particles like electrons but with no charge and almost
no mass. They can pass through and remain unaffected by everything. The source of
these super high-energy cosmic neutrinos that come from billions of light-years away is
more of a mystery. They pass at incredible speeds through certain substances they can
polarize like water. Then It can create typhoons with warm water.
Some particular ingredients or factors came together to make typhoons. They are given
below.
Warm water: The typhoon’s first ingredient is warm water, typically needed at about 27
degrees Celsius or about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The warmer it gets, the more latent
heat will go into the system, and the stronger it will be a tropical storm. So, in short, the
water temperature is a pretty important aspect of these tropical systems.
Cyclone formation: Another thing needed is a cyclonic circulation at the storm’s base.
It’s pretty impossible to have a cyclonic storm without that low-level circulation. There
are several ways to do this, most often a tropical wave forming around the Intertropical
Convergence Zone.
EFFECT OF TYPHOON
1.Strong winds. This is one of the most devastating and the most consistent negative
effect of a typhoon. Strong winds can easily cause buildings to collapse, as well as
destroying roads and infrastructure. Strong wind could also damage agriculture by
blowing away seeds and plants, making the crops unable to grow.
2. Salty Water. Since typhoon occurs on ocean bodies and have very strong winds.
Typhoon often bring salty sea water that can harm the crops of the farmlands. This can
also cause leakage of electricity as salt water is really conductive.
3. Waves. Strong waves will be created by a typhoon when it strikes. The waves could
cause shipwrecks, and even damage land because the waves could reach as high 20
meters. This could also cause shoreline erosion because the waves would wash away
the nutrients in the soil.
4. Torrential rain. Large amounts of precipitation will follow with the typhoon. This
could cause flooding, the damaging of crops, and many more.
5. Flood. This effect is caused by the torrential rainfall, which occurs as a direct result of
the typhoon itself. As mentioned earlier, flooding will ruin crop fields, collapse small
buildings, and can even take lives.
6. Landslides. Landslides are caused by the precipitation that is present a typhoon hits
an area. Landslide occur when large amounts of water has settled on mountain tops.
The intense pressure of the water pressing down, causes soil and rock to slide off from
where they are.
7. Pests and Epidemic disease. Diseases are pests are often found after floods and
further damage crops. This is another very devastating effect that threatens the lives of
the people in typhoon damaged areas. Diseases like cholera run rampant because of
the perfect conditions of spreading diseases. People specially in poorer areas cannot rid
the disease because of the lack of the medical support. Furthermore, the amount of
money that has to be put into buying a cure can end up causing hundreds of thousands
of dollars.
What to do BEFORE a Typhoon
1. Listen to weather updates and advisories.
2. Keep watch for warnings and plan regarding evacuation in your community.
3. Check your house's condition and make necessary repairs.
4. Prepare a survival kit (emergency items such as canned goods, biscuits, water,
and first aid kits).
5. Keep your survival kit in an area where you can easily get it in case of
emergency.
6. Bring your pets and livestock in the designated evacuation area for animals, if
not, keep them in a safe place.
7. Evacuate immediately once asked by the authorities to do so.
