roof of an electric train, tram or electric bus to collect power through contact with an
overhead line. By contrast, battery electric buses and trains are charged at charging
stations.
14
2. VCB (Vacuum Circuit Breaker): A vacuum circuit breaker is used for switching as
well as protection of the connected equipment, so they have to be very fast-acting to
ensure that during any fault the breaker automatically trips before the fault current can
cause damage to the equipment. A vacuum circuit breaker is used for switching as well
as protection of the connected equipment, so they have to be very fast-acting to ensure
that during any fault the breaker automatically trips before the fault current can cause
damage to the equipment.
3. SURGE ARRESTOR: A surge arrester works by diverting the extra voltage into the
earth wire, rather than flowing through the electronic devices, while at the same time
allowing the normal voltage to continue along its path.
7. EGS (Earthing Ground System): Earth grounding systems help carry unexpected
electrical charges from other sources away safely. For example, lightning strikes can
energize components in houses. The earth grounding system can sometimes safely
dissipate electricity from lightning.

11. HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM
• Pantograph
• Vacuum Circuit Breaker (CRRC scope)
• Emergency Ground Switch
• AC Arrestor
• Main Transformer
• C/I Box
• Traction Motor
a. Pantograph:
A pantograph (or "pan" or "panto") is an apparatus mounted on the roof of an electric train,
tram or electric bus to collect power through contact with an overhead line. By contrast, battery
electric buses and trains are charged at charging stations.
d. AC Arrestor
The AC Arrestor is a device that protects the train mounted equipment from excessive high
voltage transient conditions. Lightning strikes on the 25kV line usually causes these transient
conditions.
19
When a transient condition occurs, the AC Arrestor quickly becomes a low resistance path to
earth and the energy of the transient spike is absorbed. Once the spike is absorbed the AC
Arrestor becomes a high resistance path to earth.
e. Main Transformer
The function of the Main Transformer is to reduce the 25 kV line voltage to approximately 960
V AC (Two Secondary windings) and 373 V AC (Tertiary Winding). The reduction in the
supply Voltage is desired because, Insulation distance and cable size is reduced within
equipment boxes. It is easier to control the traction power using semi-conductor elements. The
Main Transformer consists of one primary winding which is connected to the 25kV line. Two
secondary windings which are connected to the C/I Box. A secondary winding output provides
the power supply for a bogie. One tertiary winding output to provide power to the Auxiliary
Power Supply System.
g. Traction Motor
The C/I box has two independent output circuits, one for each set of traction motors mounted
on a bogie. The C/I output voltage varies from 0 volt to 1400 volt, and the C/I output frequency
0 to 80 Hz. By having two independent output circuits, the control of each set of traction motors
is also independent. This allows failed bogie circuits to be isolated without effecting the good
bogie circuit, Wheel slip slide control is bogie controlled. The output of the C/I box is
connected to the traction motors. The traction motors are mounted onto the bogie frame and
provide the necessary torque to move the train. This torque is applied to each wheel set in the
motor car via an axle mounted gearbox, which is connected to the traction motor via a coupling.
20
12. HVAC
The Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) system is used for heating, cooling
and ventilation of the saloon area as well as cab area.
The HVAC has a capacity of 48kW. It maintains the temperature of 25°C and 60% relative
humidity. During winters it maintain the temperature of 18°C and 60% relative humidity.
The HVAC has a heating coil of 8kW. It has a sight glass to check the flow of refrigerant,
R707C.
• The primary function of the HVAC unit is to achieve and maintain acceptable indoor climate
and air quality for the passengers.
• Secondary functions are:
• To protect the passengers from smoke in case of smoke outside the train, and
• To secure the CO2 levels inside the train if auxiliary power fails.
There are 2 HVAC ducts in Noida metro working on the principle of simple refrigeration cycle.
Whole HVAC system is controlled by the metro pilot. He fixes the desired temperature and
cooling/heating takes place. Once the interior temperature reaches that value it automatically
turned to the ventilation mode.
The RAT and SAT are used to measure the temperature if return and supply air.
21
13. BRAKING SYSTEM
The brake commands are entered into the main conversion equipment via trainline.
During braking, regenerative brake effort is carried out according to the brake demand from
master controller, weight information, wheel diameter information and speed.
I) The converter section carries out the same controls as for powering control. The converter
section performs the inverter mode operation so that DC power of the DC middle circuit can
be converted to the AC power.
ii) The inverter section performs converter mode operation so that the power generated by the
traction motor can be converted to the DC middle circuit. The controls are as follows.
• Vector control of the traction motor
• Constant-torque control (VVVF region)
• Characteristic control (CVVF region)
22
14. DOORS
A door in a train is a panel or barrier, usually hinged or sliding, that is used to cover an opening
in a train. Exterior doors are doorways that allow entrance or exit from a train.
There are three types of exterior doors available in RS2:
• Cab or driver’s door
• Passenger door
• Detrainment door
CAB DOORS
• The function of the cab or driver’s door is to provide access to the cab for the driver.
Only DT car is equipped with two cab doors.
PASSENGER DOOR
• The function of the passenger door is to prevent passengers from entering or leaving the train.
• Each car has 8 passenger doors
• Each door consists of two door leaves
• Sliding externally on the car body wall
• Electrically operated
DETRAINMENT DOOR
• The function of the detrainment door is to provide evacuation of passengers and crew to track
in case of emergency.
• When detrainment door opens it becomes an emergency ramp from cab floor level down to
track level.
• The detrainment door is bolted into the cab structure.
• The door is located in the front of the cab.
• Free opening width 750 mm.
• Free opening height 1900 mm.
23
15. POWER SUPPLY IN METRO
The purpose of the traction power supply is to provide electrical power to the train propulsion
equipment, which in turn move the train. There are three types of traction system:
• AC: Generally used for high voltage traction supply in kV and through OCS.
• DC: Low voltage traction supply up to 3kV
• Running Rails as return for OCS and 3rd rail.
24
For metro rail transit system (MRTS) an un-interrupted power supply is essential. Noida Metro
Rail Corporation (NMRC) receives high voltage supply at 132kV from PVVNL power supply
authorities at RSS through underground cables.
Voltage Level Traction System in NMRC:
Incoming: 132kV AC
For Traction: 25kV AC
For Auxiliary loop: 33kV AC
For Station Utilization: 415V AC

26
Figure17: Traction Power Supply: Feeding Post
There are three sections in NMRC sub – station namely Receiving Sub Station (RSS), Traction
Sub Station (TSS), Auxiliary main substation (ASS).
Since RSS contain most of the major equipment are called Receiving Substation.
Currently NMRC receives power supply from two Receiving Sub Stations (RSS) located at
Sector 148 and Sector 83, each having a capacity of 6 MW to meet all the power requirements
for running the entire metro system, including traction (power required to run the trains).
