Bio Washing Powders Cala

The document provides information about a CALA (Competency and Learning Assessment) for Form 4 biology students on testing for the presence of enzymes in biological washing powders. The 30-point assessment has two parts: Part A involves answering multiple choice questions about enzymes and testing for starch. Part B requires students to perform an experiment involving washing powder, starch and iodine solutions, record observations, and draw a conclusion. The assessment evaluates students' understanding of industrial enzyme applications, experimental procedures, data recording and analysis skills.

LEARNING AREA: BIOLOGY

LEVEL: FORM 4

CALA TYPE: PRACTICAL, PEN AND PAPER

TOPIC: ENZYMES

SUBTOPIC: INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION OF ENZYMES

CALA TITLE:

Testing for presence of enzymes in biological washing powders.

COMPETENCES:

Research, Data recording, Experimenting

DIMENSIONS TO BE ASSESSED:

Researching, Data Recording, Experimentation

OBJECTIVES TO BE ACHIEVED

-improve learners’ understanding of the subject of enzymes

-help learners in performing experiments and recording observation

-teach learners in analysing results and passing conclusion

CALA CONTEXT:

Biological washing powders contain enzymes. You are required to investigate the presence of
enzymes that digest starch in washing powder.
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE:

PART A

a) Describe the role of enzymes in biological washing powders [3]

b) Name any three enzymes in biological washing powders [3]
c) Name and summarise the procedure used to test for the presence of starch [4]
d) Name the enzyme that digests starch [1]

PART B

a) Carry out the following procedure

Prepare a solution by mixing a little washing powder with water. Add some starch into two
test tubes. To one test tube add water. To the other test tube add the washing powder solution
instead of water. Add a few drops of iodine solution to both tubes and mix. [8]

b) Observe and record in a table the colours of the solutions in each test tube
(i) Soon after adding iodine
(ii) After leaving the test tubes for three hours [8]
c) Use your observations to explain whether there is the enzyme or not in the washing
powder [3]

The CALA will be marked out of 30.
