How Is Communication Affected by Media and Information
With the insurgence advancement of media and information the aspect of communication has
come to its greatest spectrum of evolution across numbers of entities. The dependency of
communication towards media and information creates a vital role in transforming or say modifying the
mode, process, and features of communication. To this extent, it is comprehensible that communication
is solely affected by media and information in a way that can be distinguish as both negative and
positive implications depending on the effect of it towards the realm of communication. There are
various ways that both media and information can affect communication.
In terms of media, as the most accessible way of any individual of the modern age to generate a
communication in cyberspace or any means. Media from the dictionary can either be a platform which
differs from broadcasting, publishing, and the internet and is described as the main means of
communication. In today’s time media defines communication and it has the means to deliver messages
through any number of channels including text messaging, social media, video conferencing, etc. In this
sense, media which requires the internet has the potential to generate miscommunication or failure of
communication for a fact that there is barrier of communication that may arise when the
communication is currently happening through text, chat, or video conferencing. Communication might
be ineffective if the mode of transmission is done through the use of internet, and utilization of
electricity because there are times that internet is lost or inaccessible same as through with the
electricity which sometimes has power interruption. Various factors to look into when communication is
affected by media in a negative way some of this factor is illiteracy about the use of media platforms,
barrier of communication, noise, etc. On the other hand, in a positive perspective media affects
communication in a sense that it directly generates a communication between people with distant
locations, and it is mostly accessible to all most especially that many people are already aware of the use
of particular platforms of media. If barrier of communication is not a problem, then the communication
process can go smoothly as desire by both the sender and receiver.
In summary, Media and Information both affects the communication aspect. Yet, implications
can either be a positive or negative one depending on its effect towards the communication. That is why
it is always important to be knowledgeable about the effective communication process. It is also a must
that every communicator knows the effect of both media and information towards the effectiveness of
communication.
How did Facebook affect the quantity and quality of information available to people? Is it a good thing
or a bad thing?
Facebook is one of the most ubiquitous social media platforms that up to this date attains the
highest number of uses. According to Statista (2022) there are currently 4.59 billion social media users
across the globe and from that quantity, there are 2.94 billion users who are fond of using Facebook.
This clearly shows that Facebook is very prevalent compared to other platforms. In line with this, base
on empirical evidence, I can say that Facebook really affects the quantity and quality of information both
in a good way and bad way.
It is given that most of the people who are using Facebook has the right to share everything they
want to share whether it’s an article, a photo, or a video. Facebook affects the quality of information in a
way that most of the time fake news or illegitimate information are circulating online, which lacks of
verification and assessment, and the sad thing is that it tends to convey and make people believe that it
is real wherein fact it is fake. Numbers of information are provided yet people are having hard time
identifying which source of information can really be trusted. Indeed, the quantity of information is
considerably high because Facebook is a public platform and anybody can impart and spare their stand
or opinion in a particular issue, topic, discussion, or situation.
It can either be a good thing or a bad thing. It is a good thing because we are drowning of
information because there are lots of sources of information across this particular social media platform,
we can have basis as many as we want, however, the bad thing is we are having difficulties in identifying
which information to trust and which information to reject. The bottom line is it can be good or bad,
depending on a person’s ability to sort out and assess the shared information to him or her.
