Life of Pi Reflection
The story is themed around many things such as storytelling, religious belief and
the will to live. It is obvious to see the main theme of having a will to live due to the fact that the
story is based around Piscine Molitor Patel’s (Pi) will to live that got him through the many
months at sea. As he struggles to survive it’s visible to see that no one just accepts their fate, Pi’s
gives up his life as a vegetarian to eat fish, Orange Juice, the peaceful orangutan, fights
ferociously against the hyena. Even the severely wounded zebra battles to stay alive; his slow,
painful struggle vividly illustrates the sheer strength of his life force. The Life of Pi is framed
around the Author’s, Yann Martel, narration of his learning of Pi’s story. Inside the framework
of Martel’s narration is the story of Pi’s journey. What is learned about Pi’s life, may not be fully
accurate, as the full account of what Pi went through is too horrid to study directly, however Pi
recounts what he went through by directing what he went through into human-like animals. We
see the aspects of religious beliefs primarily in the beginning where it is learned how Pi practices
3 religions - Catholicism, Hinduism and Islam. Life of Pi itself starts off with a narration from an
old man in Pondicherry who tells the narrator, “I have a story that will make you believe in
God.” Aswell we learn that Pi, an extraordinarily religious boy, admires his atheist teacher as
The story starts off with adult Piscine Molitor Patel (Pi) describing his life growing up,
his father worked as a zookeeper and Pi would wake up to the sounds of the zoo. Pi also
describes his life through college, particularly his research on three-toed sloths for his zoology
thesis. The storyline then jumps to the start of his recovery in Mexico, many people would come
visit his room to hear his story and when he was finally able to go to Canada, he was offended
when a waiter made a comment about him using his fingers. Later on the story gives an inside on
where Pi’s name comes from- a swimming pool. When describing Pi’s school life, the story
includes his take on religion, even talking about how Pi is Catholic, Hindu and Islamic. His
favorite teacher however is atheist and while he doesn’t hate atheists he does hate agnostics.
While most of the book seems to be in the narrative of Pi, there are a few chapters that are from
the point of view of the author, giving little tidbits of Pi’s present life. Mentioning his cooking
