Group 2 - Pcog Post Lab Activity 11 (Midterms)

This document discusses an activity to identify tannins in different plant samples. Tannins are polyphenols found in many plants that are used for tanning leather. The activity aims to familiarize students with tannin identification tests and examine the characteristics of plants containing tannins. Different tests are performed on samples like guava leaves and tannic acid to identify tannins, showing results like color changes. Galls, abnormal plant growths caused by insects, are also discussed. The conclusion states that identifying tannins in plants is important for medical and pharmaceutical applications and this activity helps pharmacists test for tannins.

Identification of Tannins
in Different Plant Samples

BAISAC, BADOC, CAÑADA, ESPAÑOL

Objectives
I
To identify tannins from different plant
samples.

II
To familiarize and execute different
identification tests for tannins.

III To examine and identify the different

characteristics of plants containing
tannin.
INTRODUCTION
The name ‘tannin’ is derived from the French ‘tanin’ (tanning substance).
Tannins (commonly referred to as tannic acid) are water-soluble
polyphenols that are present in many plant foods that can be found in fruit,
wood, and bark of trees, and many types of wild herbs and plants or from
sustainable agriculture and forestry. The term ‘tannin’ was first used by
Seguin in 1796 to denote substances which have the ability to combine
with animal hides to convert them into leather which is known as tanning of
the hide. Their traditional use for leather has been doubled for centuries in
the popular medical and pharmacological lore by their use to cure or
alleviate a variety of infections and diseases. In modern researchers, these
materials possess great potential for use in modern medicine and
pharmacy. This activity will serve as an introduction to tannins based on
their structures, basic chemistry process, and pharmaceutical uses by
conducting identification tests using different samples.

List the various galls known, the insect
producing each, and the plant on which each is
produced.
Galls are abnormal growths that can arise in all parts of a plant resulting from the work
of usually immature insects mites, nematodes, fungi, bacteria and viruses. In a way,
they are basically "plant tumors."

Swollen stem galls - Cynipid gall wasp (Andricus spectabilis ) - canyon live oak
(Quercus chrysolepis)
Crimson erineum gall - gall mites (Eriophydae)- sugar maple
Elm finger gall - mites (Aceria ulmi) - American elm and other elm
Blister galls-Gall midges (Cecidomyiidae)-hackberry leaves
Poplar Petriole gall- aphiol (Pemphigus populitransversus) - poplar (Pop ulus)
Fruit galls, oak apple gall- gall wasp (Biorrhiea pallida) - Apple (Malus domestica)

CONCLUSION
Tannins are medicinally significant due to their properties. Many studies have been conducted on a
variety of tannins derived from a wide variety of plants as a treatment for various diseases. Some
studies on the possibility of using tannin for other medical applications. Medical and pharmaceutical
applications are one of the more interesting and active fields of research at present for the evaluation
of tannins.
In this activity, we were able to perform the identification of tannins in different sample namely;
guava leaves, Tannin acid NF, albumin, gelatin, and starch. This sample underwent the national
formulary identification test for tannic acid. The guava sample resulted in bluish-black color, indicating
that the sample contains tannins. In procedure b, the ferric chloride resulted in bluish-black color,
indicating that it contain tannic acid. For the test of ferric chloride in albumin, gelatin, and starch, the
results are the change of light brown solution becoming much lighter, clumpy brown precipitate and
cloudy coffee-colored solution, and white precipitate respectively, which are testing the contents of
tannins, hence all of them are expected to test positive yet albumin did not produce a precipitate.
This laboratory experiment is very beneficial for us as future pharmacist as we test and identify the
presence of tannins in different plant samples towards the development and manufacture of drugs.
