1 (Mech) Engines For Caterpillar Built Machines

1 Main bearing cap bolts


1.Apply clean engine oil to the threads of the main bearing cap bolts.
2.Torque for the main bearing cap bolts. ... 80 N·m (59 lb ft)
3.Tighten the bolts for the main bearing cap for an additional 90 degrees
Note: Ensure that the crankshaft can rotate freely.

The end play of a new crankshaft ... 0.1 to 0.41 mm (0.00394 to 0.01614 inch)

2 Clearance between the bearing shell and the main bearing journals ... 0.026 to 0.084 mm
3 Piston Cooling Jet

4 Connecting Rod
1.Tighten setscrews for the connecting rod again to the following torque. 40 N·m
2.Tighten the setscrews for the connecting rod for an additional 120 degrees

Bearing Clearance
0.025 to 0.070 mm (0.0010 to 0.0028 inch)

5 Cylinder Head
1.Lubricate the threads and the shoulder of bolts (18) with clean engine oil.
2.Tighten the bolts to a torque of 50 N·m in the numerical sequence that is shown in Illustration 4
3.Tighten the bolts to a torque of 160 N·min the numerical sequence that is shown in Illustration 4
4.turn the bolts through an additional 130 degrees in the numerical sequence

6 Rocker Shaft
1.Tighten torx screws (1) to a torque of 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

Engine Valve Lash - Inspect/Adjust


1.Inlet Valves 0.35 mm (0.014 inch)
2.Exhaust Valves 0.45 mm (0.018 inch)
Firing Order 1-5-3-6-2-4
Torque for the locknut ... 27 N·m (20 lb ft)

7 Valve Mechanism Cover


Tighten the bolts for the valve mechanism cover 22 N·m (16 lb ft)

Camshaft
2. Tighten the bolt to the following torque. ... 95 N·m (70 lb ft)

End play of a camshaft ... 0.126 to 0.558 mm


Maximum permissible end play of a worn camshaft ... 0.62 mm

9 Gear Group (Front)


1) Fuel injection pump drive gear
Tighten the nut to the following torque. ... 24 N·m

(2) Camshaft gear

Tighten the bolt for the camshaft gear to the following torque. ... 95 N·m

1.When 8.8 Graded bolts are installed


A.Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 63 N·m (46 lb ft).
b.Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 78 N·m (58 lb ft).

2.When 10.9 Graded bolts are installed follow Step 11.a through Step 11.b.
a.Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 115 N·m (85 lb ft).
b.Tighten bolts (2) to a torque of 190 N·m (140 lb ft).
9.Remove Tooling (A). Install remaining bolts (3) .
