Variation
• Variation problems involve fairly simple relationships or
formulas, involving one variable being equal to one term.
Here follows the most common kinds of variation.
• The constant of variation in a direct variation is the
constant (unchanged) ratio of two variable quantities. In the
following equation y varies directly with x, and k is called
the constant of variation:
y=kx
• Another form of variation is the inverse variation which
works when there is a relationship between two variables in
which the product is a constant. When one variable
increases the other decreases in proportion so that the
product is unchanged.
• If y is inversely proportional to x and k is a constant, the
equation is of the form:
k
y= x

Types of Variation
• Direct Variation: y varies directly as x. As x increases, y
also increases. As x decreases, y also decreases.
y=kx
• Inverse Variation: y varies inversely as x. As x increases, y
decreases. As x decreases, y increases. The product of x
and y is always constant.
k
y= x

• Joint Variation: z varies jointly as x and y. As x and y

increases, z also increases. As x and y decrease, z also
decreases.
z = kxy
 Combined variation is just the combination of direct and
inverse proportionality. If a variable has a combined
proportionality with two other variables, then it has a
direct proportion with one and an inverse proportion with
the other.
 Here, y varies directly with x and inversely with z.
kx
y= z

2. y varies _______as x. As x increases, y also increases. As
x decreases, y also decreases.
3. z varies _______as x and y. As x and y increases, z also
increases. As x and y decrease, z also decreases.
4. y varies _______as x. As x increases, y decreases. As x
decreases, y increases. The product of x and y is always
constant.
5. Another form of variation where, y varies directly
with x and inversely with z.
